BENNETT LANE WINERY open daily from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. 3340 highway 128, calistoga (707) 942-6684 | 1-877-MAX-nAPA www.bennettlane.com
Big reds, unfortunately, often mean lots of pretense, posturing and extreme pricing. Happily, there is an antidote to such a situation, and its name is Bennett Lane. Owner Randy and Lisa Lynch have only been in the wine business for a decade, but their wines have made quite an impact throughout the wine world. These folks know Cabernet in a few short years like few others ever have in the Valley, and theyve done so without pricing their wines through the roof or putting on airs in the process. These may be relatively new folks to Napa, but that doesnt mean theyre new Napa, if you know what I mean. The best way to express how busy theyve become as a result of their success is to point to the recently remodeled and updated tasting room, necessary to accommodate all the interest. That alone should tell you others have come to recognize that Bennett Lane is a truly special place, staffed by exceptional people, pouring extraordinary wines at prices that astound for what they arent. Trust me: run, dont walk. The winery itself is positioned at the dove-tailing wedge of the eastern Vaca and western Mayacamas at the top of the Valley. The combination of soil, exposure and breeze makes about as perfect a spot for wine as exists anywhere on the planet, and the twenty-two acres of Cabernet vines produce wines that sell out over and over again. Oh, and those vines have produced 33 wines scoring 90+ points in less than a decade, 20 in the last five years alone. The private lane which greets you is surrounded by vines, and the multi-story, artfully shaped winery feels set inside the land. The tasting room is contemporary and funky, a rustic Meditterranean seen through the lens of the North Bay. It gives a mix of natural stone and wood, and the Napa-typical red pine of the barrel room nicely accents the color palette. Outside are multiple decks and pergolas, each providing views of the Mayacamas, and the soft tinkling of the large water fountain accompanies all of this, underlying the feeling of being in the Valley. The winerys new iPad app adds a nice touch since its loaded with info yet unobtrusive for those who want their tasting sans the details. Everything, in other words, has definitely been thought out with the experience in mind. For your tasting, youve got quite a range of choices, too, especially given the attention paid to Cabernet. There are three different Cabs, as well as the renowned Maximus Red Feasting Wine, which adds Syrah into the usual Bordeaux buddies along the way to being the best deal in the Valley for a red wine blend. The latest Maximus release would be reason enough to get up there, but theres plenty more: reserve Chardonnay, Merlot, Syrah, the white Maximus Feasting Wine with its Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Muscat blend; as well as a Port-style dessert wine of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and, enjoyably, Carignane, that now-little-seen favorite of the original planters of the Calistoga area. Here you are, at the pinnacle of the Napa Valley. If you step out onto the nice-but-not-fancy outdoor patio, youve got views you wont ever forget and youve got them without having to give up just hanging out and enjoying life along the way. And, youve got wines you wont want to

BOB PEPI
Turning Grapes into Pleasure for More Than Forty Harvests
BY JoSh Stein
ANDRETTI WINERY open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. See ad on page 5 for 2 for 1 tasting 4162 Big ranch road, napa 1-877-386-5070 | andrettiwinery.com
Bob Pepi is a living embodiment of the last fifty years in the Napa Valley. Like many others, his father purchased land in the mid-sixties in the mid-Valleys Oakville. And, like a number of the Valleys current A-list winemakers, the non-enology college student ended up in wine anyway, taking coursework at UC Davis and St. Helenas Wine Lab. By 1980, the time had come for the founding of the familys winery on the their thenseventy-acre Oakville estate. Bob took over as winemaker, bringing great success and reknown to Robert Pepi Wines for Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese and Sauvigon Blanc. In 1994, the winery was sold to KendallJackson, allowing Bob to become the globe-trotting winemaker hes been ever since, working with folks in Argentina, Lake County, Napa Valley and Colorado, amongst many others. Winemaking alone isnt Bobs gift as the key to his success isnt just time in the cellar but the time spent in the vineyard long before harvest. As you drive through wine country, look for the two-hearted trellis system that splits the vines horizontally and criss-crosses them. This style of vineyard management is known as the Geneva Double Curtain, or GDC to those in the business, and Bob was instrumental in the development of this system and its adoption throughout the Valley; it ameliorates excess vigor while also encouraging better air circulation around the clusters and thus works against rot or mildew in the bunches. Given how rich the Valleys soil is, GDC is often needed to stress the vines and produce more flavorful grapes, using the vines own productivity against itself in service to better wines. And thats where Andretti Winery comes into the picture. The winery was founded in 1996 when legendary race car driver Mario Andretti and his friend, Joseph Antonini, former Chairman, President, and CEO of Kmart Corporation, brought their shared love of Mediterranean cuisine, lifestyles and wines to the Napa Valleys Oak Knoll District, selected because its location just north of the city of Napa provides moderating ocean breezes and weather, cooling the heat of long summer days and prolonging harvest, allowing for more complexity in the resulting wines. Bob has been involved since the beginning in designing the winery to create the best expressions of food-friendly releases from the surrounding forty-two acres. Creating wines which go well with food means approaching the vineyard and winemaking with an eye towards acid levels: You want the fruit to shine forth, remarks Bob. And when you have that crispness from the acidity, it really makes the wines go well with food. This also means working with vineyards in the mid-Valley so that higher alcohols and their deleterious effects on food-and-wine matches are kept at bay. The awardwinning Cal-Ital wines have not disappointed, and given the wide range of wines Bob makes for Andretti Winery, theres something for everyone. Do yourself a favor and travel over to Big Ranch Road and try the results of Bobs forty-plus vintages for yourself youll be glad you did. Enjoy!

Ancient Myths and Vineyard Light Photography Exhibit to Open at Mumm Napa
New Exhibit Runs March 10 - October 14 in Napa Valley
A new exhibit, opening March 10 at Mumm Napas Fine Art Photography Gallery, comes to life with a stunning exploration of photographs of ancient African myths and photographer Janis Miglavs vineyard-related work. The exhibit is titled Ancient Myths and Vineyard Light and will be open to the public at Mumm Napa winery in Rutherford through October 14. The African Myths and Vineyard Light photography exhibit will include color photographs of world-class vineyards and photo-illustrations that narrate some of Africas undiscovered myths. Miglavs fine art photographs show some of the worlds best vineyards in a visually stimulating way, with dramatic pops of color and intense lighting and shadows. Said to be the only person to have recorded such information, his photo-illustrations of African myths were inspired by his travels to African villages, where he learned of local legends and archetypal dreams from village shamans, witchdoctors and storytellers. Miglavs has been teaching and studying photography for many years and has continued to pursue his interest in wine professionally. His work will be available for purchase at the exhibit. The Ancient Myths and Vineyard Light exhibit opens with a sparkling wine reception at Mumm Napa on March 10 from 6:308:30 p.m. The reception and exhibit are open to the public. There is no charge to view the exhibit or attend the reception. Mumm Napa Winery is located at 8445 Silverado Trail, Rutherford. The visitor center and fine art photography gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. For additional information on visiting the winery and its exhibits, call (707) 967-7700 or access the Mumm Napa website at www.mummnapa.com.

SONOMA CUTRER
What does Chardonnay and Croquet Have in Common?
The answer: Sonoma-Cutrer Vineyards! In 1985 Sonoma-Cutrer wanted to create an activity and environment that would be unique among wineries not only in the United States but also around the world to reinforce Sonoma-Cutrers philosophy of making Burgundian style Chardonnay and Pinot noir. It was in that year the two world class croquet courts were built in front of the winery and history was made. The croquet courts were designed and then built incorporating stones from Sonoma-Cutrers Les Pierres Vineyard which is located 45 minutes southeast of the winery near the town of Sonoma. The cobblestone size rocks are used as borders for the two courts and for the seating areas surrounding the courts. It takes a great ongoing commitment from Sonoma-Cutrer as the courts must be cared for on a daily basis to keep them in competition caliber condition. In the early years the croquet courts were used primarily for private events, fundraisers and when restaurants that carried Sonoma-Cutrer would visit from all over the United States to learn more about the winery and the wines that are made on the property. The Sonoma County Croquet Club has been given permission to use the courts over its history when they are not in use by the winery for other events and activities. In 2010 when Sonoma-Cutrer opened to the public for the first time in their 31 year history the croquet courts created the magnificent backdrop for what has become an award winning wine tasting experience. The tasting room opens to a beautiful terrace where most tastings take place during the busy season and which overlook the croquet courts. Guests are encouraged to stay and have a game after they taste on days the courts are open. Beginning in 2011 Sonoma-Cutrer started hosting Chardonnay and Croquet one Sunday a month from April through September. These monthly events are limited to 16 guests and include SonomaCutrer Chardonnay as teams compete in a friendly round robin tournament to become croquet champions for the day. After the games conclude the guests enjoy a gourmet picnic lunch on the terrace to relax, unwind and enjoy the company of their follow players before heading home with a memory that will last a lifetime. Chardonnay and Croquet costs $35 per person and reservations can be made by calling (707) 237-3489 or emailing mark_elcombe@sonomacutrer.com. Sonoma-Cutrer Vineyards invites you to visit and enjoy one of their popular award-winning sit down tastings ($10) or a fun and unique vineyard/cellar tour ($25). Tours and tasting are by appointment. Call (707) 237-3489 to reserve yours today or you can book online at www.sonomacutrer.com. Remember to leave yourself a little time to pick up a mallet and play the wickets before you leave!
SONOMA-CUTRER VINEYARDS open thursday through Monday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. 4401 Slusser road, Windsor (707) 237-3489 | www.sonomacutrer.com

WINEMAKER PROFILE
DIANE WILSON
A Time to Shine
A rising star in Sonoma County winemaking since the moment that her initial release in 1994 garnered a Best of Class, Diane Wilson has been the winemaker to watch. With an outstanding track record of awards over the years, and recognized as one of the most talented winemakers in California, this is Dianes time to shine. Winning the Sweepstakes for Best Red Wine (the third time in seven years!) at the Sonoma County Harvest Fair (October 2011) with her outstanding Zinfandel, she moved on into November by receiving 91 points on three wines in the Wine Spectator, again on her fantastic Dry Creek Valley Zinfandels. And if these accolades werent enough, Diane won an unprecedented quantity of three Best of Class awards and was presented with the prestigious honors of Best of Show and Best Wine by a Women Winemaker in Decembers International Womens Winemaking Competition. The New Year brought twenty-one overall medals from the 2012 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, including nine gold or double gold awards and featuring some new winners in the Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon categories and solidifying the fact that this woman is an exceptional winemaker. With vineyards named after family members, each harvest brings something new for the small-lot, single-vineyard designate winemaker at Wilson Winery. Known in the area for her amazing Zinfandels, Diane Wilson has branched out into different varietals for the new boutique wineries that she and husband Ken have purchased in the past few years. Adding new wines to her portfolio, she has had fun applying known techniques and learning new practices to accommodate their expansion. Local to the North Bay, Diane is an avid runner, and accompanied by companion Molly, her Border Collie, she runs the local trails and paths of beauty in Sonoma County. She enjoys her garden, using what she grows for her savory family meals. Diane loves to discover how food flavors pair with wine, and is often found assessing flavors for varietal pairings, or creating recipes for hors doeuvres to serve at winery events. Dianes innate talent and sense of smell have contributed to the making of her award-winning wines and have also staved off some disasters! This year, she averted a house fire due to her amazing sense of smell. As a winemaker, Diane spends time honing her craft, learning from other esteemed winemakers, and researching methods to keep her au courant with the newest cellaring and winemaking practices. With next years vintages still in the barrel, and already tasting like gold medal winners, one can only guess what amazing wines this next release will bring. One thing is for sure; Diane will continue to add to her evergrowing wine accolades portfolio and produce some of the best wines coming out of Sonoma County, California.

TURNBULL WINE CELLARS open Daily 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. See ad on page 23 for 2-for-1 tasting in the Main tasting and retail room 8210 Saint helena highway, oakville (707) 963-5839 | www.turnbullwines.com
Lovers of photography and wine can sometimes find it difficult to bring these two passions together outside of their own homes on a regular basis, but that is most definitely not the case at Turnbull Wine Cellars, where those who enjoy fine art, photography and site-specific, single-vineyard red wines wont ever want to leave! Its a feast for all the senses. Founded in 1979 as Johnson Turnbull Vineyards, the name and logo were modified slightly after the winery changed hands to publisher Patrick ODell in 1993, resulting in todays Turnbull Wine Cellars and its well-known Minoan turning bull. Current owner ODells background is evident in the photography collection, and its his insistence on enjoying two of his passions together which makes Turnbull stand apart and the great wines themselves, of course! Two options for tasting are always available, and while the current
28
release room with its high wood ceiling, skylights and French-doored garden views are quite attractive, its the Reserve Room that draws me back every time. On the art side, the winery presents two exhibitions a year in The Reserve Room Gallery, drawing from more than 4,000 pieces by renowned photographers, including work from Ansel Adams, Margaret Bourke White, Walker Evans, Yousuf Karsh, Dorothea Lange, Herb Ritts and Edward Weston. The spaces cathedral ceiling, exposed beams, antique bar and barrels highlight one of the West Coasts largest permanent photography locales. Through the end of March, the space hosts Abstract Visions: A Brett Weston Retrospective, and the new Birds of the World exhibit opens April 14th in conjunction with the Napa Arts and Napa Valley Destination Councils Arts in April events. Running through September, this new exhibit features the work of George Edwards, John Gould, John James Audubon, and Mark Catesby, among others. Admission to the gallery, by the way, is always complimentary, so the sober driver or non-imbiber wont feel left out one bit. The reserve wines are equally as stellar as the artwork and the barrels containing subsequent vintages theyre tasted alongside and being able to taste horizontals of the same variety Cabernet Sauvignon as expressed through three different vineyards Amoneus, Fortuna and Leopoldina is quite a treat as each bottling shows off unique characteristics derived from its vineyards soil, elevation, micro-climate and a whole host of other elements all best summed up as simply terroir. Equally, in being able to taste Merlot and Cabernet Franc bottlings from the same vineyards, the impact of terroir on all wines is also made clear. Its quite the tasting and not to be missed. The wines above, and many others, have won a considerable amount of acclaim a half dozen have recently received excellent scores above 90 from the major publications, for example but its the variety of wines available a good two dozen or so in combination with the variety of art also there to be enjoyed with them that makes a visit to Turnbull Wine Cellars truly memorable. If thats not enough to get you to stop by, its spring, which means new releases, including the 2011 Sauvignon Blanc and the limited, tastingroom-only 2011 Ros of Cabernet Sauvignon both just perfect for parties and picnics are now available, too. There are all kinds of great places throughout the Valley, but do yourself a favor and stop in at Turnbull the next time youre here. Once you pull off of Highway 29, youll feel pulled into a whole different way of seeing and enjoying great wines. Enjoy!

Napa Valleys 3rd Annual Wine Auction on the Lawn Moves to Bigger Venue
The Third Annual Wine Auction on the Lawn will be held Sunday, May 6 from 2 to 5 p.m. at Charles Krug/Peter Mondavi Family Winery in St. Helena. A live auction is being added to the silent auction of sought-after wines. Baba Ken Okulolo of The Nigerian Brothers and Nigerias top bassist will be the featured musical guest. The Napa casual fundraising event that started on the lawn of Chris and Christina Madrigal, proprietors of Madrigal Estate Winery, north of St. Helena, has outgrown its original venue. Peter and Katie Mondavi, proprietors of Charles Krug/Peter Mondavi Family and cofounders of the event, are opening the much bigger lawn of their historic St. Helena winery to the public in support of the Foundation for African Medicine & Education (FAME). In early 2012, Katie Mondavi, who served on the clinical faculty of Stanford and as an assistant clinical professor of medicine at UCSF , will be returning to Tanzania to work in FAMEs bush clinics and at its newly opened hospital. Peter and Katie Mondavi, proprietors of Charles Krug/Peter Mondavi Family; Chris and Christina Madrigal, proprietors of Madrigal Estate Winery; and Rudy and Rita von Strasser, proprietors of von Strasser Winery, began hosting the Wine Auction on the Lawn in 2010. They established FAME Napa Valley, a registered non-profit, in support of FAME, which provides consistent, quality medical services in Tanzania to one of the poorest and most medically-underserved areas of the world. Last years auction provided funding for 75% of the meds distributed by FAME. Charles Krug/Peter Mondavi Family Winery is located at 2800 Main Street/Highway 29 in St. Helena and is open daily from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call (707) 967-2229 or visit the website at www.charleskrug.com

Bodega Wine Estates Hosts Irish Stew Cook-off, March 18
by Terri Hiller
Bodega Wine Estate is going green! Irish green that is! At our last food and wine pairing, I asked our winemakers what they would cook for St. Patricks Day and all three gave the same answerbut the similarities stopped right there! These master chefs all began describing their mouthwatering recipes for Irish stew, argued over lamb or beef, with or without carrots, Guinness or red wine, barley or cabbage. About the only thing they agreed upon were the potatoes! And when it came to discussing the spices, Ive never heard more spirited arguments both for or against rosemary. There really wasnt much else to do but to showcase all three recipes. Bodega Wine Estates, home to an incredible case of talented and personable winemakers, will be hosting an Irish stew cook-off on Sunday, March 18. Each of the award-winning vintners will prepare his finest version of this hearty, wine-friendly meal. Never before have so many wines joined their makers for a food pairing bout to make the Irish proud. Bodega Wine Estates well-appointed tasting room will be just the first stop. Follow your nose and meander through the winery to discover more stations where food and wine are paired to thrill your senses, satisfy your hunger and excite the palate. Each of the winemakers: Paul Hoffman (Hoffman Family Cellars), Josh Stein (Stein Family Wines) and Robert Amox (Knightswood Vineyards and Winery) will be there to chat with you, defend their recipes and tantalize you with their wines. Space is limited and you would do best reserving your place for the event in advance. This winery has a reputation for pulling out all of the stops to guarantee the guests have a great, memorable time and is excpected to sell out. Reservations are available at http://wearegoinggreen.eventbright.com. This is a dog-friendly winery and accommodations are always made for Fido as well. Just one additional note, come hungry! Bodega Wine Estates is located at 751 13th Street at Avenue I, Treasure Island, San Francisco and is open Friday, Saturdaya nd Sunday from 1 to 6 p.m. For more information, call (415) 525-4154.
