Topic Types of Government

OBJECTIVES 1 Define terms like government, Republic, Democracy, Tyranny, Oligarchy, Aristocracy etc. 2 Revise the purpose and functions of government. 3 Distinguish between the types of government. 4 Suppose they had the opportunity to select a system of government which one would they choose. 5 write relevant notes. 6. Consider the benefits of having a government.

CONTENT Government means an agency or body with the authority to control and direct the affairs of government. Some types of government are: Democracy, Autocracy, Republic, Dictatorship, Oligarchy, Tyranny, Aristocracy and Monarchy. Types of government systems in the Caribbean to be studied are: Constitutional Monarchy or the Westminister Model of government and Republic. Examples of countries that practice Westminister Model of government are: Jamaica,

ACTIVITIES 1 Students will write definition of terms. 2 The teacher will ask the students to say what they think the functions of government are. Other functions that are not mentioned by the students will be told to the class by the teacher. Students will make relevant notes 3 The teacher will explain the different types of government, then students will be asked to share with their peers the differences between each type of government. 4 The teacher will share with the class the characteristics of a Republic and Constitutional Monarchy. Short notes will be written on the board and the

CULMINATING ACT. 1 The teacher will pass a bag around the class which contains strips of papers with the types of governments on them. Music will be played while this is done. When the music stops the person holding the bag will have to dip in the bag. They will have to explain the term on the strip of paper.
