THE ORDER OF VESPERS FOR THE WEEK OF THE SECOND SUNDAY IN LENT

THE WEEK OF THE SECOND SUNDAY IN LENT

PRAYER UNPON ENTERING THE CHURCH
Gracious God and Lord, You have said, Seek My face. As You sought me through the Gospel and by it made me Your child and heir, so too by that same Gospels power I seek You and Your grace and mercy. Do not turn Your face from me so that I will not be God-forsaken. Grant that Your face shines upon me so that I know the blessing of Your forgiveness and live in the hope of eternal life. This gift comes through Your Son, my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. In His name I pray. Amen Lighting of the Chancel Candles Prelude Ringing of the Church Bell Hymn: O Christ, You Walked the Road

WELCOME
As our Lords Passion neared, Jesus went to Gethsemane to pray. There Jesus said to His disciples Peter, James and John, whom He found sleeping, Could you not watch with me one hour? Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing but the flesh is weak. (Matthew 26:41) It is indeed good for you to be here this evening for this time of Vespers as we gather around Gods Word to be strengthened in our faith through the forgiveness of our sins and thereby given resolve to live as Gods people through the trials and temptations of life. If you are visiting we would especially like to welcome you and encourage you to come and worship with us again. If you have any questions about Grace Lutheran Church we invite you to visit with our Pastor. If you are in need of restroom facilities they are located downstairs in this building or across the bridge on this floor level before entering the Fellowship Hall. A nursery for infants and toddlers is located downstairs for those who have need. If you have any questions please speak with an Usher or Greeter.

AS WE GATHER
The third word of the cross is an entirely different word. It is a word directed to the Father, a cry of abandonment in the God-forsakenness of our sin. My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me? spoken in Jesus native tongue, Aramaic. This emanates from the very depths of His soul while showing His knowledge of the Psalms. Because Jesus suffered the wrath of His Father, we need not fear that our heavenly Father will abandon us, so we continually seek His face through Word and Sacrament and rejoice in His forgiveness which leads to everlasting life in His glorious presence.

P All the paths of the LORD are steadfast love and faithfulness, C for those who keep his covenant and his testimonies. P For your names sake, O LORD, C pardon my guilt, for it is great. P Who is the man who fears the LORD? C Him will he instruct in the way that he should choose. P His soul shall abide in well-being, C and his offspring shall inherit the land. P The friendship of the LORD is for those who fear him, C and he makes known to them his covenant. P My eyes are ever toward the LORD, C for he will pluck my feet out of the net.

Psalmody
Psalm
P To you, O LORD, I lift up my soul. O my God, in you I trust; C let me not be put to shame; let not my enemies exult over me. P Indeed, none who wait for you shall be put to shame; C they shall be ashamed who are wantonly treacherous. P Make me to know your ways, O LORD; C teach me your paths. P Lead me in your truth and teach me, C for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all the day long. P Remember your mercy, O LORD, and your steadfast love, C for they have been from of old. P Remember not the sins of my youth or my transgressions; C according to your steadfast love remember me, for the sake of your goodness, O LORD! P Good and upright is the LORD; C therefore he instructs sinners in the way. P He leads the humble in what is right, C and teaches the humble his way.
Psalm 25:122

P Turn to me and be gracious to me, C for I am lonely and afflicted. P The troubles of my heart are enlarged; C bring me out of my distresses. P Consider my affliction and my trouble, C and forgive all my sins. P Consider how many are my foes, C and with what violent hatred they hate me. P Oh, guard my soul, and deliver me! C Let me not be put to shame, for I take refuge in you. P May integrity and uprightness preserve me, C for I wait for you. P Redeem Israel, O God, C out of all his troubles. C Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen

Readings
Old Testament Reading
Listen to me, O Jacob, and Israel, whom I called! I am he; I am the first, and I am the last. My hand laid the foundation of the earth, and my right hand spread out the heavens; when I call to them, they stand forth together. Assemble, all of you, and listen! who among them has declared these things? The LORD loves him; he shall perform his purpose on Babylon, and his arm shall be against the Chaldeans. I, even I, have spoken and called him; I have brought him, and he will prosper in his way. Draw near to me, hear this: from the beginning I have not spoken in secret, from the time it came to be I have been there. And now the Lord GOD has sent me, and his Spirit. Thus says the LORD, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: I am the LORD your God, who teaches you to profit, who leads you in the way you should go. Oh that you had paid attention to my commandments! Then your peace would have been like a river, and your righteousness like the waves of the sea; your offspring would have been like the sand, and your descendants like its grains; their name would never be cut off or destroyed from before me. Go out from Babylon, flee from Chaldea, declare this with a shout of joy, proclaim it, send it out to the end of the earth; say, The LORD has redeemed his servant Jacob! They did not thirst when he led them through the deserts; he made water flow for them from the rock; he split the rock and the water gushed out. P C This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
Isaiah 48:1221

Catechesis
P What is the Office of the Keys? C The Office of the Keys is that special authority which Christ has given to His Church on earth to forgive the sins of repentant sinners, but to withhold forgiveness from the unrepentant as long as they do not repent. P Where is this written? C This is what St. John the Evangelist writes in chapter twenty: The Lord Jesus breathed on His disciples and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven." (John 20:2223) P What do you believe according to these words? C I believe that when the called ministers of Christ deal with us by His divine command, in particular when they exclude openly unrepentant sinners from the Christian congregation and absolve those who repent of their sins and want to do better, this is just as valid and certain, even in heaven, as if Christ our dear Lord dealt with us Himself.

Collect of the Day

P Let us pray. O God, You see that of ourselves we have no strength. By Your mighty power defend us from all adversities that may happen to the body and from all evil thoughts that may assault and hurt the soul; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Lord's Prayer
P Taught by our Lord and trusting His promises, we are bold to pray: C Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen

Matthew 6:913

Prayer of the Church

P Let us pray for the whole Church of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs.

Each petition ends with the following: P C Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

The prayers conclude with the following: P C Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in Your mercy; through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen

P Direct us, O Lord, in all our doings with Your most gracious favor, and further us with Your continual help that in all our works begun, continued, and ended in You we may glorify Your holy name and finally by Your mercy obtain eternal salvation; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
