Note from Festival Curators

Four years into curating and organizing Baajaa Gaajaa hasnt made the associated joy or anguish any the less. We still spend days and nights obsessing about the festival, making anxious calls to our marketing team waiting for good news on the sponsorships, and frantically tying loose ends only to find that some got away despite our best efforts at being watchful. Before we know it, we are hurtling past team meetings, and press conferences and phone calls and emails, and landing with a thump in the fantastic wonderland of Indian music. When the music begins, the agony is forgotten, at least temporarily, and we join music lovers at the festival in celebrating the magic and mystery that music brings to our lives. In its fourth year, the festival will have the distinction of being inaugurated by acclaimed poet Javed Akhtar, who has fearlessly championed the cause of artistes rights through a proposed amendment of the Copyright Act. This year we have also decided to give the Baajaa Gaajaa Music Festival a companion event in the form of the Baajaa Gaajaa Music Conclave. The music festival features over 40 performances presented by over 100 artistes, while the conclave creates a space for discussion and interaction with experts and leaders from various disciplines. Design and fashion icon Sabyasachi will transform the amphitheater at Ishanya for the concluding performance titled Dhamaal: A Celebration of Drumming and Percussion Styles. As in each preceding year of Baajaa Gaajaa, we feel a sense of thrill and excitement, as we send in this note for inclusion in the festival brochure. And yet, the stress and anxiety that we undergo each year in putting together Baajaa Gaajaa does not diminish in the least. As we do our best each year to curate a festival that truly showcases diversity, patronage for the arts continues to diminish dismally, pushing us closer each year to the brink of taking the heartbreaking decision of discontinuing the festival for lack of adequate funding. Shubha Mudgal and Aneesh Pradhan (Festival Directors and Curators)

Consulting Editor to Time Out If you were to flip through the dial of your FM radio in any Indian city, you could be forgiven for believing that the subcontinent had bowed the diktats of a fascist ruler and dispensed with all its diverse songs to dance to a single sound: the hegemonic tunes of Bollywood. Thankfully, real life is different, as Baajaa Gaajaa demonstrates so conclusively. With Adivasi music from Gujarat to blues from Shillong, from Manipuri music to thumri, Baajaa Gaajaa is a celebration of what it means to be Indian -- to make joyful noises in many rhythms, languages and genres. Congratulations to Shubha Mudgal and Aneesh Pradhan for pulling this together so lovingly.

February 11, 2012 More Stories in a Song: A Musical Collage of Theatre, Literature and History English-Hindi - 120 mins After running to packed houses across the country, Stories in a Song that premiered in Baajaa Gaajaa last year returns in a new avatar. Well-known theatre director Sunil Shanbag in collaboration with Shubha Mudgal and Aneesh Pradhan, weaves a web of theatre, music and literature through episodes that capture the social milieu of professional musicians. Accounts of music making in India, and stories of the struggles and hardships faced by musicians both real and imaginary, lay the foundation for a collage of dramatized episodes that blend theatre, music and literature. Several forms of theatre in India make abundant use of music, but Stories in a Song takes the help of theatre to tell stories of musical forms such as kajri, thumri-dadra, khayal, remixes and more.
