SHORT STORIES TO IMPROVE READING LEVEL OF GRADE VI PUPILS IN PALAYAN CITY CENTRAL SCHOOL, S.Y 2011-2012

I. IDENTIFICATION OF THE PROBLEM Reading is a perceptual process. As teacher we are intimately concerned with the readiness of individual for learning. If a pupil has not words, he or she encounters difficulty in his study. Many of our school children lost their desire to read, maybe due to poor reading abilities and difficulties. A. This research aims to determine the causes of reading difficulties and poor comprehension among Grade VI pupils of Palayan City Central School. B. Specifically, the study will answer the following: 1. What are the causes of poor reading abilities of our pupils in Grade VI? 2. What are the common problems/deficiencies involved in oral reading? 3. What other factors cause/affect our pupils desire to read the printed page or books? 4. What particular experiment has been conducted to find out the causes of poor reading comprehension of our pupils? II. ANALYSIS OF THE PROBLEM: The researcher found out that reading skills of pupils have greatly deteriorated. They lost their desire to read because they cannot understand what they read. They lack

comprehension and could hardly sequence the details of what they read. The result is an increasing number of pupils inadequately ready and unprepared for higher lesson.

III. HYPOTHESIS: 1. If the pupils devote their study period to reading books instead of comic, then they will increase their reading skills and develop good study habits. 2. If parents share their time to assist and teach their children at home and avoid the influence of movies, television program, video games, computer games then pupils desire to read will be increased. 3. If teacher in English will provide sufficient lessons in Phonics, word recognition, sequencing of details, proper phrasing, inflection and other reading deficiencies noted, then, pupils reading difficulties and deficiencies will gradually decrease and overcome their reading defects.

IV. PLAN ACTION 1. Make a survey of the common reading deficiencies encountered by pupils in reading orally, and make possible solution. 2. Make experimentation on the reading deficiencies noted and give oral reading test to pupils. 3. Testing pupils comprehension and noting result for possible solutions (40) item-test: Multiple Choices (10), Completion (10), Matching Type (10), Sequencing Details (5), True or False (5). V. IMPLEMENTATION OF THE PLAN: 1. Seventy five (75) grade VI pupils were given oral test using (2) selection- 1st will be given/administered on July, 2nd test administered August and 3rd test administered on October. 2. Comprehension test will be given using the same selection used in oral reading test. VI. EVALUATION VII. RECOMMENDATION
