CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION

A. SITUATION ANALYSIS B. THEORITICAL FRAMEWORK

C. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM This study will be focused on the laboratory skills of science teachers as basis of coming out with seminar workshop which will improve instruction in the division of La Union. Specifically, this study sought to answer the following questions: 1. What is the profile of the public high school in La Union as to: 1.1 Teacher Profile: Sex, Civil Status, Age, Specialization, Length of service, Educational Attainment, Seminars/Trainings attended. 2. To what extent of the skill in the following skills on the following subjects: a. Earth Science b. Biology c. Chemistry d. Physics 3. What is the degree of needs of teachers to master the following laboratory skills? 4. Based on the result of the needs assessment, what laboratory skills need to master? IMPORTANCE OF THE STUDY The conduct of the study is very important and timely. The researcher believes that the result of the study will benefit the following: Researchers. The data which will be gathered may provide them with a rich knowledge in the field of Science education. It is being hope that the results of this study could contribute to literature which might serve as valuable resource material for further researches in the field of science education. Science Teachers. The result of the study would serve as an evaluation on the Laboratory skills of the teachers which will be used in coming up with seminar workshop which improve their instruction. Science Administration. Results of the research would serve as an eye opener through what extent of laboratory skills of teachers which needed help in coming out with seminar workshop. Curriculum Planners. The result may guide them as to what planning be done in the seminar workshop. Chapter 2 REVIEW OF LITERATURE

Chapter 3 METHODOLOGY This Chapter presents the research design, the population and sample, the instruments which will be used in gathering the needed data and the statistical tools to be used in treating the data to be gathered.

Research Design This study will be using descriptive design to gather information concerning the profiles of the teacher-respondents and school; degree/extent of laboratory skills. According to Zulueta and Costales (2003), descriptive research is the study that focuses the present condition on characteristics of the norms under study in a given period of time. Population and Sample For the needs assessment, a total of teachers in the second district of La Union. Data Gathering Procedure The study will be using three main procedures: needs assessment, degree/extent of laboratory skills, and degree/extent of need on the use of the laboratory apparatuses in the different subject areas in science. Needs Assessment The researcher will be utilizing the questionnaire to determine the degree/extent of teachers on their laboratory skills in the four areas of science and degree/extent of needs on the use of the following laboratory apparatuses. The results to be gathered will serve as basis in determining which laboratories skills need to be develop/improved and the much needed laboratory apparatuses in conducting laboratory activities. Treatment of Data The researcher will be using the following statistical tools to answer the problems: frequency count, percentage, weighted mean. The personal and professional profiles of the respondents will be determined using frequency count and percentage. The extent/degree of laboratory skills of the science teachers and the degree/extent of needs of The different laboratory apparatuses in using in conducting laboratory activities will be measured using a five point rating scale and weighted mean.
