Annotated Bibliography I am asking the research question Do students need to have a literacy sponsor or motivator growing up to be successful?

I want to use the following citations to help strengthen my argument when it comes to answering this question.
Alexie, Sherman. "The Joy of Reading and Writing: Superman and Me." The Most Wonderful Books: Writers on Discovering the Pleasures of Reading. Minneapolis: Milkweed Editions, 1997. 3-6. Print In The Joy of Reading and Writing: Superman and Me, Sherman Alexie shares his story of being a poor Indian kid growing up but remembering how his dad provided him books to read and how this really helped him develop into a strong reader and writer. He is now a published author of over twenty books and has written screenplays for three movies. I want to use his story of overcoming long shots in my article as an example to back up my point that everyone has motivations and sponsors that help them become successful. Braglin, Joe. Freshman at Ohio University from Logan Ohio. He felt happy when he was able to show his parents how he could read and write and they were his biggest motivators and sponsors. I am going to use this again as a primary source to back up my main point of my article. It is good to have many examples because it makes myself seem as more of a professional writer. Brandt, Deborah. Teachers College Record. Mar2003, Vol. 105 Issue 2, p245-260, 16p Deborah Brandt is a Professor of English at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is very knowledgable in the field of motivation but mostly sponsorship. I am going to be basing a lot of my paper off of studies that Brandt has done and use a lot of her information. It is going to provide my paper with a lot of credibility and make it sound a lot more professional. Brandt, Deborah. Sponsors of Literacy. College Composition and Communication 49.2 (1998): 165-185. Print. In Sponsors of Literacy, Deborah Brandt argues that people don't just become literate on their own, instead they are sponsored by people or institutions that help form the way people learn to read and write. She has many interviews that I am going to use as examples in my article about how sponsors shaped their life. I also am going to use her article to prove my point that everyone needs to have some type of sponsor to become a successful reader/writer.

Cecchini, Tyler, and Hugo Perez. Writing About Writing. Boston: n.p., 2011. Print. This article is a study to show what motivates people when it comes to literacy. They asked eight different people about what their motivations and sponsors were growing up. I am going to be using these as backup to prove my point that students need to have sponsors and motivations to get them to be able to read and write. Deeds, Cameron. Sophomore at Wilmington College in Ohio. Athletic Training Major Cameron Deeds is one of my many examples I am using to prove my argument that students need to have some sort of motivation to become a good reader and writer. I am going to use his story about how his parents heavily motivated him growing up. They also were on of his many literacy sponsors. Heath, Shirley Brice. Protean Shapes in Literacy Events: Ever Shifting Oral and Literate Traditions. Spoken and Written Language: Exploring Orality and Literacy. Ed. Deborah Tannen. Norwood: Ablex, 1982. 91-117. Print Shirley Brice is a sociologist who did a study on literacy practices in two different towns. She explains the different ways that kids can learn literacy. I think this will be a very good article to cite in my paper because it has a lot to do with what I am talking about with my research. Sitler, Helen Collins. Phi Kappa Phi Forum. Winter2008, Vol. 88 Issue 4, p24-25, 2p, 2 Color Photographs Helen Collins Sitler is using some of Dwayne Lowery's work to give a solid definition of what a literacy sponsor is. I am going to use this definition in my paper to better help people understand what it means. Strahan, Nick. Junior at Ohio University. History Major Nick is a good source to use in my paper because he was motivated by something different then any of my examples I am using in my paper. He also had many literacy sponsors growing up. He was a very competitive person and always wanted to be the best in his class. This motivation led him to being a very strong reader and writer and he still enjoys doing both even at this age. X, Malcolm. The Autobiography of Malcolm X. Ed. Alex Haley. New York: Ballantine, 1965. Print In The Autobiography of Malcolm X, Malcolm X shares with us his motivations and his sponsors when it comes to learning how to read and write. Some of the sponsors he had

were all of the books and the prison he was in. His motivation to read and write came from his fuel of being told he couldn't amount to anything by an eighth grade teacher. I am going to use this article as a main point in my paper and use his story of sponsors as a focal point in my paper.
