Introduction In this vision of the not-so-distant future the thing that unites all these different activities is the Internet -- and these are only the beginning of the ways the global computer network will change our lives. As technologists reflect on the great inventions of the millennium and turn once again to predictions for a Star Trek future, the Net will undoubtedly figure as one of the biggest leaps forward of the last century. Dot com and .co.uk addresses adorn advertisement hoardings across the country, and the Internet and its effects are discussed by heads of state. Both US president Bill Clinton and UK Prime Minister Tony Blair are keen to be seen as techno-friendly, and use the Internet to promote both themselves and their countries. Communication has come a long way since cavemen painted their dinner on the wall -- and nothing has evolved faster than the Internet. In just thirty years the Internet has grown from a broken memo between two professors at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology into the biggest medium for global communication the world has ever seen. First there was radio, then TV and as we fade out of the second millennium the Internet looks to be a third communications revolution. Experts argue that the Internet is not merely evolving but revolutionising our lives. And that revolution is only just beginning, according Paul Saffo, a leading futurist and director of California's Institute for the Future. Saffo says we are all revolutionaries on the Net, voting with our mouses. What we see of the Internet now is not the future, he believes. "Will we recognise the Net in five years? Absolutely not," he said in a recent interview. And the revolution will not be led from PCs, he predicts. "We will look back 30 years from now and we're going to say the personal computer was very interesting, but it was the horseless carriage of this whole thing. The real revolution's going to be working in devices that people hardly notice." Online communities are offering people the first glimpses of true democracy according to Daniel Berger, "Chief Fool" of online investment site The Motley Fool. He believes communities dedicated to political issues will gain the power to influence government and decision-making in twenty years' time, "redefining society and enhancing human experience". But there is a down-side to the new democracy the Internet brings. For those without access there is a risk of disenfranchisement and the new generation of have-nots will be lacking knowledge rather than money. A recent MORI survey found that inequality between the online and offline communities is a major concern to Brits. The feeling was echoed by President Clinton, who claimed at an economics forum in Florence last month that the Internet was creating a new era of knowledge inequality. And it is not just access that worries users. Content is also a hot potato and no discussion of the Internet would be complete without a mention of porn. Sex is the biggest traffic driver on the Net and snatches more of the headlines than almost any other aspect of Net culture. And it is not about to go away. With ADSL bringing greater bandwidth to the Internet ADSL, Ovum analyst Tim Johnson predicts porn will be a major driver as enthusiasts queue to see video-quality pictures from the privacy of their computer screen. But the porn debate is mainly a smokescreen, with the benefits far outweighing the disadvantages, according to BT Futurist Ian Pearson. He believes the Internet will take over many of the menial tasks that currently take up brainpower and time in the manual world, like shopping. With the smart fridges of the future, a Net application will monitor our food supplies and automatically order more when it runs out. With the Net taking control of such jobs, Pearson believes we will have more time to devote to ourselves. "The Internet will enable us to move from the information age to the caring age," he said. "Once we automate most of the physical and administrative demands of daily life, we

will have the chance to explore our own humanity." With so much riding on the Internet, the big question is how it will cope. Doom-mongers have been predicting a huge Internet crash for years now and certainly the bandwidth feeding our Net obsession will have to increase dramatically to cope with the demand expected in the next few years. Research firm Forrester predicts that 60 million Europeans and 77.6 million Americans will be online by 2003 and they will all be bandwidth-hungry. Basically the Net is going to have to cope with a whole lot more data traffic than it currently does. New routing technologies will have to introduced as backbone providers scramble to make ever fatter pipes to cope with demand. Satellite and wireless will also play a part as the Internet moves off the PC and onto handheld devices; wireless Internet technology is now seeing growing interest from investors and venture capitalists. The ubiquitous nature of the Net will allow people access to more information than ever before. While no-one predicts the death of print in the near future, the Internet has one major advantage over print -- its ability to personalise information. Everyone will have their own personal news, events and shopping page in twenty years time according to Richard Pollack, head of behavioural analysis at Ronin Research. He predicts the Internet will turn psychiatrist, knowing more about us than we know ourselves and becoming the "ultimate observer of human behaviour". With knowledge at our fingertips whenever we require it, the Net could revolutionise the way we learn according to educationalists. Chris Thatcher, president of the National Association of Head Teachers, believes children in twenty years time will spend less time in the classroom and more time remote-learning via the Web. The Internet will take the place of blackboards and books will be replaced by online devices. "Teachers will adopt mentor roles and much of the curriculum will be received via the Internet," he predicted. "Knowledge will take a second place to developing the skills to use, manipulate and analyse the information the Web will provide." President of research firm Internet marketing solutions Odin Wortman predicts 230 million people worldwide will be on the Net by 2001. But he sounds a note of caution about ever-growing Net fever, forecasting fatigue as consumers get bored of the online world. "After all, a walk in the park can still be more fun than the world's coolest Web site," he said. Furthermore, I will discuss both on pros and cons of the Internet in the following part.

Main part: Advantages and Disadvantages of the Internet Ten years ago, the Internet was practically unheard of by most people. Today, the Internet is one of the most powerful tools throughout the world. The Internet is a collection of various services and resources. According to Russ Brock, a director and consultant at the Center for Innovation and Inquiry, the Internets main components are E-mail and the World Wide Web. Theres a lot more to the Internet than E-mail, search engines, celerity web sites, up-to-thesecond sports scores, and chat rooms full of risqu discussions. The Net also ranks as one of todays best business tools - if its used adroitly. Almost all households contain the Internet; however, before people connect to the Internet, they need to be aware of its disadvantages and advantages. Many fear the Internet because of its disadvantages. They claim to not use the Internet because they are afraid of the possible consequences or are simply not interested. People who have yet connected to the Internet claim they are not missing anything. Todays technological society must realize, it is up to them to protect themselves on the Internet Half of U.S. adults, or 94 million Americans, arent online. Children using the Internet has become a big concern. Most parents do not realize the dangers involved when their children log onto the Internet. When children are online, they can easily be lured into something dangerous. When children talk to others online, they do not realize they could actually be talking to a harmful person. As a result, there have been many cases where children have been convinced to meet people they have talked with online. In fact, stories seem to come out every week: a child or teenager lured into something foolish, dangerous, or even deadly on line . Cathy Cleaver of the Family Research Council claims that it is against the law for a molester to even attempt to find children online . In addition, children may also receive pornography online by mistake; therefore, causing concern among parents everywhere. Whether surfing the Web, reading newsgroups, or using email, children can be exposed to extremely inappropriate material. Pornographic sites tend to make sure they are the first sites to be listed in any search area; thus, children come across such sites easily. A man from Pearl, Mississippi was arrested in 1996 for downloading pornographic images of children from the Internet. He was charged with 290 counts of child pornography . Some critics say that parents are responsible for their own children on the Internet because there are available services to protect children. To keep children safe, parents and teachers must be aware of the dangers. They must actively guide and guard their children online. Parents should talk to their children about what is online and what might happen online, claims Howard Rheingold, writer of The Virtual Community . There are a number of tools available today that may help keep the Internet environment safer for children. Some companies, such as America Online, try to monitor everything that is said and done on their online service; however, because thousands of chat rooms are available, it is simply impossible for everything to be monitored, claims Tricia Primrose, worker for America Online . In other words, children want to explore things; however, there are people on the Internet that are just too persuasive. Another major disadvantage of the Internet is privacy. Electronic messages sent over the Internet can be easily snooped and tracked, revealing who is talking to whom and what they are talking about. As people surf the Internet, they are constantly giving information to web

sites . People should become aware that the collection, selling, or sharing of the information they provide online increases the chances that their information will fall into the wrong hands. Consequently, they will become a victim of identity theft, one of the worst privacy violations with potentially devastating financial consequences . When giving personal information on the Internet, people should make sure the Web site is protected with a recognizable security symbol. On the other hand, this does not mean they are fully protected because anyone may obtain a users information . In other words, the most common Internet crimes are frauds and con games . Today, not only are humans getting viruses, but computers are also. Computers are mainly getting these viruses from the Internet; yet, viruses may also be transmitted through floppy disks. However, people should mainly be concerned about receiving viruses from the Internet. Some of these dangerous viruses destroy the computers entire hard drive, meaning that the user can no longer access the computer. Virus protection is highly recommended. Despite all of the terrible disadvantages of the Internet, there are numerous advantages. In fact, the advantages out weigh the disadvantages. Alcestis Oberg uses elderly people as an example of those who benefit the most from the Internet; a great deal of elders are shut in their homes due to health problems. She also claims the Internet became one more social avenue in our lives . Entertainment is another popular reason why many people surf the Internet. Downloading games, going into chat rooms, or just surfing the Web are some of the uses people have discovered. There are numerous games that may be downloaded from the Internet at no charge . Chat rooms are popular because users can meet new and interesting people. In fact, the Internet has been used by people to find life long partners. When people surf the Web, there are numerous things that can be found. Music, hobbies, news and more can be found on the Internet. Another popular thing to do on the Internet is to check out the news. Almost all local news can be obtained through the Internet. Up to date sports scores are probably the most popular looked at news. Sports scores are updated on the Internet as soon as the game ends. . Weather is also a popular source to look up on the Internet. Using the Internet to get the weather allows people to view weather all over the world. Live radar all over the country and local forecasts are just to name a few of the things that may be obtained for weather information on the Internet. Shopping online has also become a huge success and is considered a great advantage of the Internet. No matter what people are shopping for, it can be found on the Internet. People do not even have to leave their homes. A few companies have collected millions of dollars using the Internet for selling Disadvantages: 1. Excessive use of the Internet networks on people's health and social disadvantage. Carnegie? Mellon University's Robert and his colleagues on some subjects at the beginning and after the use of the Internet in 2012 had a personality assessment, found that: people spend more time online with their loved ones less communication, real life, the less friends, feel lonely and depressed at the same time.

2. Will be a lot of time for online chat, games, etc., there is no time for learning, and friends, and even do not have time to sleep, it will skip class, boiled overnight success plummet. 3. Experts said that a long time Internet access, easy to focus, mental power extreme, and then induced a series, such as recurrent headache, migraine headache, vision damage, "mouse hand", "Computer face" and other problems. 4. First of all young people the Internet is one of the major hazards will affect the vision. According to statistics, regular access to the Internet the proportion of students in the shortsighted about 60%. Against the second-largest computer released by the radiation, the harm is very strong. Anti-side the first participant: The reason why we think access to the Internet does more harm than good, is that there are many areas not suitable for us. We have summed up the discussion the following drawbacks of the Internet: First of all, electricity and telephone bills has risen sharply and is now the universal family. After an investigation, the long-term access to the Internet home phone bills are more than 200 yuan, not only that, the Internet also may lead to parents and the conflicts between the children, and if some unhealthy websites, would seriously affect the physical and mental health of young people, vulnerable so that students from going astray and doing regular jobs, abandoned the study, but also cause decreased vision, lack of sleep-related diseases such as, in our point of view clear again that the Internet does more harm than good. The second side of participant: Online games to study the impact of our normal, it makes us crazy, and finally, give up their studies, and this is because we young people have not the capacity of a strong self-control, parents also need help and counseling, so the Internet is definitely not young people greater than the profits! Anti-participant third parties: Young people will waste a lot of time online, resulting in decreased academic performance, not to mention the Internet can help to learn, if the Internet can really help you improve the performance of the case, why is such a great country to invest the human and material resources to improve our education sector? Even if the knowledge can be learned online, then why should you every day carrying a bag to school then? Home online self-learning is not simply better? Clinics to save each year for parents to spend a thousand dollars you go to school! The fourth side of participant: Excessive use of the Internet on people's health and social disadvantage. Carnegie? Mellon University's Robert and his colleagues on some subjects at the beginning and after the use of the Internet in 2012 had a personality assessment, found that: people spend more time online with their loved ones less communication, real life, the less friends, feel lonely and depressed at the same time. Therefore, the Internet does more harm than good.

Concluding part: Internet, this new network is to bring a certain amount of interest, but it is always greater than the harm profits. First of all, is subjective body and mind of a double blow, a large number of radiation caused decreased visual acuity, the number of non-performing network of sites, all the time is no longer the soul of our Destroyed. Secondly, the objective of the surge in telephone charges, the constant waste of time, or even play all night, lack of sleep has become a very common problem! Of course, there are many other issues, a lot of money "spent" in all of this is all due to "on-line" credit. Therefore, the Internet for us more harm than good. Many students find themselves unable to indulge in the network, - we call it a "poisoning" not only delay their studies, but also damage to the physical and mental health, it is hardly surprising that "Parents worry about, worry about teachers, schools worried about." According to statistics, in 2005, China's Internet users reached 94 million, 18 years of age accounted for 18.8% of Internet users. In other words, China's access to the Internet nearly 18 million minors. In the cities, the current ratio of primary and secondary school students and 25.8% Internet, 30 percent for junior high school students, high school students has reached 56%. At the same time, research also shows that the incidence of Internet addiction between the ages of 15-year-old -40 years old, one of the network of young people addicted to Internet users as much as 10% -15%. Young people are susceptible to high-risk population in school as a result of Internet addiction led to the prospect of a criminal case also occur from time to time. Youth Internet addiction has become a growing social problem. June 24 "First Watch" program broadcast on the "juvenile Internet addiction" exists for the current phenomenon of youth Internet addiction is analyzed and discussed. Internet addiction is a group of young students in the prevalence of the phenomenon has aroused the anxiety of parents of students with anxiety, but also attracted attention to the education sector. While computers and networks has become a modern man is an integral part of daily life, in people's life and work plays a decisive role in the functions of a strong network of people working and studying is a big help. But precisely because of its powerful features, which imply a lot of network problems. Virtual space for the network to determine the capacity of poor and a strong curiosity and desire to explore young people at work, also played a negative role. The negative effects of such serious harm to young people when the student's learning, life and health, many of the attendant social problems. Indulged in the network dropped out of school, running away from home, even criminal incidents, two students from the Internet overnight and were sleeping on the railroad tracks ran over the 17-year-old teenagers were online a few jokes and then went to 100 Internet cafes in the attack outside, several dozen students and a few days for the Internet there are a lot of young people obsessed with the Internet and abandoned their studies ... ... This is a matter of education for the current example of a wake-up call. Network to open the children's window to the world, but networks also let the kids have lost their direction before, communicate with others closed the door to the soul. We can not help asking whether the Internet age has brought us what? Network, to what young people should be what?

"Computer is not a great scourge, this is not the fact that children also easily lead to resentment. We must tell the child, in the final analysis, the computer is a tool that is used to us, rather than play; learn how to use smart people who only people who will be playing is stupid. "- TAO Hong-Kai The Internet is a gorgeous colorful world, many young people because the world is too wonderful here, and created a real life and too much contrast, it has been deeply attracted to the world online. However, in addition to their own factors, their living environment in which their Internet addiction is an important reason. According to the survey, Internet addiction and a lack of care for most young people, lack of communication, empty of life, and family violence. Many students bored in real life, dissatisfied with the existence of many students interpersonal difficulties, because of personality, such as family problems such as poor interpersonal relationships, but on the network are not obstacles to such contacts, so they are trying to simulate a virtual network reality, in order to achieve stimulation and emotional venting, access to daily life can not get satisfaction. This is an evasion of the real-life situations. It is precisely because such a variety of reasons, the children's fascination with the network, so that their network has become a kind of spiritual sustenance, in the network of self-searching. Be appreciated by other people's recognition and a sense of achievement, is anyone willing to enjoy. However, it is difficult to real-life achievements of such a satisfaction, and the network can provide to the children of such a space: network game, conceited, self-pleasure at the core; and strangers chatting kind of natural and the feeling of impunity, as well as in real life can not be the vent, so that they have friends to find comfort and pleasure, they are here to enjoy a paradise for the release of psychological stress. All in all, great to meet all of these confused, rebellious and curious about the children's psychological needs. The Internet is important in our daily life. The Internet is of important use today. We cannot live without Internet now.We are able to do a lot of things using Internet, for example,we can download information to help us study,we can read English articles to improve our ability,we can practice speaking English and writing English.Besides, communication is more convinient. We can send e-mails and make telephone calls with Internet. We can even buy products online! It's interesting, isn't it? The Internet is important,I like the Internet. A On the Internet The Internet is playing a more and more important part in our daily life. On the net, we can learn news both at home and abroad and all kinds of other information as well. We can also send messages by e-mail, make phone calls.go to net school, read various kinds of books and learn foreign languages by ourselves. Besides, we can enjoy music, watch sports matches and play chess or cards. On the net, we can even do shopping, have a chat with others and make friends with them. In a word, the internet has made our life more colorful. B On the Internet Nowadays Internet has become more and more important part of our life. It can help us know the latest news at home and abroad and other news as well. On the Internet, we can send messages by e-mail, which is faster and easier. On the Internet, there are net schools, which people can go into staying at home. Also, all kinds of books are for us to read and we can

learn foreign languages by ourselves. When tired of working, we enjoy music and movies, watch sports matches or play games with other friends on line. On the net, people even can go shopping. The Internet makes it easier to chat with others and make friends. All in all, with the Internet, people have enjoyed more and more colorful life. Nowadays, computer plays an important role in our lives, including the daily life and the study. Because of the computer, we have another word into our life, too- Internet. Internet can not be a remote place for ordinary persons these days. This term the computers in our dormitories are connected with the Internet. I think it is a great thing for us students. As we all know, this is informational times, and the information is changing every day, every minute, even every second. The newspapers, magazines and TV programes can not satisfy us any longer. We need much faster machine to help us search the information, know the world. In my opinion, Internet in dormitory do more good than harm. Several years ago, there was a saying that the globe was becoming more and more smaller, just like a village. And now Internet becomes a part of this big village. To be college students in 21st century, everyone should know the computer, the Internet, not just for show off, but for the progress of ourselves. Generally speaking, we can do a lot of things on Internet: searching information, sending or receiving E-mails, talking with others on Internet, buying cheaper goods and so on. Besides, we are English Major students, we need more things on English to enrich our minds and boarden our views. I always browse through some websites like The New York Times or holy bibles to read world news or stories. And it helps me to enlarge my vocabulary and knowledge and also saves me a lot of time on searching newspapers and books in the library or bookstore. How amazing! Maybe someone will say Internet is not suitable for us students, especially the weak-willed ones because they will addict themselves to the computer games or something else on Internet. Honestly, some contents on Internet are violent and dirty, which will corrode peoples soul. Further more, the long chattering on Internet will hinder peoples study and rest. But all that negative affects occur in those who are weak-willed persons. Although theres no Internet in dormitory, they will still go to the bars to surf. For good students, Internet can lead them a positive way of study and entertainment in their spare time. For example, an English Major student can browse through the website just like The Times and listen to BBC world news and VOA special English programs to improve his reading and listening. In addition, Internet also brings friendships between cities or even countries when we graduate from the school, which saves us lots of money on phones. We can talk and communicate with each other freely through QQ,MSN and some kindred software. It is a economical way for us consumers. The influence of Internet is actually a double-edged sward. We should try to make the most advantages and avoid its harmfulness at the same time. Let the Internet in dormitory be a happy and useful thing to everyone.
