APPMECH013 ENGINEERING MECHANICS INTCAL013, PHYSICS 124/121L None 3 units None

A course that covers the branch of engineering mechanics known as STATICS, which deals with the forces acting on non-moving bodies. This course is in preparation higher level of structural analyses of assemblies and structures like trusses, machine elements, robotic devices, etc. It covers concurrent and non-concurrent forces, operations with free-body concept, equilibrium of coplanar and non-coplanar force system, analysis of trusses, friction, forces in space, centroids, and moment of inertia 9. Course Objectives and Relationship to Program Educational Objectives: This course is a pre-requisite to Strength of Materials subject for Architectural students. The goals are to impart the theory of concurrent and non-concurrent forces in moving and nonmoving bodies and to provide the students with a solid foundation in mechanics. This prepare the student to a higher level of structural analyses and develop the students capability to engineering and complement their technical training with proficiency in oral communication and efficiency in written examination.

11. Course Outcomes and Relationship to Program Outcomes: A student completing this course should, at a minimum, be able to: 11. 1 differentiate vector from scalar quantities, and calculate resultants of concurrent and nonconcurrent forces. (a, e, g, k); 11.2 determine and apply conditions necessary to produce equilibrium of coplanar force systems. (a, e, g, k); 11.3 calculate the forces acting in the bars and upon the pins and hinges of a determinate trusses and frames.(a, e, k); 11.4 analyze the free-body-diagrams of bodies with the application of frictional forces.(a, e, g, j, k); 11.5 calculate the forces acting in a three dimensional space.(a, e, k); 11.6 locate the center of gravity of lines, areas, and solids.((a, e, k) and 11.7 solve the moment of inertia of composite areas and bodies.(a, e, k). 12. Homework, journal writing and other assigned coursework are due at the beginning of the class period of the specified date. Late assignments are worth 50% credit after due date. 14.3 Honor, Dress and Grooming Codes All of us have been instructed on the Dress and Grooming Codes of the Institute. We have all committed to obey and sustain these codes. It will be expected in this class that each of us will honor the commitments that we have made. For this course the Honor Code is that there will be no plagiarizing on written work and no cheating on exams. If a student is caught cheating on an exam, he or she will be given zero mark for the exam. If a student is caught cheating on two exams, the student will be referred to the Prefect of Student Affairs and be given a failing grade. 14.4 Consultation Schedule Consultation schedules with the Professor are posted outside the Mathematics Faculty Room. It is recommended that the student first set an appointment to confirm the instructors availability if outside the consultation schedules. 15. Other References: Merriam J.L.; Kraige L.G.
