COOL FOR HOME
ACC Austria in Frstenfeld worked meticulously
on the worlds most energy-effcient compressor
for household cooling appliances for fve years.
With success: the delta compressor achieves an
energy level that surpasses even the current best
and can be categorised Class A
+++
.
In the area of compressors below 100 W this
makes it the lightest and most energy effcient
of its kind in the world. ACC was awarded the
Austrian State Prize for Innovation for it.

ALL UNDER ONE ROOF
The aim of the blueberg european network
for better building network of experts is to
hone green energy concepts that are perfectly
adapted to the structure of a building. The
example of the Linz Science Park (photo

implemented. Based on simulations, the energy
concept itself incorporates the reciprocal effect
of the building shell, structure and technical
building services for the greatest comfort of
users. www.blueberg.at
OIL-FREE PORT
Beginning in April 2011 contaminated site
specialist sowatec, headquartered in the
Styrian town of Schffern, is beginning off
the remediation of a three-hectare area in
the port of St. Petersburg (russia). With the
innovative sowatec process, soil and water
contaminated with mineral oil hydrocarbons
are cleansed without dredging, using air
supply and removal and microorganisms.

ON (THE GREEN) TRACK
VAE Eisenbahnsysteme in Zeltweg proves that
an iron and steel processing company can be
on track with the environment. With health,
safety and environment in mind, the com-
pany has defned an energy strategy whose
content ranges from the construction of a small
hydropower station to thermal insulation and
employee training. At the highest level of ef-
fciency, over 4,000 tonnes of Co
2
have
been prevented so far per year.

MOvE WITH THE SUN
A roundabout has to be lit, thats clear. Thus for
the experts at the Feldbach-based electronics
company e-Lugitsch, it was obvious to produce
the electricity for the lights of the junction at their
doorstep using photovoltaics. No sooner said
than planned than done: since June 2010
a mover with a 106 m PV surface has been
turning with the motion of the sun. By February
2011 it produced 15,991 kWh of electricity.
Far more than the lights need. The surplus is fed
back into the regional grid. www.lugitsch.at

SET TO EXPAND
The new high-performance economiser is the
core of the 7.2 megawatt biomass thermal
power station the company ICS Energietechnik
of Kumberg is building in the East Frisian town
of Wiesmoor for EUr 12 million. The system will
heat a 30-hectare greenhouse, with expansion
chambers enabling a considerable reduction
of emissions in the furnace. Two megawatts of
green electricity will also be fed into the grid via
a steam turbine and turbo generator.

COOL FOR bUSINESS
What Miami stands for? No question: summer,
sun and co. But insiders know it also stands for
energy and environmentally friendly commercial
freezing and cooling. The rottenmann-based
frm AHT Cooling Systems produces a plug-in
freezing and cooling unit using e-conomize
technology which consumes approx. 50
percent less electricity than comparable units. It is
illuminated with LEd lighting and environmentally
friendly propane is used as a coolant. Thus Mi-
ami is entirely CFC- and PFC-free. www.aht.at

BITS OF PAPER
Every sheet deserves a second chance
Styrian Tali Tormoche, alias Sirius Five, long
had the idea of doing something useful with
the scads of paper printed on one side only
every day, but it was not until 2010 that he
actually implemented it: with the designers from
Onomato and university printer Klampfer the
paper is bound into blocks called Re-Block.
The project was promptly awarded the
Re-Design Network Award. A long-term
marketing concept is now in development.
Companies that want to have their paper
re-blocked please reply. www.reblock.at
Cradle to cradle is Michael Braungarts philosophy:
waste is to be planned as a resource from the very start.
There can be a little more waste or emissions, if they are
useful to the environment.
Everything in Flux
Cycles. There is one for biological goods and
one for the technical achievements of modern
life. A cycle, that is, in which every (waste) pro-
duct mutates into a raw material for new pro-
ducts, cradle to cradle (C2C), so to speak.
The Department for Economic and Tourism De-
velopment of the city of Graz has dedicated
itself to this philosophy since 2008. As part of
this, at the beginning of the year it held the
C2C Congress at the Kunsthaus Graz. Chemist
and conceiver of the idea Michael Braungart
took them up on the invitation. ECO WORLD
MAGAZiN asked him for an interview.
Would you defne C2C once more?
its quite simple: its not about producing less
of something bad, but something truly good.
in fact in all areas of life and with respect to
all of processes related to production: from the
energy used to employees working conditions
and the transportation criterias.
Makes sense, but its not new. Is this just
sustainability and environmental protection
under a new name?
No, because its not about conservation, but in-
telligent use. if products are returned to a cycle,
which means they dont become waste, then
the abandonment of them is entirely unneces-
sary. A healthy tree doesnt give up any of its
abundance: it blossoms in all its splendour and
produces all sorts of fruit. it doesnt produce
any waste in the process. Nature knows no
waste, only nutrients. The simple formula was-
te is food is derived from this.
How can a company implement this for itself?
Unfortunately, i cant offer anything like a ten-
point programme that puts everyone on the
same agenda, as every company has its in-
dividual processes and products. Everything
must always be considered in detail in order to
recognise the potentials. The C2C community
is networking internationally now, so its pos-
sible to ask companies how they approached
certain issues as well as getting all sorts of sup-
port from public offces like the city of Graz.
Globally, there are already about 200,000
products manufactured by companies such as
Backhausen, Philips, Nike and Ford in con-
formity with C2C. A Styrian example is the
childrens furniture maker Perludi.
BAMBOO
STRUCTURES
Often parents are less than thrilled
about toys that are made in China
due to the possibility of harmful substanc-
es. With its bamboo toys, the Swiss company
Xibambam proves that ecologically important
material for toys also comes from China. The
materials advantages: cultivation is easy,
pesticides are not required, and it grows within
a few weeks right next to the production site.
Only the transportation route to Europe lowers
the ecobalance. Otherwise, the sustainable
production of this creative toy is actually quite
simple. www.xibambam.ch
PATCH OF FOREST
This patch of forest has a lot
to offer. After all, its a special chocolate
creation by Styrian culinary artist Josef Zotter,
for which one tree for every sold bar is planted
in the rain forest. There are already about
100,000. The project is lasts through to the
end of the year. Zotters partners are the WWF,
Austrian Federal Forests and the Ministry of Life.
The current forest stand can be accessed online.

WASTE dESIGn
Anyone who hears the word Maultaschen (a
Swabian version of ravioli) immediately thinks
of Stuttgart. But the Maultaschen from Robert
Matzke of 5sued in Dresden have little in
common with the Swabian dish. Ment are the
chic recycling containers for separating waste
that won the Saubermacher EcoBox design
competition. They pay respect to valuable
resources such as paper, aluminium & co.
www.saubermacher.at
ALTERnATIVE dRIVE
Of course its nice that the European Commission now stipulates
standard plugs for mobile phone chargers. This way the chances of
charging the battery even if you dont have your own charger with you
are greater. Somewhere theres always one lying around. But an adios
to entangled cables certainly applies to alternative systems that supply
green energy for iPhones and Co, like the Solar Surge solar charger
or wind-powered iFan. Both handsets are all-in-one, so no other
device is needed. While the solar solution has already been licensed
by Apple and is to be launched at the end of the year, designer Tjeerd
Veenhoven is still seeking production partners for his small wind power
system. A nice secondary effect of the invention: the iFan-equipped
mobile phone can be mounted on a bicycle thus it has a health-related
advantage for the user who knows what hes pedalling for.

ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNOLOGY ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNOLOGY

Taking Every Resource into Account
Resource management not only means correctly separating and recycling waste. Rather, it is a
matter of incorporating all of the factors relevant to environmental and energy technology into
an overall concept. In 2020 the province of Styria intends to be the trailblazer in sustainable
resource management.
Paper here, plastic there. Aluminium here, glass
there. Biowaste here, non-recyclable waste
there. Thats right, Styrians know what has to
be separated. Over 70 percent of household
waste lands in the proper recycling bin. In the
municipal collection centres for recyclables 77
types of waste are collected and the overall re-
cycling rate is 79 percent. On the other hand,
the share of non-recyclable waste has been
lowered by 29.8 percent. The fgures show
that scarcely anyone here doubts that rubbish
contains valuable resources. So far, so good.
That separating rubbish alone is far from any-
thing constituting resource management be-
comes clear when taking a look at the term
resource as defned in the Austrian Waste
Management Act or the latest announcement
by the European Commission, A Resource-Ef-
fcient Europe Flagship Initiative of the Europe
2020 Strategy. Sustainable resource man-
agement is about the preservation of natural fea-
tures such as soil, water, air, climate, resources,
biomass and energy. Furthermore, social and
economic aspects are taken into consideration
and the conservation of resources emphasised
in order to ensure the foundation of life for future
generations, explains Wilhelm Himmel, sus-
tainability coordinator for the province of Styria
and director of Department 19D Waste and
Material Flow Management. In Styria regional-
ism is also a central issue, he says, and Ingrid
Winter, offcer for the provincial waste manage-
ment plan (L-AWP) in Department 19D, explains
that awareness-raising is the catchword. De-
velopment into a recycling society shaped by
the conservation of resources is to be ultimately
enabled. Thus the L-AWP 2010 is to be seen
as a concept for the implementation of sustain-
able resource management.
Styrian Projects
The province of Styrias vision is to adopt a pio-
neering role in sustainable resource manage-
ment by 2020. In the scope of this, projects
are being initiated such as
Smart Parties, in which
the volume of waste at
large events is reduced
by 90 percent by using
recyclable dishes and
regional value
creation boost-
ed multiple times using regional food. The
spread of Re-Use Shops throughout Styria is
also underway. These involve entrusting the col-
lection and repair of old furniture or textiles with
social-economic enterprises in order to return
the products obtained to the consumption cycle.
This preparation for reuse is one of the new
areas anchored in the L-AWP 2010. Thus the
vision of the pioneering role is an entirely realis-
tic undertaking. After all, many Styrians are al-
ready participating in the programmes and are
looking beyond the edge of the rubbish bin.
Modern resource management
includes all factors, from soil,
air, water and climate, to
innovation, technologies and
man himself.
Valuable
Wastewater
That water is a valuable resource for life is in-
disputable. What is less known is that waste-
water is a valuable resource for recycling
valuable substances such as metals, acids and
salts. Copper, for example, can be recovered
from the wastewater from printed circuit board
production, nickel from galvanic rinse water
and tantaric acid from the passivation of alu-
minium. In view of the steadily rising commod-
ity prices the price of copper rose by 40
percent in the second half of 2010 recycling
from wastewater is becoming economically
more interesting.
Recovery of valuable substances through
freeze concentration
Joanneum Research has developed an innova-
tive process for this: the selective recovery of
resources from component currents of process
and wastewater by means of freeze concen-
tration. The process is based on the various
properties of the crystallisation of water content
at various temperatures, Arnold Stuhlbacher of
the research group Industrial Water Manage-
ment and Wastewater Technologies explains.
Previously, the process was used primarily in the
pharmaceutical industry in production. The new
technology is based on the principle that a salt
solution in the water has a eutectic freezing
point and due to the various densities and par-
ticle sizes the salt and ice crystals formed can
be recovered again separately.
The process of freeze concentration requires
considerably less energy than other thermal
processes. For example, freezing one kilo of
water requires just 1/7 the energy required by
vaporisation. In addition, due to the low temper-
atures the chemical structure does not change
and no volatile substances are lost. There are
possible applications in the treatment of corro-
sive media, as with lye in the metal-processing
industry, says Joanneum researcher Stuhlbach-
er, or in the recovery of water-soluble materi-
als and organic substances. Compared to
other separating technologies such as vacuum
vaporisation, ultra- and nanofltration, reverse
osmosis, electrodialysis and membrane distilla-
tion, freeze concentration has advantages such
as cost-savings for certain applications.
Interdisciplinary cooperation
Industrial Water Management and Wastewa-
ter Technologies is one of six research groups
at RESOURCES Institute for Water, Energy
and Sustainability. Other research groups are
the Laboratory Centre for Isotope Hydrology
and Environmental Analytics, Water Resource
Management, Geophysics and Geothermy,
Energy Research and Chemical and Techni-
cal Plant Utilisation. According to institute di-
rector Otto Nowak, the interdisciplinary coop-
eration of these six highly specialised research
groups is taken advantage of in order to react
to R&D challenges quickly, competently and
innovatively and to offer companies a high
standard of technology and product develop-
ments as well as consulting services.
