Congratulations and good luck go out

to several local sports teams and athletes.

First, Luke Cramer, Alex Bergman and
Jared Chambers are on their way to the
state wrestling tournament this weekend.
Also, MacKenzie Stewart fnished her
stellar swimming career at Port Clinton
High School taking third place in the
100 breaststroke and ffth in the 200 IM
at the state swimming meet in Canton
last weekend. Also, Cheyenne Meek, who
really came on strong at the end of the
season, took third in the 50 freestyle at
state, and just missed out on a podium
spot in the 100 freestyle. Shell be back
for more next year.

I am particularly sad to see the closing
of Richmond Gallery in Marblehead.
Ben and Wendy accomplished so much
in their 30 years here. Bens paintings be-
came a sensation in the 1980s and his art
has become timeless. Their little gallery
became such a magnet, that many small
retail entrepreneurs followed them to the
Village of Marblehead, which became
a very successful artistic and retail con-
clave. We wish Ben and Wendy nothing
but the best in retirement.

The islands frst-ever radio station went
on the air this morning, broadcasting Put-
in-Bay news and a two-hour talk show
with local islanders as guests.
WPIB, PutinBayRadio.com, signed-on at
6 a.m. from its new island studio in the PIB
Chamber of Commerce offces.
The radio station is the only broadcast
facility in Ohio to be headquartered on an
island.
WPIB stands for Were Put-in-Bay and
is a sister station to WPCR, Port Clinton
and Ottawa Countys only other radio
broadcasting facility. The radio stations are
owned by Ottawa Broadcasting LLC.
We felt that Put-in-Bay needed its own
radio station due to the tremendous draw
and appeal it has to tourists and visitors to
Ottawa County, said Greg Peiffer, Presi-
dent of Ottawa Broadcasting. There is
just so much summertime activity here on
the Island that another media avenue to
distribute information was a natural idea.
And telling non-islanders about life here in
the winter is pretty interesting too!
WPIB joins other Internet stations as
part of the new way to listen to the radio.
It broadcasts its main signal over the Inter-
net which can then be heard by listeners
using their desktop or laptop computers,
tablets, smart phones and Wi-Fi radios and
now in some select 2012 automobiles.
The stations programming will run 24
hours a day, seven days a week and will
feature Put-in-Bay local and area news two
times per hour from 6 to 9 a.m. Monday
through Friday. At 10 oclock on those
days, Joan Brydens Talk@Ten show will
feature guests from Ottawa County and,
each and every Wednesday, will exclusively
feature island residents, business owners
and guests.
We want to tell the entire world about
life on the island, what is here and what
South Bass Island is about, said Bryden,
who also serves as the program director for
both radio stations.
Those tuning into WPIB will also hear the
familiar voice of Tom Brady, the mainstay
of island announcements and advertise-
ments for more than two decades. Brady
voiced all the WPIB station liners and pro-
mos including those announcing upcom-
ing songs from talented island performers
like Bob Gatewood, Mike Mad Dog Ad-
With the primary less than a
week away, candidates are criss-
crossing the state for last-minute
appearances and vying the sup-
port of Ohio voters.
Locally, offcials are working to
get out the vote in support of the
schools.
ISSUE 1
Benton-Carroll-Salem Local
School District Seeking the
renewal of a 4.33-mill levy to
maintain current services. Pas-
sage would extend the current tax
fve years.
ISSUE 2
Genoa Area Local School Dis-
trict Seeking the replacement
of a 1.35-mill levy along with an
increase of .25 mill for perma-
nent improvements.
ISSUE 3
Woodmore Local School Dis-
trict Seeking a 5.43-mill bond
issue for a new elementary/
middle school building. The levy
would raise $15,709,840 to par-
ticipate in the State of Ohio Ex-
ceptional Needs School Facilities
Assistance Program. The issue all
includes a 0.5-mill levy for per-
manent improvements.
CANDIDATES
Republicans will choose the
challengers for a few key races.
For president, front-runners
Rick Santorum and Mitt Romney
will battle it out with Newt Gin-
grich, Jon Huntsman, Ron Paul
and Rick Perry to face Barack
Obama.
For the new 9th Congressional
District, Samuel Wurzelbacher
aka Joe the Plumber faces
Steven Kraus. The winner of that
primary will face one of three
Democratic candidates: Marcy
Kaptur, Dennis Kucinich or Gra-
ham Veysey. The redrawn District
combined the territories of Kap-
tur and Kucinich who have repre-
sented the Toledo and Cleveland
areas for years. Veysey is an entre-
preneur and political newcomer.

Responsible
development
C.O.R.D. is responding to a recent
letter in the Beacon, Feb. 2, concern-
ing development in Port Clinton. Yes,
Port Clinton needs economic devel-
opment. Given our countys present
economic situation, what community
doesnt?
Important as development is, a
planned, varied, cautious approach
is needed. If not, costly mistakes will
be made. As an example we point to
the Puller Project. For those that need
a reminder read the Beacons article
Puller Pulls Out (April 17, 2008)
and the News Herald article of April
21, 2008 Puller: City Keeps Chang-
ing Everything. Thousands and
thousands of dollars were misspent.
The city must have different types
of development from retail to recre-
ational, from educational to industri-
al. A varied approach allows econom-
ic balance within the community to
exist.
The city must also consider the lo-
cation of the development project,
the restrictions of that location, and
the cost to meet those restrictions. If
not, time, money, and opportunity
will be wasted.
When the appropriate project does
present itself, will the city have the
fnances to take advantage of that op-
portunity if this misspending is con-
tinued?

Traffc plea
I wish to write an open letter to
ODOT, Danbury and Catawba town-
ships, Ottawa County Department
of Engineering and safety directors
about a near-death experience at the
McDonalds at Ohio 163 and 53.
While Im grateful for the im-
provements, they seem to have again
avoided the entrance and exit of Mc-
Donalds. It is my wish that the same
design is used there that was used for
the entrance to the Huntington Bank:
only a south-bound entrance and a
south-bound exit.
I was south-bound and in the right
turn lane just as I have done for the
last 30-plus. This day was different
my speed approx. 20 mph. Traffc
was heavy on all directions, I had the
arrow for the right turn but the two
lanes, straight and the left turn onto
163 west was held by a red light.
Two very courteous drivers just
happen to be side by side and pro-
vided a space before them for a ve-
hicle to pass into McDonalds. The
vehicles were not lined up real perfect
and blocking my view of that small
opening, when a vehicle did happen
to pass through in front. That driver
might not have known there was an-
other lane, the one I was in and when
I saw him and hit the brake, I was all
braced and really thought for a mo-
ment I hit him broadside. I still do
not know how I avoided any contact.
That really opened to eyes and I had
to park in the frst drive I passed to
gather myself. I pray everyone that
reads this please join me: that drive
has to be closed to cross traffc.
There is another entrance that is
safe off of 163 and also a much safer
exit onto 163 for north-bound. No-
body is put out.
I beg every Catawba Island resident
to support my purpose, including the
owner of McDonalds.

One thing youll hear exclusively on WPIB are those
island entertainers that are regular draws to Put-in-Bay,
Peiffer said. In fact, Bob Gatewood will even have his own
one-hour show featuring interviews and music from all
the bands and performers that appear here on the Island.
Another specialty program will be more serious, with lo-
cal island resident Patrick Meyers as host.
Patrick will talk about the inner workings of govern-
ment, schools and the other islands and have full-time
residents as guests, Peiffer said.
One face that will become familiar is that of Dorothy
Henry who is WPCR and WPIBs Sales Manager. Dorothy
has already contacted several businesses getting them on-
board with radio commercials, web banners and program
sponsorships.
The new radio station is all about community and posi-
tive news and certainly its operation on the mainland is
testament to that. WPCR received the Lighthouse Award
for Outstanding Community Service just last year from
the Port Clinton Chamber. Peiffer said he wants WPIB to
get involved with every community organization on the
Island and encourages them to send news releases and
items about their events to news@wpib.com.
When you need some good, positive publicity about
anything and everything happening here in the islands,
please make sure you let us know. WPIB is here to serve
the community, Peiffer said.

March 10th - St. Pattys Day
Wine Tasting 4 - 6 p.m. March is National Colorectal Awareness Month and ev-
ery Monday through Friday this month, Magruder Hos-
pital will have free take-home colorectal health screening
kits available from 9 a.m. to
3 p.m. in the main lobby of
the hospital. This is being
offered to increase aware-
ness and early detection of
disease. According to Dr.
Panju Prithviraj, Medi-
cal Director of Magruders
Oncology Clinic, colorectal
cancer is a preventable type
of cancer.
Unlike some other can-
cers, colorectal cancer, by
following certain guide-
lines, is quite preventable
and is a cancer that can
be detected early through
screening. This leads to di-
agnosis of early stages of colorectal cancers and thereby
decreases chances of recurrence with high chances of a
cure. Prevention and early detection can go a long way to-
ward changing these numbers. When detected early and
treated promptly, cancer of the colon and rectum is one
of the most treatable and curable forms of the disease,
said Prithviraj.
Beginning at age 50, men and women who are at average
risk for developing colorectal cancer should begin screen-
ing. Screening can result in the detection and removal of
colorectal polyps before they become cancerous, as well as
the detection of cancer that is at an early stage.
The take home kits are a basic screen for blood in the
stool, which could be a sign of several colorectal health
issues. A colonoscopy, which is an outpatient screening
procedure, is more widely accepted as the screening that
is most effective for early detection of colorectal polyps
and cancer.
For information on the colorectal health screening kits,
call Rachel Fall, Magruder Manager of Community Out-
reach & Development, at 419-732-4061.

The Ottawa County
Health Department
welcomes Diane Ko-
kinda to its staff as the
new Director of Nurs-
ing.
Kokinda, a Port
Clinton resident, be-
gan working with the
department on Jan. 6.
She oversees a num-
ber of the programs including those with
emphasis on family planning, home care
and community outreach focused on ser-
vices for teens.
Shes jumping in with both feet, said
Ottawa County Health Commissioner
Nancy Osborn. She fts into the mix and
she has a good sense of humor along with
the professionalism.
A Danbury High School graduate, Ko-
kinda earned her registered nursing de-
gree at the University of Toledo, Medical
College of Ohio in Toledo. She graduated
Summa Cum Laude.
Kokinda has worked for several other
area agencies including Home Instead Se-
nior Care, Toledo Hospital and Magruder
Hospital. However, she has spent the ma-
jority of her nursing career at Firelands
Community Hospital in Sandusky, where
she was employed as a post anesthesia care
unit RN from 1992 to present.
My frst love has always been patient
care at the bedside, said Kokinda.
But family dynamics are changing, Ko-
kinda explained. She is married to Rich
Kokinda. The couple has two sons, Zach
and Jake, a freshman and seventh-grader
respectively.
And as her children grow, she saw a need
to chart a new course in her career to bet-
ter ft into the new lifestyle, Kokinda said.
The new job brings her closer to home
with a more predictable schedule.
Kokinda can be reached at the Ottawa
County Health Department, 1856 E. Perry
St., weekdays from 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

TACKLE THE TOWER
Port Clinton resident, Joe Camerato recently competed in Tackle the Tower, a
38-story stair climb at the Galleria and Tower at Erieview in Cleveland to beneft
Ronald McDonald House. Camerato, who is a Toledo Firefghter, climbed the stairs
wearing full turnout gear. His daughter, Port Clinton High School Freshman, Gabri-
elle (Gabby), also completed the climb and beat her father with a time of 7:34.4.
The father-daughter pair is currently training to compete in Fight for Air, a 42-story
climb that benefts the American Lung Association and will be held at Tower City
in Cleveland on March 3. Their fellow teammates include Port Clinton Firefghters
Matt Horn and Jay Edwards, Maple Height Firefghter Joe Kucera and his brother

A Taize Prayer Service is planned at 7
p.m. Sunday, March 11, at Peach Lutheran
Church.
Taize is a prayer service of quiet medita-
tion, refection, scripture and prayers, spo-
ken and sung. The Taize pronounced
teh-ZAY tradition began in 1940 in an
ecumenical monastic community in the
French village of Taize. The music is a dis-
tinctive part of the service, written to allow
for participation by a multi-lingual con-
gregation without hymnals. The hymns
are brief, simple and repeated many times
in order that the words may descend from
our lips to our hearts.
The service is paced slowly and designed
to quiet our minds and souls to make
within us a place where the Holy Spirit
may dwell, and Gods voice heard. This is
diffcult in our multi-media society that is
accustomed to the television, cable, com-
puters, instant messaging, Facebook, Twit-
ter, Pinterest, texting, cell phones/smart
phones/iPhones, iPods and iPads. The
Taize service offers an opportunity slow
down, quiet our minds and hearts, relax,
settle our nerves, and allow Gods strength
to fow quietly into us.
This Lenten prayer service will be lead by
Rev. Robert Butcher, retired pastor emeri-
tus of Firelands Presbytherian Church,
and Gregory Fox, retired choral director.
Peace Lutheran Church, Rev. Mike Wiech-
ers, pastor, has offered their worship space
for this ecumenical service.

Do you enjoy wildlife and helping people? Then you
might consider volunteering at the Bird Center at Ma-
gee Marsh Wildlife Area near Oak Harbor. From March
through November, volunteers help staff the Bird Cen-
ter, work in the bookstore, help with programs, assist at
special events and perform
other tasks where needed
or that highlights their own
skills and interests.
Magee Marsh receives
more than 150,000 visitors a
year and our volunteers get
to interact with folks from
all over the world.
No need to worry if you
know little about wildlife.
You will learn as you go and
a training session is provid-
ed. The main qualifcation
to become a volunteer is a
willingness to help people
and a positive attitude. As
long-time volunteer Marcia
puts it, I see volunteering
as an opportunity to learn,
observe and serve and it
gives me satisfaction in par-
ticipating in the preserva-
tion and protection of the
marsh.
If this sounds like some-
thing you might like to do,
call Mary at 419-898-0960,
No. 31, to fnd out more and
to schedule a time to come
in and go over the Volunteer
Manual.
A training session for all
volunteers, both new and
returning volunteers, will
be at 1 p.m. Saturday, March
10. This will include a pizza
lunch and a walk through
the day-to-day operations
at the Bird Center and up-
dates for the new year.

A committee has been formed to
gather memories of the Graytown
Elementary School that will be clos-
ing at the end of the 2012 school year.
The committee is hoping to hold an
open house sometime in May to al-
low anyone interested to take one last
tour through the school.
The group needs help with ideas/
events the public would like to see at
the open house.
If anyone has any photos, class pic-
tures, event programs, ideas or other
school items that they would like to
share with the committee, bring them
to Graytown School to be copied or
email to the school in care of jwank@
bcssd.com. Call the school at 419-
862-2082 for information.
The next planning committee meet-
ing is planned for 6 p.m. March 5 in
Graytown School. Everyone is wel-
come to attend.

Richard Bast, a former board
member of the Benton-Carroll-
Salem Local School Board, will
be presented with the Ohio
School Boards Associations Mas-
ter Board Member Award at the
associations regional spring con-
ference in Milan on Thursday,
March 15.
The Master Board Member
Award is given to school board
members who dedicate them-
selves to improving their board-
manship skills and knowledge.
All Master Board Members
must frst earn OSBAs Award of
Achievement before being con-
sidered for the additional recog-
nition. The Master Board Mem-
ber honor is only awarded once
to an individual, and is recog-
nized for life.
Before being considered for the
honor, an Ohio public board of
education member must com-
plete numerous professional de-
velopment workshops and activi-
ties. Leadership on school boards
or educational service center
governing boards, active involve-
ment in student leadership and
other statewide OSBA activities
are but a few of the requirements
considered in bestowing the Mas-
ter Board Member designation.

Sauder Village came to Connie
Snyders classroom at Immaculate
Conception School recently to pres-
ent a program about matter. The
fourth- and ffth-graders learned that
all matter is made up of particles and
has weight and mass. Matter takes
up space and has volume. Students
were each given a container with a
measured amount of cream or milk,
some were warm and some were cold.
They were given directions about
what to do, how to fll out an obser-
vation chart and what happens to
the ingredient in the container if you
shake it for 10 minutes. The end re-
sult was butter and a liquid. The stu-
dents tasted their butter on a cracker,
and could also drink the milk that re-
mained. This program was presented
by Shellee Murcko of Sauder Village.
The program was made possible
through the PiR2 class that Snyder is
entered into.

SMCC 46 DHS 36
St. Mary Central Catholic used
an 18-11 advantage in the fourth
quarter to pull away from Dan-
bury on its way to a 46-36 win in
the Division IV Sectional Semif-
nals.
The Panthers had a small lead
for the frst three quarters, lead-
ing 21-17 at halftime and 28-25
after three quarters before using a
surge in the fourth quarter to take
control.
SMCC, who improved to 13-8
on the season with the win, were
led by forward Lindsay Kaatz,
who had a game-high 18 points.
Maddie Engeler helped to pace
the Panthers with 10 points.
The Lakers, who fnish the sea-
son with a 7-14 mark, got 18
points from Kelsey Clemons and
10 from Erin Lavelle.
On a positive note, it was a
much better performance this
time around for the Lakers, who
were defeated by the Panthers, 49-
20, on Jan. 17, but not enough.
BOYS
OTTAWA HILLS 65 DHS 44
After taking a 15-13 lead follow-
ing the frst quarter, Ottawa Hills
sustained control of the contest
by outscoring Danbury, 35-21, in
the middle two quarters to take
a 50-34 lead heading into the
fourth quarter on its way to a 65-
44 victory.
The Green Bears had three play-
ers fnish with double fgures,
led by Lucas Janowicz, who had
a game-high 22 points. Team-
mates Geoff Beans and A.J. King
fnished with 19 and 16 points,
respectively.
Dalton Chapman led the Lakers
with 19 points and Caleb Helline,
the teams leading scorer, fnished
with 14 points.
Ottawa Hills fnishes the regular
season with a 12-8 overall record
and a 9-5 mark in the Toledo Area
Athletic Conference (TAAC),
good for fourth place. The Lakers
are now 0-20 overall and 0-14 in
the TAAC.
BELLEVUE 49 OHHS 34
The Bellevue Lady Red used a
17-8 surge in the second quarter
to pull away and sustain control
in their 49-34 victory over Oak
Harbor in the Division II Section-
al Finals.
With an 11-9 lead following the
frst quarter, Bellevue, which im-
proved to 17-4 with the win, out-
scored the Rockets 26-12 in the
middle two quarters to build their
lead.
Bellevues Leslie Raifsnider led
all scorers with 22 points and and
point guard Carly Santoro had 17
points.
The Rockets, who fnish the sea-
son with a 7-14 record, were led
by senior Allison Dunn, who had
11 points, and got nine points
from forward Abbie Gezo.
BOYS
PERKINS 62 OHHS 38
The Perkins Pirates steadily built
their lead in the frst two quarters
before cruising to a 62-38 victory
over Oak Harbor.
Perkins, which improved to 18-2
overall and 14-0 in the Sandusky
Bay Conference (SBC), led 17-9
after the frst quarter and 18-6 fol-
lowing the second quarter, help-
ing them to 35-15 lead at the half.
Pirates forward Nick Williams
led all scorers with 21 points and
center Michael Ebert helped pace
Perkins with 10 points.
Oak Harbor forward Trent Lac-
er had a team-high 11 points and
A.J. Cecil and Greg Haar fnished
with six points apiece.

Friday night at Clyde, losing their
last 6 games of the season. Clyde se-
cured second place in the Sandusky

Perkins went 12-0 in the SBC to win

all day with the Perkins defense,
fnally falling on Saturday by a 51-
29 count in their Sectional Finals
matchup with the Lady Pirates in
Sandusky.
PC managed to score only 10 feld
goals on only 31 shots, and commit-
ted 21 turnovers. The Redskins, who
did not have any players in double
fgures, were led by Hope Thorbahn
with 9.
Coach Toby Bickel and his team
learned on Monday that two of their
players were named second team All
Sandusky Bay Conference: Tiffany
Colston and Hope Thorbahn. The
Redskins ended their season with a
13-8 overall record, their best fnish

Port Clintons varsity boys bowlers fnished
third at the OHSAA NW District Tournament at
Interstate Lanes in Rossford Friday to advance to
the Ohio state fnals at Wayne Webs Bowl in Co-
lumbus at 11 a.m. Friday.
The Redskins started with a 923 game were tied
for fourth, then followed with a 963 to advance
to second. They fell with an 835 third game, and
started Baker with games of 159-138 before turn-
ing things around with games of 201-193-165-
243 to fnish nine pins ahead of fourth-place St.
Henry.
Wapakoneta won the boys event with a score
of 4,000. Coldwater was second with 3,873, fol-
lowed by PC with 3,820 and St. Henry with 3,811.
We started with two great games before bowl-
ing a poor third game. We just quit making the
shots we did the frst 2 games, said Coach Bob
Black. Then we struggled the frst two Baker
games before rallying. The last game we went
open, four-bagger, spare and three strikes going
into the 10th and Sean Black rolled the frst strike
to lock up our frst trip to the state fnals as a var-
sity sport.
Im so proud of this team who really came to-
gether and cheered for each other. Outstanding
Team Chemistry which certainly helped them
succeed.
The Skins, 15-6 on the season and second in
the Northern Ohio Bowling Conference, were led
by David Wilburn 213-237-158 for a 608 series.
Darryl Trent rolled 206-237-159 for 602, Sean
Black 193-143-220 for 556, Jonny Newton 167-
163-138 for 468, Nathan Van Hoose 183-160, and

For fve years or so, Port Clinton swimming, particu-
larly on the ladies side of the ledger, has been about
MacKenzie Stewart. This year, the former State Cham-
pion had company on the podium in the person of
Cheyenne Meek. Stewart fnished her swimming ca-
reer at Port Clinton in fne style, claiming 3rd in the
breastroke event and 5th in the 200 Individual Medley.
Cheyenne Meek, who has been shattering school re-
cords for several weeks now, fnished a strong 3rd in
the 50 yard freestyle. She was just edged out of the f-
nals in the 100 freestyle; however she broke her own
school record in the event by over a half-second!
Three Oak Harbor Rocket wrestlers made it out of
the District meat-grinder to advance to this week-
ends State Wrestling Tournament in Columbus. The
District tournament is normally a tough one, but was
made much tougher by the addition of State and Na-
tional power St. Paris Graham to the Marion District
Tournament. Qualifying for State this year from Oak
Harbor are Luke Cramer (138), Alex Bergman (152)
and Jared Chambers (160).

Coaching girls: Its different than
coaching boys. Ive waited a long
time to write about this because male
coaches (and some female) tend to
be skeptical about my observations.
I will plunge ahead anyway, because
during 21 years of coaching girls at
the high school level, I experienced
the same unique issues, year after
year. Please understand that not
every girl reacts the same way to all
situations, but the patterns are pretty
common. My goal in letting myself
in for all the protests I will receive, is
to get parents and coaches to realize
girls and boys are different (duh)
and need to be coached with the dif-
ferences in mind.
My frst piece of advice when
addressing coaches of girls teams
is that they should Stock up on ant-
acids. Thats when I begin to get the
puzzled looks from the new coaches
in my audience. The experienced
coaches, however, begin to chuckle
and nod. They know what Im talk-
ing about. One fellow, who had a lot
of coaching experience with both
boys and girls teams, complained
that, someone is always crying.
Yep. Girls may cry when theyre
happy, when theyre sad, when they
lose or when they win. Neither yell-
ing at them nor being nice to them
will do much to stem the tide of
tears. Handling the emotional swings
of young female athletes is a very
real part of a coachs job; and its
not an easy one. Most of us know a
lot about the sport itself but not so
much about how to channel emo-
tions into helping a player succeed.
Ill give just a few examples in how
girls react differently to competition
and coaching than boys do. Girls will
overreact to criticism and may be-
lieve everything you tell them to do
differently is criticism. Theyre very
afraid of making mistakes. Hearing
cheers from fans may make them
nervous rather than determined.
Coaches must spend a lot of time
teaching girls that mistakes are OK
and how to handle adversity.
Competition is hard for many girls.
Girls want to be liked and popular.
Aggressively trying to beat someone
goes against the rules for becoming
popular, and that especially makes
competing against a teammate very
uncomfortable. Be careful about
arranging challenge matches of any
kind. The fallout of hard feelings can
show up and affect teamwork for the
rest of the season. Coaches must pay
attention to helping girls understand
they can still be liked and respected
while competing well.
Girls need to be taught what it
means to be a team player. Gossip
and cliques are big problems. Girls
will often ostracize the stars. Team
dynamics can be wrecked if dissen-
sion breaks out between players.
Generally, it is not as important to
girls to win as it is to be liked and
popular. You have a big problem if
one of your players gets dumped
by her boyfriend at lunch. She will
bring all those emotions to practice
or the game. Heaven help you if that
boy starts dating someone else on
your team!
The main priority of most female
athletes is to not be embarrassed!
That priority helps them be receptive
to trying to improve. They will listen
to advice (as long as it doesnt sound
like criticism) and try really hard
in practice. Unfortunately, embar-
rassment is also gets in the way of
winning, as they may be more afraid
of looking bad than losing. Fear
can mess with their effort during
competition. A bad hair day, an ugly
uniform or a big error can all divert
her attention from competing well.
Be sensitive to this.
Yes, there emotional issues to deal
with in coaching girls. Hang in there.
It can be the most rewarding job
youve ever had. You just have to use
what you know about differences to
help your players. My biggest thrill
in coaching was to watch emotional,
nervous, tentative freshmen girls
grow into strong, confdent, resilient
young women as graduates. Girls
who play for the love of the sport are
so much fun. They need understand-
ing and caring coaches. Be one.
