The participants of the Study Tour on Mining in the Philippines from = February 25 to March 16, 2012

Stephanie Gantert

I am 44 years old and single.=20 My place of birth is a small town close to the Black Forest, where my = mother still lives. My elder brother lives in Frankfurt, the financial = hub of Germany. Today I'm working as a librarian at the University library of Freiburg, = a very popular town in the South of Black Forest with a lot of students = and even more tourists from all over the world. Beside my job at the University I'm a volunteer member of terre des = hommes, an international child rights organization (find more = information on the homepage of our office for South-East-Asia: = http://www.tdhgsea.org/index.php). I'm a member of the local Working = Group Freiburg and the national Working Group Southeast Asia (both = volunteer groups). In 2011 terre des hommes stated a campaign concerning ecological child = rights. The campaign is dealing with topics like food security, water = supply ... and mining. My first visit to the Philippines was in 1992, which was also the first = time I left Europe and the first time I entered an airplane (a special = journey in many ways). In 2009 terre des hommes organized a journey to = meet some of our partners in the Philippines (mainly Mindanao, Negros = and Manila) and I joined it. It was a very impressive trip for all of us = and strengthened bonds of solidarity and friendship. I'm looking forward to meet you and learn about causes and impacts of = mining in the Philippines and discussing possibilities of support and = action.=20

My name is Hedwig Maurer. I am living in K=F6ln/Cologne ; I am 67 years = old, I am married and have two sons, 35 and 32 years old. Both of them = are lucky to have a good job. They are not married and so far they have = no children - so I am not yet a grandmother.

After high school I studied Spanish and English to become a translator. = After spending y year working in Spain I started to work for the radio = station Voice of Germany/Deutsche Welle as translator and later on as = editor for Latin American political affairs. At the beginning of the new = century y had to leave Deutsche Welle after 30 years because our = department was closed down. At that time I got the chance to work as a = freelance journalist for the press department oft the Franciscan = institution Missionszentrale der Franziskaner/Mission Central of = Franciscans in Bonn. It was then, that my personal and professional = interest began to focus mainly on issues of peace, justice and integrity = of creation. Apart from the situation in Latin America, which has always = been one main point of interest for me, Philippines have become a = country that also caught my interest when I was there (mainly in = Mindanao) with a group led by Dieter Zabel in 2003.=20

I am looking forward to getting new and up to date impressions on the = situation in the Philippines, to have a closer look at certain points =

regarding the economic activities and their effects on the people.=20

Michael Reckordt wrote his diploma thesis in Geography about "Public = Space vs. Shopping Malls and Social Exclusion of Urban Poor in Metro = Manila". In 2008 he worked for the NGO WEED (World Economy, Ecology & = Development) and did research on the negative impacts of European = Union's free trade agreements. Since December 2008 he is working for the = socio-political information and documentation center philippinenbuero in = Germany (since May 2009 as executive director). One of his main focus is = on Philippine mining industries and German investors. He was in the = Philippines several times and visited the mining sites in Mankayan = (CAR), Tampakan (South Cotabato) and Toledo (Cebu). The philippinenbuero = is co-founder of a German NGO-network on resources and also co-founder = of the "Action Network Human Rights - Philippines".

Personal Details

Home W=FCrzburg, Bavaria, Germany =20

Year of Birth 1956 =20 Place of Birth Aschaffenburg, Bavaria, Germany =20 Married Since 1977 with Eberhard Sauer =20 Children Debora (29 years.) and Ina (25 years old.) =20

I am living in a small village near W=FCrzburg, where I work as a nurse = in a nearby hospital. I love to work with people and therefore I also = love my job. Nevertheless I had a break of 12 years during my worktime = to bring up my two daughters. During that period of time I did voluntary = work in the school and the parish in my village.

For the last 14 years I have worked in the hospital again.

My interest for the Philippinesibegan in 2005, when I visited the =

country for the first time. I have got to know Lory Obal and Father = Geremia in Kidapawan / Mindanao. A second journey to the Philippines = followed in 2008 and now I am planning a third one in February 2012. I = had the chance to collect first experiences about the interreligious = dialogue and the Tribal Filipino Program. Moreover I got the opportunity = to visit the indigenous people (Manobos) in the mountains and I already = thought about the themes "Mining and land grabbing" during my last = visit.

I am really looking forward to visit the Philippines again. It's a = pleasant anticipation to see the beautiful natural Philippine = environment with all the bright colours and to meet the cheerful = filipino people. In spite of all my good experience in the Philippines I = am aware of the hard life people over there face daily and hope that = we'll again have good dialogues with all the people we meet. Moreover I = hope we can contribute at least a little bit to the international = understanding through our visit abroad.

Roland Seib, married, political scientist with doctorates in = international relations and public administration; main research area: = South Pacific and especially Papua New Guinea (PNG); Consulting on = democracy and conflict as well as development and mining; Consultancies = and research in PNG (since 1987), Australia and Fiji;

At present: independent scholar and author. Commitment with civil society and NGOs for more than 20 years; former = board member of the Pacific network, member of the present working group = on mining and former president of the German Pacific Society; With this field trip I hope to learn more about the Philippines and = especially the field of mining and human rights.

Marina Wetzlmaier I graduated from Development Studies at the University of Vienna/Austria = in November 2011. In my master thesis I analyzed the history and = development of the Philippine land rights movement. I have been = interested in land rights and land reform in the Philippines since I = first got in contact with the movement in 2008. In February/March 2011 I = spent six weeks in the Philippines to conduct my research for the = thesis. I had interviews with NGO workers and visited villages in Bondoc = Peninsula/Quezon Province together with local community organizers. Inspired (and also shocked) by the experiences and things I learned = during this short visit, I decided to continue working on land rights = and natural resources. Beginning in January 2012, I will therefore do an = internship at FIAN Philippines.

I am looking forward to the research trip in February/March, as I hope = to get more insights in the current problems concerning the exploitation = of natural resources and human rights violations. Until now I have only =

dealt with challenges in agricultural production, so the topic of mining = is still new for me. I am sure the trip will be fruitful and I hope that = I will be able to share the experiences with other interested people = back in Austria. My general interest in the Philippines is due to my = roots as my mother is Filipina and many relatives live there.

Dieter Zabel (65): I grew up with my older sister and brother and my = parents in a town of Northern Germany, having close relations to my = relatives in Eastern Germany, then still under the communist rule. = Married with Roswitha, a pastoral worker, we have got three daughters = who are grown up now and are all working as pedagogic professionals. We = are proud on our four lovely grandchildren: two girls aged 12 and 10 = years and two boys, 18 and 3 months old.

After having finished my studies in theology and pedagogy I worked as a = pastoral worker in two dioceses. 1981 I joined missio, the Pontifical = Mission Aid Society of Germany, and used to work mostly in the = Department of Formation and Conscientization, for the last 8 years = in-charge of the Human Rights Desk. Since 1984 I developed my solidarity = relation with the Filipino People, working in a support group and = conceptualizing 11 study tours on justice, peace, human rights, fair = trade and environmental issues. Now I am retired and free to focus my = commitment to the Philippines and Human Rights newly. Thus, I enjoy =

facilitating this Study Tour on Mining in the Philippines, having the = opportunity to include longstanding relations and experiences to = contribute to our group experience.=20

I am looking forward to coming back to this very special country with so = many encouraging people there, and keen to get to know new partners who = are involved in mining and IP's issues and empowerment of poor and = marginalized communities to improve their situation. I Iike to = facilitate our process of mutual learning and sharing in order to foster = meaningful and successful action, which hopefully may contribute to make = our world a more human and just place to live in peacefully.
