AEC Power Control Ltd Uninterruptible power solution for GemsTV ensures power

supplies and saves electricity costs.

The 12 million subscribers to GemsTV's gemstone jewellery retail shopping channel

can now be assured of no breaks in transmission following the installation of a
power support system at the company's UK headquarters in Redditch.

Designed and supplied by integrated power protection company, AEC UK, the state-
of-the-art standby power system has been installed to ensure that GemsTV's two
studios will be able to continue transmitting 24/7 even during extended power
outages.

Comprising of a T2000 250kVA UPS and 450kVA 3-phase diesel standby generator, the
power support system ensures clean and consistent electric power demanded by
sensitive equipment and helps protect against power spikes and brownouts.

Should a power failure occur, the generator takes over before the batteries of the
UPS run out, smoothly transferring the network over as part of the standby power
system.

When mains power returns, the software will automatically switch back to
conventional power after it has ensured that the power will remain constant.

"With our two studios broadcasting through Sky, Virgin Cable, Freesat and Freeview
for 18 hours a day, quality power is vital", said Paul Freer, Head of Engineering
at GemsTV.

"We had been experiencing problems from thunderstorms which had caused power
surges and blackouts and damaged equipment".

"We approached a number of companies regarding standby power systems but AEC UK
was the most professional and offered the most cost effective solution." Following
the successful installation of the standby power system, GemsTV approached AEC UK
about the financial penalties it was receiving through exceeding its input rating.

As the shopping channel is on air 24 hours a day, it uses large amounts of

electricity, which puts a constant pressure on the local electricity network and
as a result the company was receiving a Reactive Power charge from its electrical
utility company for not demonstrating clear energy efficiency use.

Not wishing to undertake a total upgrade to its power network, which would have
involved the cost of installing an onsite sub-station, GemsTV looked to AEC UK to
help them deliver the electricity required.

With the installation of AEC UK's power factor correction equipment, the supply
current required was considerably reduced which in turn means that the power
needed to operate the studios has been cut by approximately 25%.

"AEC UK has provided us with a 'one-stop-shop' for all our power support
requirements", concluded Paul Freer.

"The company is also maintaining all the equipment through a five-year maintenance
agreement".

"We are delighted with the technical expertise, professional support and service
supplied by AEC UK".
