A Western professor is aiming to fight cancer with an unconventional methodmaking the tumors a bloody mess. Geoff Pickering, a professor at Westerns faculty of biochemistry, is focusing his research on treatment that helps tumors create blood vessels, in stark contrast to the usual treatment of depriving them of vessels. Theres been a lot of good work in the area of depriving the tumor of blood, and it has been successful to a certain degree, [] but not necessarily to the extent that people were anticipating, Pickering explained. So the other way of looking at it is to recognize that the tumor vessels themselves are quite abnormal, and even though they de-
liver some blood to the tumor, they dont do it in a regulated way. Pickerings treatment aims to tame the tumor to make it less destructive. The strategy might be to enhance the blood vessels to the tumor, which might make it a little less aggressive, and subsequently more responsive to treatment, Pickering said. Pickering went on to explain his research is in the preliminary stages. Wed be using models of tumors in mice and looking at the effects [of our treatment] in those situations. Aaron Zaltzman

Horwood noted he was mostly nervous due to the implications a criminal record would have on his professional life. Due to the nature of my work
and my job, having a criminal record would mean I wouldnt be able to do business with the States, or travel to the United States, and thats potentially worrisome, he said. Precisely when Horwood will appear in court is up to both his lawyers and the judicial system, Rivest stated.
In the meantime, Horwood is trying to stay positive. I believe that if you go out there with good intentions, and are generally positive about things, then the world kind of treats you in return with the same sort of respect, he concluded.

over 300 centres responsible for providing employment services to youth under 25 across Canada. The Service Canada Centres for Youth have provided in-person employment assistance to Canadian youth for over four decades. Not only is it cutting jobs that are offered to students, because those centres do employ students, but at the same time its going to make it harder for youth and students to know which jobs are available, Roxanne Dubois, national chair of the Canadian Federation of Students, explained. Dwindling attendance at SCCY locations, coupled with the growing number of youth turning to the Internet to search for jobs, were the primary reasons for closures. Kelly Hobson

Forge vs. Fearnall
Andrew Forgiones term is coming to an end, and Adam Fearnalls term is soon beginning. Before speculating on how Fearnall will perform as the University Students Council president, lets look back and see what we were expecting of Forgione at this time last year, and how he ended up doing in hindsight. Forge followed through on many of his campaign promises, giving students cellphone chargers and a midnight breakfast during the exam period. He was the popular guy with a bunch of nice ideas to make student life a little more bearable, and we trusted him to keep the ship on course. Although he didnt take us to any new, exotic places, he didnt sink the ship, either. There are some larger accomplishments that Forge has under his beltthe Mustang Express, for examplebut a lot of these were already in motion before his tenure. There have been some hacker-related bumps in the road, but these cant be blamed on any of the USC executives. The biggest failure of the year was probably the lack of satisfying response to the infamous summer retreatbut even still, retreats have been in place long before this years board, which just happened to be the first group to be called out on it. With Fearnall, we are on course for another year of not crashing and sinking. A knowledgeable USC president with no radical stances on student government is definitely not the worst thing in the world, but it would be nice to see the boat rocked a little bit. The USC isnt perfect. The majority of students are still uninvolved or even unaware of any form of student government, effectively amounting to taxation without representation. And issues like Access Copyright, where students ended up getting marginalized, seem to remain purely in the hands of the administration. Some people want their president to be a nice person who reaches out to students. Some want a strong politician to face off with the administration and make sure students are being treated fairly. The past few years, weve mostly seen the former, and next year probably wont see much change. Nothing radical will come out of our next executive. Whether they try to achieve nice little superficial things or broader, more meaningful things, we can all agree that they had better justify all the money theyll inevitably be spending on that retreat. Kaleigh rogers MulTiMedia direcTor Patrick Callegaro strides across the floor and lithely bends over at the waist. He slowly glides back up and snaps into a pose, as the band behind him plays a comical crescendo. Callegarothe director and choreographer of Theatre Westerns Legally Blonde: The Musicalwas demonstrating the perfect bend and snap during this weekends rehearsal, in form enough to rival Reese Witherspoon herself. Ive been dancing and singing and acting and playing instruments for as long as I can remember, Callegaro says. Theatres always been something Ive loved and Im really excited for this opportunity. The show is truly Callegaros pet project. Early in the year, Theatre Western takes proposals from members for their next show. They consider the popularity, feasibility and size of the show before choosing, and this year they picked Callegaros pitch to do Legally Blonde. Based on the film of the same name, Legally Blonde was adapted to a Broadway musical in 2007 and has been touring ever since. Just like the original show, Callegaro says Theatre Westerns production promises to be lively, funny and very, very pinkbut that doesnt mean its just

for girls. Straight guys dont like to admit it, but they love the movie, he jokes. Its just a fun musical. You get into the story and the characters are so lovable that I think anyone will have a good time at this musical. Part of that lovable cast is lead Alex Folkes, who landed the coveted role of Elle Woods. With her long blonde strandsnatural, she saysand tan skin, you might think she was simply typecast as the Barbie doll lead, but Folkes says shes out to prove theres a lot more to herand Ellethan blonde hair. Elle is a very easy character to judge because shes in 95 per cent of the show, Folkes says. I guess I just wanted to prove that I deserved the role because I think a lot of people assumed that I was typecast. But I think Ive proven myself now. During rehearsal, Folkes was confident and breezy, bouncing and dancing around the stage in four-inch heels with the ease of a seasoned pro. At one point, after donning a highlighter pink dress for the first time, she squealed, I look like a Barbie! in perfect Elle Woods form. Equally pleased with the costume was Sarah Farrant who oversees set, costumes and props as the shows production designeror as she likes to call herself, official pink-ifier. She says while some shows might not put an emphasis on costume, theres no getting around the importance of outfits for Legally Blonde. Through a combination of borrowed items, bought items and a few original creations, Farrant has crafted a collection of glittery, pink and girly ensembles. I mean its Legally Blonde, right? The
character is Elle Woods, she obviously has a passion for the fashion industry. She got a 4.0 in fashion merchandising, Farrant laughs. So many of the songs and so many of the lines are about [her clothes] that if it went unrecognized then the show wouldnt be pulled off. Just as important is the music. Thats where music director Dylan Timmins steps in. A fourth-year music theory and composition major, Timmins jumped at the chance to experiment with music arrangements and hear them come to life. He says the show has a wide variety of music genresfrom samba, to rock and roll, to Irish dancingbut all with a distinctly Legally Blonde feel. He also says despite what you may think, theres a lot of integrity to the show. When I started doing this show, I was hesitant, actually, because its Legally Blonde. I thought it was kind of flighty and I thought maybe the music would be kind of crappy, he says. But the musics actually a lot of fun and the storys really nice too. As the seven-hour-long rehearsal drew to a close, the cast and crew still brimmed with energya testament to the shows liveliness. Between surprisingly funny lines, over-the-top dance routines and even a few heart-felt moments, the show promises to have something for everyone, blonde or brunette. As Callegaro puts it, Its Theatre Westerns biggest musical ever, so its definitely not something to miss. Catch Legally Blonde in the Mustang Lounge on March 12, 13 and 14 at 8 p.m. Advance tickets are $12 for students, and $15 at the door. Tickets are available at Infosource or the Grand Theatre box office.
bohydrates, as well as proteins, healthy fats and a variety of vitamins and minerals. Yungblut counters that there are many more benefits to a properly executed cleanse. It is a process, a commitmentyou may feel tired, may lack energy [and] have issues with your bowels, she says, but points out the benefits patients can expect if they stick it out. Once the [patient] comes to the other end of it, their energy is better, they sleep better, their eyes look clearer, their skin is better and healthier, their nails are stronger, their hormones
are betterif you help your liver detoxify and take that burden off, anything helping the liver is good for your system. If you are interested in trying out a cleanse, Yungblut is supportive of Renew and Flora products. Flora has a product called fluorescence and the studies [and] evidence on that particular product go back to the 1800s, Yungblut says. It was used for cancer treatment by nurses and doctors in the early 1900s because it was so amazing. It is just a blend of herbs in a liquid formthere [are] no pills involved and it is still used today still for
cancer treatment. Planning a detox is not an excuse to drink or eat heavily processed foods and beverages excessively, and assuming the cleanse will be your saviour. When it comes to consuming and interacting with chemicals and toxins on a daily basis, the most effective way, as Martin says, is to make smart choices. The best way to avoid build up [of toxins] is to choose whole foods with as little processing, preservatives and additives as possible, Martin advises.

The Bone Cage by Angie Abdou is a story of athletes and their relationships with their own bodies. The novel begins as two separate stories of an 85-kilo wrestler named Digger and a speed swimmer named Sadie. Both have the same goalOlympic success. As the separate plots come together, readers will fall deep into the lives and struggles of both characters. Digger and Sadie have very different mentalitiesDigger is determined, but is able to remove himself from training and enjoy other parts of life. Sadie is equally as determined, but nothing outside of the pool seems to matter to her. In the novel, Sadie trains in Calgary, but Abdou used the pool in Thames Hall at Western in her imagination when she wrote the book. After reading about the characters and learning about them individually, readers will be turning pages with frantic excitement, eager for Digger and Sadie to meet. In an interview with Abdou, she comments on why the two characters were initially kept apart. I didnt want it to be mistaken as a romance, she explains. In 233 pages, The Bone Cage will reignite the readers love of fiction. Abdou remembers fantastic literature professors at Western, namely Balachandra Rajan and John Leonard, who influenced her love for a great book. There is a lot to be learned from this story of mind-body relationships. Digger and Sadie have one last shot at their biggest goals when they start thinking about what is left in life after sport. Skrillex ft. Ellie Goulding Summit There are varying opinions on the legitimacy of house musicthere are those who enjoy the head banging beats and there are those who think it sounds like two robots, well you know, making noise. But whether you are a dubstep aficionado or are only subject to the genre during a night out at Jacks, there is no denying the DJ era is still in full swing, and Skrillex winner of three 2012 Grammy awardsis one of the leading DJs on the scene. Summita single off the extended play Bangarangtranscends the eardrum-popping stereotype and instead provides a soft, easy listening rhythm. The soothing background vocals from
British artist Ellie Goulding, with the touch of electronic sounds, create a dynamic listening experience thats sure to change your mind about house music. Kaitlyn McGrath Meat Loaf Paradise By Dashboard Light Written by Jim Steinman, Meat Loafs Paradise by the Dashboard Light from Bat Out of Hell is a hilarious satire of the notions of youth and commitment that builds to a gut-ripping punchline at the close of the song. With a perfect mix of instruments and harmonies, Meat Loafs Paradise by the Dashboard Light will be listened to until the end of time. Brent Holmes

The End of That, the most recent album by Montreal-based group Plants and Animals was recorded in Paris with the help of French musicians. The album is quaint and entertaining, inherently Canadian, and easy to listen to. Honest lyrics are simultaneously open and subtle, mellow and sometimes aimless acoustic pieces create a warm homey feeling, and staticky electric guitar buzzes out distorted, bluesy minimalist melodies that cause earworms and drive the songs. The music is light, airy and carefree, full of major chords and empty of heaviness and bass grooves. Without a bassist, the band improvisessometimes members play bass, sometimes session musicians joinbut the lack of an organic bandmate and one-of-thefamily bassist is noticeable and leaves many of the songs feeling hollow and in treble. To conceal this rhythmic ellipsis, the band delves into dynamic contrast and sound-collage, changing volumes and layering instruments to generate a unique and fuller sound. Compelled by a Canadian spirit, moments of brilliance are balanced with a characteristically yet this time not unappealing indie blandness. The End of That is worth a listen. Nathan Tebokkel

renee tamming gazette staff Going into Sunday night, both the Western Mustangs and the Windsor Lancers knew it was a do-or-die game. The best-of-three series was tied at one, and this game was the determining factor as to which team would go on to the Ontario University Athletics championship. Both teams started out strong in the first period, with the play going back and forth between the Mustangs and Lancers zones. One great play by the Mustangs had Keaton Turkiewicz dropping the puck back to Kevin Baker at the blue line, who slapped the puck just wide of the Lancers net. Western goalie Josh Unice also found himself in trouble a couple of times in the first, such as when he was knocked over by traffic around the net. Luckily the Mustangs defencemen were on top of the situation, blocking shots by the Lancers and knocking the puck out of harms way. To be honest, I thought it was to my left, but I guess it was straight up in the air. It was a quick release and I didnt see it and I just got a blocker on it. Somebody said it hit me on the right side but I dove to the left and it shot off my ribs, but we battled and the guys worked through it, Unice explained. The second period was lighter, as both teams were losing the intensity they brought in the first. Though there were a couple of penalties and a few scoring opportunities, everything was coming up empty. However, it seems like that was always the Mustangs plan. We obviously wanted to play a very defensive game, because we knew it was going to be a lowscoring game, Clarke Singer, Mustangs head coach, said. And lowscoring it was, with only two goals being scored, both by the purple and white. Westerns first goal came early in the third period when a sharp pass by Steve Reese over the blue line found Zach Harnden, who netted his 20th goal of the year, and the third in the playoffs. Harnden knew that this goal was important, especially in a game this close. Before [the goal], we were heading into the third and we knew we had one period to win the game and we were going to play our hardest. After I scored, we were excited and hoping to hold the lead, Harnden said. The Mustangs second goal of the game came with only five minutes left in the third. Harnden skated up Lancers goalie Parker Van Buskirks right side and shot a quick pass over to Kevin Baker. Van Buskirk couldnt keep up, leaving a wide open net for Baker to tap the puck in. With a score of 2-0 as the final buzzer went, the Mustangs took to the ice to congratulate each other, but especially Unice, who stopped all 35 shots and who played well enough to earn himself the first star of the game. Josh was incredible. Hes been great in the playoffs for us and we needed him to be our best player tonight, and he was, Singer said. On the other side of the ice, Van Buskirk gave the Mustangs a run for their money, stopping 23 of the 25 shots that came his way. Hes played great this year, and its definitely a battle. Hes an exteammate of mine and I knew it was going to be a battle this series, so Im just extremely happy we came out on top, Unice said. But Unice cant reflect for too long the Mustangs still have another tough series in front of them before they can be OUA champions. [The McGill Redmen] are a great team. Theyre one of the top teams in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport, but so are we. We have to go out and play and do the little things right and play like we

did tonight, Unice commented on the Mustangs next opponent. But in big games such as these, nerves are always present. Any time you go out there, if you dont get nervous, then you
probably shouldnt be playing the game. I probably play the most pressure-packed position, but I like that. I like having the eyes on me, and sometimes its good and sometimes its bad, Unice said,
