FASCINATING COLLECTION OF VINTAGE VEHICLES ON CHORLEYS STAND AT THE GLOUCESTERSHIRE MOTOR SHOW
9th 10th June 2012 A collection of fascinating vintage vehicles from the Estate of the late Mr Melville Watts OBE JP of Lydney will be exhibited on Chorleys stand at the Gloucestershire Motor Show 2012 held at Highnam Court, Gloucester GL2 8DP over the weekend of 9th 10th June. Motor-powered and peddle-powered vintage machines from the late 19th and early 20th centuries will be sure to attract attention at this prestigious summer event. Two unusual 1920s motorcycles lead the two-wheeled section of the Melville Watts collection, both in their original unrestored condition. The 1922 New Imperial 350cc and the 1926 BSA 250cc, both registered in Gloucestershire, have plates DD 1137 and DF 459. Nonmotorised exhibits in this section are a Singer Ordinary penny farthing dating from around 1880 with a 50-inch wheel and two other penny farthings. Although it was quite common to see these being ridden in the streets of Victorian and Edwardian England, it is rare to see one these days, let along three! A far rarer pedal-powered tricycle, c. 1890, will also be on the stand driven by twin drive chains to each wheel, the steering is of rack and pinion type operated through a small wheel to the riders right hand with a brake to the left. This tricycle could well have been built by Quadrant of Birmingham, one of the first British companies to manufacture motorcycles. There will be many examples of cars by Rolls Royce at the Show including Mr Wattss 1965 Silver Cloud, which will certainly not be the odd one out with its much cherished plate ODD 11. Some 24 years its senior, built in 1921, the canary yellow Overland Tourer from America will also be displayed - converted to right-hand drive, it was often

seen in and around Lydney at the many ftes and country shows Mr Watts attended. In the midst of these wonderful exhibits on the stand will be a gem to fire up the passions of everyone attending the Show, the 1939 Leyland Cub fire engine. In 1965 it was advertised for sale by tender in The South Wales Argus newspaper and Mr Watts sent in the winning bid and collected it from Newport Fire Station in July 1965. The fire engine was often seen at childrens birthday parties and Simon, Melville Watts son, has many happy memories of such events. As well as vehicles from the Watts Collection, visitors to Chorleys stand at the Gloucestershire Motor Show will be able to view some of the other entries in their forthcoming Vintage and Classic Transport sale on Saturday 18th August 2012. This will be the perfect opportunity both to register interest in a possible purchase and for those wishing to discuss consigning vehicles of their own for sale. The Gloucestershire Motor Show attracts around 6,000 visitors over the weekend. As well as looking at all the news cars on display from the various dealerships in the area, visitors can experience so much more. There is nonstop entertainment all day ranging from bands, choirs, belly dancers and even the circus. In the main field visitors can shop in the Food and Drink marquees (with live cooking demonstrations) as well as Fashion and Beauty (with a live fashion show) as well as general stands selling everything from greetings cards to garden equipment.
