Word limit Do your best to keep your piece to between 500-1000 words. If youre writing a short story we are more flexible on this. Generally, the more your piece is over the word limit, the less likely it is to get into the hard copy edition! If you would like to write a shorter piece, feel free! Getting Published 1) Please send us a pitch of your idea, that way we can tell you whether its something wed be interested in or not. 2) The pitch is not compulsory but its more likely your piece will get in the mag if it has gone through this process. 3) There is no guarantee that your piece will be published in the hard copy or online edition. We will let you know however about 2 weeks before the launch if your piece got in and will ask you before we put it online. 4) Please proofread your work for typographical errors. Editors would rather spend their time polishing work. Editors will collaborate with writers as much as possible on larger changes but will edit for content and thematic relevance. 5) Please submit your work with a title and by line (your name). 6) Please send all work through in .doc format. Style Dont let the idea of a quasi academic zine put you off. All we want to emphasise is that the pieces in in Brief be interesting and thought provoking. You dont need to do research (unless your piece needs it) nor do pieces need to be written in an academic style. Write in whichever way suits the ideas you want to convey in your piece. Conversational tones in pieces are welcome, just so long as the pieces are engaging and explore the theme. Editors can provide guidance on style if you are having trouble. Accessibility If you are writing an article about something technical, please keep accessibility in mind. We would like our readers to be challenged but we would also like them to be able to engage in a topic even if they have not studied it. We also dont want readers to have to have a dictionary beside them when they read the mag. We dont mind them having to look up one or two words, but if possible, choose language that communicates your point as clearly and concisely as possible. If you discuss specific terms, concepts or processes please give short definitions where possible. Editors will also help you out with this, especially if you are struggling with the word limit. Any other questions please email inbriefmag@gmail.com. Dont be afraid to write! Pass this on to friends who you think might also be interested. Lots of love, The in Brief Committee J
