Coaches Corner
The Chief Coaches held their first meeting of the 2012 season. One of the main topics was the need for change in the direction the organization has been moving over the past several years. This is the year to begin that change and coaches will meet this year in the offseason more then ever before to initiate those changes, and move the Chiefs Program in a positive direction. It is recognized that change is not always welcome at first because we are comfortable with the ways of the past. But the coaches and the Board are excited about the direction we are taking to build the best program in the area.

Results of the Nebraska Midget Football League meeting: The stripper weight for the 11 year olds has been increased to 131 lbs from 126 lbs. The league has granted entry of a new organization Greater Omaha Youth Association; these teams will be from the Millard area and participate in all ages groups. Training: All coaches will be required to complete "Concussion Training" as mandated by the CDC (Center for Decease Control) before the season begins. Players in appropriate age groups: As an organization we feel it is important that players play in their correct age groups (i.e.. 7 & 8 year olds on the 7 & 8 year old team, 9 year olds on the 9 year old team ect.) We believe this not only provides the best opportunity for the players to learn and become better players it also enables the organization to continue to grow with minimal disruption. The Board also recognizes that there are instances in which a player playing up an age group may be necessary and will look at those request from parents on a case by case basis. Playbook: The playbook the Chiefs have used over past 40 years is outdated and does not serve all age groups well. The coaches have begun to form committees to address the playbook and begin to draft a new one that will use terminology that is currently used at the High School and College level. The desired outcome is for players to have continuity from year to year not only in the terminology but also in the techniques they are taught. For players completing the Chiefs program this will give them a greater advantage over other players entering High School Football Programs, as they will have a stronger understanding of the game and the fundamentals required to participate at that level. Nebraska Coaches Clinic: Many of the Chiefs coaches will be attending the Nebraska Coaches Clinic at the University of Nebraska on March 8th, 9th and 10th. This is an annual clinic put on by NU Athletic Department, and is attended by about 900 coaches from across the state and country. Coaches may attend talks by NU position coaches, guest coaches lecturing on topics from Practice Organization, to Offensive Philosophy. The Keynote Speaker for this years clinic is Coach Bill Belichick- Head Coach New England Patriots.
