Q: A:

How do I get the most out of the M3 battery Life? The M3 has a 2200mAh battery. Depending on the usage of the PDA, the battery life can be impacted. One of the best features of the M3 is its size / form factor. This is a major draw card for the M3. The disadvantage is the battery is limited to 2200mAh. The M3 has been designed to be super efficient on battery usage. However there are some things you can do to prolong the battery life. A range of accessories are available to charge the device. Firstly the M3 comes standard with 2 batteries. While one battery is being used, the other can be charging. There are also car chargers (simple Cig. Lighter charger right thru to a Vehicle Cradle) and charging holsters that will charge the unit while the M3 is in the users holster on their hip. Other configuration options that will prolong battery life are as follows 1. Minimize the usage of the Backlight on the screen or set it to a lower level. 2. Have the application turn off the scanner when the scanner is not required (using Keyboard wedge this is not possible however if the Scanner API is integrated into the PDA Application then this is a great way to save battery life). 3. Have the PDA shut the screen down after a shorter period of time. Wake up can be via a press of any key on the keyboard. 4. Minimize usage of GPS if GPS is installed in the device.

Detailed below are some tests that have been carried out on the M3. Note the HSDPA module is not included in these tests.

Q: A:

What's the difference between WM05 and CE5.0? The basic difference between WM05 and CE5.0 is that Microsoft have stated that WM05 must have a certain amount of memory, processor type and speed and INCLUDE all the WM05 DLLs and components. This is IMPORTANT as it means applications will move between WM05 devices with NO CHANGE. In other words if you write your application for a WM05 device then it will work on ALL WM05 devices. However in the commercial mobility space, Manufacturers like Symbol, Intermec, Datalogic etc all provide ADD ONS to WM05 to support the scanner (and other specific things). So if an application is written for Symbol WM05 device (say MC70) and you want to move it to a Datalogic Skorpio for example, then the application will require a modification as the Datalogic Skorpio does not support the Symbol Scanner API. Windows Mobile 5.0 is built on top of CE5.0. Microsoft document what modules of the CE5.0 operating system MUST be included in the WM05 build by the OEM. CE5.0 on the other hand is open to an OEM to include and exclude any OS components they like to provide the functionality they need to support the device they are creating. CE5.0 for instance can be included in a Washing Machine. WM05 CANNOT as Microsoft state the device must be of a certain spec and have a VGA etc etc. So what does this mean for application portability Basically applications are LESS portable on a CE platform as it is not possible to know in advance what modules of the OS have been included or excluded from the device. Having said that - most manufacturers include most of the basic modules needed for a PDA device in their CE build. i.e. Networking, Screen, Keyboard modules etc so it is less of an issue. The application however will need to be BUILT using the CE SDK. In other words re linked with CE DLLs etc

How is Memory Allocation in M3 Green and M3 Sky divided by between ROM and RAM

A:

M3 Green 128MB RAM / 256MB ROM

The 128MB RAM is divided up between REAL MEMORY for running applications and NON persistent Storage Space. This can be adjusted using the M3 Green Memory Slider Bar found in the control panel. The 256MB ROM is Persistent storage. Approx 64 MB is used to HOLD and LOAD the Operating System from . The remaining 192 MB is available under the /Flash disk Folder as PERSISTENT Storage.

M3 Sky 128MB RAM / 256 MB ROM The 128MB RAM is REAL program memory used for running applications. The 256MB ROM is divided between storage space, persistent storage and OS Files. The breakup is as follows PRIOR to B1TSH716EN OS files WM5.0 40MB / WM6.1 64MB Storage WM5.0 - 80MB WM6.1 64MB /Flash Disk 128MB PRIOR to B1TSH716EN OS files WM5.0 40MB / WM6.1 64MB Storage WM5.0 - 150MB WM6.1 130MB /Flash Disk 128MB All STORAGE and FLASH DISK is PERSISTENT. Q: A:

When I press the power Button, the screen will not come on. The Power Button is driven via Software. If the device is turned off and straight away the device is turned on again, then the software mechanism will prevent the screen from coming on again straight away this is by design to protect the screen from powering off and back on too quick. When you then start pressing the button even quicker and getting angry, the software is magic and it detects this and will try even harder to frustrate you by keeping the screen from coming on even longer. The solution is to wait 3 seconds and then press and hold the power button for a couple of seconds until you see the screen come on. This timeout value has been adjusted in later versions of OS and is better to use.

Q: A:

How do I auto Install my application when the M3 or M3 Sky is COLD BOOTED. The M3 and M3 Sky have two files located in the /Flash Disk/Startup folder that assist with this process. These files are called M3.INI and STARTUP.INF. The capabilities of CE5.0 and WM5.0/6.1 are different so the M3.INI and Startup.inf have different capabilities. These are fairly obvious by looking at the contents of the files. On the WM5.0 / 6.1 devices, there is an application called STARTUP located in Start->Settings->System. This application has a GUI to enable you to set the contents of these files as opposed to editing them manually

See Visual INI Manual.pdf available at ftp.warp.com.au/M3 for download... Which will explain how to use the utility M3.INI allows the following actions Password, Startup Setup, Sidekey setup, Install Setup and Region and IE setup. Startup.inf allows the following actions Create Folder, CopyFile, MoveFile, DeleteFile, RunEXE, shortcut, RegSetValue and DLLRegister Some things that can be done with M3.INI are as follows If you want the scan wedge application to autostart after a reboot then set AutoON value to 1 Commercial In confidence

Many application developers would like their application installed automatically when the PDA is hard reset / Cold Booted. This is possible using the CAB file installation in M3.INI or using the Copy and Move and RunEXE commands found in the Statup.Inf file. Using M3.INI and the CAB File installation process, the following lines in the M3.INI file will result in the myApplication.cab file being installed from the SD Card in the M3 Sky. [CAB_INSTALL]

Alternatively, if you do not have a CAB file that you wish to install and you simply want to register a DLL and copy a file then the following lines in the Startup.inf file will suffice /// /H -> Execute after Hardware Reset /S -> Execute on every reset (Hardware and Software) // putting ';' or '/' will disable the command. // each command will be executed in regular order. // it means that user needs to use and organize the commannds below appropriately according to the requirments. // For example, // If user wants to copy, move and copy again a certain file, and giving 2 seconds of sleep time between each command, // the order of commands should be something like this. // Copyfile = ******* // sleep = 2000 // Movefile = ******* // sleep = 2000 // Copyfile = ******* //These are the commands that you can use. //CreateFolder= [execute type] [path to the folder to create] CreateFolder=/h "\Program files\myApplicationFolder //CopyFile = [execute type] [path to original file] [path to copy] copyFile=/h "\Storage Card\myApplication\myApplication.exel" "\Windows\KScanBar.dll" //DeleteFile = [execute type] [path to the file to delete] DeleteFile=/s "\Program Files\myApplicationfolder\temp.txt

Installing a CAB file is possible as follows. The following command will auto install the .NET Compact framework. The .NET compact framework should be located in \Flash Disk. [CF_INSTALL] Install=1 InstallFile = \Flash Disk\Driver\NETCFv35.wm.armv4i.cab Alternatively you may wish to load certain CAB Files from the SD Card. In this case the following command will be required. [CF_INSTALL] Install=1 InstallFile = \Storage Card\NETCFv35.wm.armv4i.cab
