Patrick Callan conTribuTor When Marie Louise Nielsen was deciding where to study abroad, Canada was at the top of her list. Having a Canadian university on your resum is highly regarded by employers, and can lead to more job opportunities, according to the Denmark native. Canada has a reputation of being more socially aware, and the education system is critical. I like how Canadians want to set themselves aside from Americans, Nielsen, a graduate student in media studies, said. Canadians are relaxed and laid back too. I like the humour here. The 27-year-old has taken a liking to Canadian culture and the higher education system. And she is not the only one. Across the country, numbers are up for international students studying higher education at Canadian universities, according to a Statistics Canada study that looked at the five-year period from 200711. International students often pay double the tuition fees of domestic students, but that does not translate into extra revenue for the school, said Kurtis Gray, manager of international undergraduate recruitment at Western. Domestic students receive subsidies from the federal and provincial governments that pay close to half their tuition, whereas international studies pay in full. Ontario and British Columbia topped the list as the provinces that gained the most international students over the last five yearswith 30,000 and 15,000, respectively but a smaller province on the East Coast made substantial gains. Nova Scotia welcomed more than 8,500 international students in higher education in 2011an increase of more than 3,000 students from 2007. And overall, student enrolment in the Maritime provinces is on the rise. At Dalhousie University in Halifax, the student population is 17,000, and more than 10 per cent are international students. Since 2007, enrolment of international students has nearly doubled, according to Pam Williams, manager of the International Centre at Dalhousie. Williams explained recent recruiting campaigns have been successful, but thats not the only reason international students are heading east. Most international students choose the country first, then they decide on location, then they narrow it down to the university, especially undergraduates, Williams said. Security issues surround methadone clinics

megan devlin GazeTTe sTaff City council has continued to flipflop on the opening of new methadone clinics. The latest issue in the ongoing saga is the drafting of a security plan for the new methadone clinics. While the decision has been pushed back until June, it has still sparked some dialogue about the perception and realities of security risks surrounding methadone clinics. Orest Katolyk, head of city bylaw enforcement, explained the main public safety concern surrounding new methadone clinics was drug traffickers gathering outside the clinics. Drug traffickers see this as a vulnerable part of society and use temptation tactics to sell illegal drugs to [methadone clinic users], Katolyk said. Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design is one strategy that Katolyk hopes will put the public at ease. CPTED focuses on designing buildings as a crime prevention initiative. Youre looking at things like natural surveillance, natural access control, territorial reinforcement and property maintenance. When you apply all these principles into the design of a building, you actually apply a form of security for the public, Katolyk said. This strategy has been adopted after council backed off plans to require new methadone clinics to have security cameras and guards. Denise Brown, Ward 11 councillor, explained security must be balanced against the rights of patients. How can you not catch crime if youre being videotaped? she said. But if [videotaping] is going to cause human rights issues, then we really have to be careful. Katolyk also said the ideas of security guards and cameras were not well received by the public. done clinics that this was an invasion of their dignity and privacy. Martyn Judson, medical director of clinic 528, explained video cameras violate the privacy of clinic patients by identifying who comes in. Currently, the clinic only has security cameras monitoring the parking lot for things like vehicle damage or late-night scuffles. He was also against security guards in clinics. We certainly dont need security guards, because that conveys the impression that theres the potential for violence in a methadone clinic. Thats going to deter people from coming in for treatment, Judson said. Judson said that CPTED might be an effective measure to prevent drug trafficking around the clinic. He explained drug traffickers do not gather outside the clinic proper, but they do tend to congregate outside the coffee shop down the street. We try to keep the traffic mov-

ing, we ask patients not to stand outside, to move. But when theres a place that theyre naturally encouraged to congregate, namely the coffee shop down the corner, you can see it makes our life very difficult, Judson said. Ive worked in methadone clinics for 20 years and Ive not had any problems, Judson continued. Its all the optics. Its all the stories that you hear, this business about the bylaws trying to regulate clinics. Its all based on fear, misinformation, ignorance, bias, prejudice. Brown also talked about the nature of the safety concerns. She said she was impressed when she visited two of the methadone-dispensing pharmacies in the city. The city has obviously invested money in trying to enforce these bylaws to restrict the location of clinics, but it would be much better if that money had been invested in educating people.

The union is seeking compensations for Air Canada workers who gave up pay and concessions to help the airline restructure when it filed for bankruptcy protection in 2003 and 2004. Trbovich outlined the unions key requests for the contract revision as offering Air Canada workers fair wage, and returning their pension back to where it was so the airline workers can receive recognition and compensation for their labour. While a strike would cause a major inconvenience to both Air Canada and those with travel plans for the holidays, Trbovich strongly felt this issue needs to be brought to a conclusion. Dont be so trusting the next time you give out your credit card informationit could be used for fraudulent purposes. Six people in London have been charged for five different criminal acts, including the possession of a file with 3,000 stolen credit card numbers, names, addresses and email accounts. The six individuals, ranging from ages 18 to 41, were arrested on February 17 after investigators searched a home on Huron Street. We were alerted to them, and it was a result of our investigators digging into some information that they received, Dennis Rivest, media relations officer for the London Police Service, said. The investigation led them to gather enough information that they were able to locate these individuals and the scheme that they were working on, he explained. Theres a number of charges that they are facing, Rivest said. The six accused are being charged for possession of drugs, possession of credit cards obtained by crime and stolen possessions. This credit card fraud has been a month-long investigation and is still ongoing. There [are] over 3,000 credit card numbers that they had. Now those 3,000 card numbers are worldwide. So you can appreciate theres a lengthy investigation that needs to be completed, and our investigators are continually working on that, Rivest said. Hillete Warner

Engineering jobs on the rise

Cameron Smith GazeTTe sTaff Engineers have never had it easy in school, but applying to jobs after graduation might be easier than ever for them. According to an article in the Toronto Star, engineers are retiring at a rate higher than new ones are graduating, leaving a deficit in the workforce. According to Andrew Hrymak, dean of the engineering faculty at Western, the deficit might be more obvious in certain engineering sectors than others. I dont think there is a huge, huge deficit, but engineering is an in to many different job opportunities, he explained. What my experience has led me to believe is that [the job deficits] are primarily regional and sectorial, Hrymak continued. Definitely, there is a need for more engineers around electrical energy, power generation, power transmission, et cetera. Certain job sectors that require engineers are booming, a primary example being the energy sector. The demand for new and renewable energy sources has provided a booming industry and a need for new engineers. For those that work in the energy sector, right now there are lots of growth opportunities, Hrymak said. Yes, there is stronger interest in engineering, but its a question of what kind of engineering jobs people are willing to pursue. Though currently there are not enough graduates to fill jobs in particular engineering sectors, that may change as more students take engineering to capitalize on the vital job market. Were already seeing this in the application numbers, theyre very strong this year in engineering across Ontario, Hrymak explained. Were seeing increased interest by high school students in engineering as a career path. These sentiments were reaffirmed by Mike Zawalsky, president-elect for the Undergraduate Engineering Society. I definitely think the availability is a draw for students, but you also get a large number of students who are just fascinated by the world, and want to change it, he said. It depends on what sectors of the economy youre interested and what your geographic location is relative to them. Despite the openings in many engineering sectors, applying for jobs outside of university still proves to be a daunting task. Its very similar to a job search anywhere elsethere is still that intimidation factor for many, Zawalsky concluded. For some engineering students, this means that they dont have to worry so much about applications, and gaining outside job experience. Ive done no preparation, Tim Whelan, a third-year student in electrical engineering, explained. Im in electrical engineering that opens up jobs in telecommunications, medical devices, power generation and delivery, and Im sure other things. Im planning on staying in academics for a while, too. So applying to jobs outside of that is not something Ive given too much thought to.

New health and wellness coordinator position

Cheryl Stone neWs feaTures ediTor The University Students Council is tying together all of its awareness campaigns under one banner. The future position of the health and wellness coordinator will oversee health and safety-based awareness campaigns that the USC runs. Additionally, the coordinator will oversee the peer support line, along with promoting many other USC services. Students are looking at the USC to do more to fill the gaps in education and services on this campus, and we believe this service is the solution to the issues students have raised to us, Marissa Joffre, vice-president campus issues for the USC, explained. Alex Lu, accessibility commissioner, expressed some concerns over how the service will deal with mental health issues. He explained that currently, mental health concerns are viewed as medical issues that can be solved. This viewpoint, he explained, contributes to the stigma surrounding mental health and disability issues, as it maintains the attitude these students can simply get better. There are definitely ways we can work to make the service more accessible to those with mental health disabilities, and less alienating and discriminatory for those who prefer to view their disability in a more social light, Lu explained, noting he wanted to work with them in the future. Specifically, the new position will have a budget of $8,000 to be used for training those who work on the peer support line, advertising support groups and services, and continuing awareness weeks. I felt that since students were adamantly requesting more programming and services surrounding health issues, an increase in funding typically allotted was appropriate. Joffre noted the change from several commissioners to a coordinator and service would give these initiatives an executive team to work with and more attention from the USC than in the past. The main areas include sexual health, campus safety, alcohol and substance abuse, mental health and peer-support, and healthy lifestyles. Lu said the change would be welcomed. As a commissioner myself, I know that commissioners can really struggle to get enough funding, publicity and political weight to carry out our roles.

The Internet has been bursting at the seams the past two days with people sharing one particular video about Joseph Kony, an internationally despised figure in Uganda who has been plucking thousands of children from their homes and transforming them into warriors and sex slaves. The video has infected social media outlets, spreading through wall posts and tweets at an unprecedented rate. It calls for action this year, and people seem to be mobilized by its message. There are two sides to every story, however. Despite how hard the video may have tugged at your heartstrings, there are some criticisms about the charity behind the video, Invisible Children, and the movement in general. The first question is, why now? This has been a problem for a very long time. In fact, the footage for this film is several years old. According to some sources, Joseph Kony has already lost most of his power, and has been battled back out of Uganda. The video has basically mobilized people through misrepresentation. A lot of people are suddenly passionate about the suffering of other humans, and are now aware of the extent that some Africans suffer. But what is posting a video to your Facebook going to do? If a person truly wanted to help, they should be lobbying their governmentwho have real powerto take action. Even then, this issue is complex to a painful degree, and problems like this cannot be solved by throwing money at them. And even if we could agree that our priority should be sending in troops to take this guy downwhich has actually already been done, to some degree, for those who have only watched the videokilling his child soldiers in the process is likely going to be frowned upon by the international community. We would all like to combat evil, and we would all like to see a world in which child soldiers, sex slaves and bloodshed do not exist. But we want to see something done about it beyond a viral video. If were being optimistic, maybe this video will give birth to a generation of passionate activists. But using misleading information to get people to act in a way that will ultimately be detrimental is obviously wrong. Millions of people now know that Uganda isnt perfect. Now, millions of people should be doing further research and deciding on the most appropriate and effective response to their newfound knowledge. The Gazette Editorial Board

Chris Brown not a comeback story

maddie Leznoff depuTy ediTor Rumours are flying out of Hollywood that R&B pop sensation Rihanna is getting back together with her former boyfriendand abusersinger Chris Brown. In 2009, Brown beat Rihanna and left her unconscious in the passenger seat of a car, her face a swollen mess. He later pleaded guilty to assault charges and was sentenced to five years probation, 1,400 hours of community service and was given a restraining order. Rihanna is currently tight-lipped over the supposed reconciliation, and rightly so. If this relationship goes public, not only will she be setting a horrible example for her fans, but it will make her a hypocrite. After the incident, Rihanna went on many talk shows to raise awareness about domestic abuse. It would be extremely disappointing if Rihanna does get back together with Brown, but thats not my main concern. If she wants to make that decision, its an unfortunate message shes sending to the public, but its her life. My question is, how was Chris Brown able to continue his rise to fame after such an incident? It seems, in Hollywood, talent trumps any misdeedits the ultimate redeeming quality. The industry tells us that, yes, its bad Chris Brown beat his girlfriend, but that doesnt mean we should ignore his awesome singing ability and dance moves. But thats exactly what we should doif no one buys his records or goes to his concerts, we send the message that its not okay to treat others terribly, and being talented doesnt grant you clemency. Of course, there are tons of people who agree with me and dont want him to succeed. But there are others who buy his albums, attend his concerts, and tweet things like Id let Chris Brown beat me any day during his performance at the Grammys. These people are not only infuriating, but they have bought into Browns comeback story, which has been perfectly orchestrated by his publicity team. Were obsessed with celebrity failure and success. Theres something appealing about witnessing a comebackits why we read gossip blogs to see if Lindsay Lohans out of rehab, and tuned into Saturday Night Live when she hosted last weekend. Somehow, Browns career has assumed this redemption narrative. However, his story is not a justifiable comeback. Its one thing to struggle with drugs and return to television, but its another to beat your girlfriend and win a Grammy three years later. Its not just his return that upsets meits what were made to believe hes come back from. The Rihanna incident isnt being treated as something he did, but rather construed as some terrible incident that involved him. His comeback is solely based on winning back the public with talent, almost in spite of his pastwere told his talent is too great to ignore. I believe people can change, but he hasnt showed hes worked to overcome his aggression. In fact, Brown is notorious for brushing aside questions about the incident in interviews. Maybe having your name back on the top 40 charts qualifies as a comeback for some people, but I dont believe hes changed or that hes not going abuse someone else. So lets take a moment to consider if Chris Brown merits a comeback, and hope that Rihanna has enough sense to do the same.

Caitlin Newnham conTribuTor Yesterday, the Spoke was filled with creativity, Red Bull and the smell of paint for the Visual Arts Supporters Associations BYOBBring Your Own Brushevent. For the first time, VASA provided students with the opportunity to paint in public. Red Bull was gracious enough to provide us with the free material and free refreshments all day, explains Amanda Oppedisano, president of VASA. As the name suggests, the students only had to bring their own brush. I knew VASA was a big supporter of the arts, so I shot them an email. We thought it would be a fun idea, so we teamed up, says Jeff Thorne, a student Red Bull representative. After the success BYOB had at the University of Guelph and Emily Carr University, the event seemed like the perfect way for VASA to further integrate visual arts into Western culture. We are always trying to create events for students to stay as involved as possible, whether they are an arts student, or just interested in the arts in general, says Oppedisano. Our goal this year has been to try and bring these types of events closer to the university core and to provide them most importantlyfor free. She also stresses that if students look, there are artistic opportunities. Students should know that there are resources available to them within not only the university community, but within the London arts community as well, and we want to be able to provide opportunities for themas best as we can. Ideally, wed love to have the artwork sold and donate the money to a charity such as the International Child Art Foundation, which funds these fantastic healing arts programs that provide children who are recovering from disasters with art materials as a means of therapy, says Oppedisano. The event allowed students from a variety of faculties, including history, science and visual arts to create beautiful pieces of art.

From unique chocolates, custom jewelry and spare parts, to tailored bone implants3-D printing can do it all. Last year, Dutch surgeons replaced an 83-year-olds entire lower jaw with a custom 3-D printed titanium copy, enabling her to chew, speak and breathe normally. Researchers are even developing machines that will print fully functional organs. But how does this all happen? 3-D printers print stacked slices of a digital object using hardening liquids or fine powders melted into a solid. First, an object is created in computer aided design software. Next, it is sliced into very fine layersup to 33 per millimetre for the jawto be successively printed. Complex parts that would

be costly and laboriousor even impossibleto produce conventionally can thus be easily and automatically printed overnight. At Western, University Machine Services provides 3-D printing services for as little as $40 per hour. Rapid prototyping specialist Ian Vinkenvleugel has seen the technology progress and notes it is now more accessible to small companies and hobbyists. More materials are available and the machines are getting smaller and more desktop-usable. Its also more plug and play now, he says, noting metal printing machines are becoming increasingly common. Aerospace industries are using the technology to produce detailed and lightweight components out of titaniuma metal traditionally difficult to shape. Artists have also embraced the revolution, using it to give form to new ideas and phenomena, like a moths erratic flight as it circles a

light. Complex fractal-like mathematical structures once confined to the land of theoretical possibility can now be made on a desktop machine. Vinkenvleugel encourages people to try 3-D printing. There are really dirt cheap tabletop units available that you can start as a hobbyist playing with this technology at home, he says. For less than the cost of a Macbook, anyone can 3-D print from their desktop. Printrbot, Rep Rap or MakerBot are affordable models, and designs can be uploaded to reputable printing sites like Shapeways or Ponoko. They offer an array of coloured plastics, metal and glass printing. Essential Dynamics model, available for a paltry $3,000, prints tasty creations using chocolate or cheese. Vinkenvleugel says it best. These machines will go as far as peoples imaginations.

Kaitlyn mcGrath opinions ediTor It took 33 years to get back to the Canadian Interuniversity Sport championships, and the Mustangs mens volleyball team wasnt going to waste this opportunity. The road to the championships wasnt exactly a smooth ride for the Mustangs considering the five-set loss to the Queens Gaels in the Ontario University Athletics championship match. The defeat marked the second consecutive year the Mustangs lost the final in front of the home crowd. We wanted to beat Queens and its a big rivalry, so losing in five sets stung for a couple days, Jim Sage, Mustangs head coach, said. Fortunately, Queens already had a slot in the championship due to hosting duties, so the Mustangs were headed to Kingston to compete at nationals, despite losing the provincial title. But then we thought we had a really good week of practice leading into CIS [championships], so I think they quickly got over it, and with the opportunity to play again, they started to refocus, Sage added. With their first opponent being the number two nationally ranked Manitoba Bisons, focus was going

Its not like we werent focused, it was just they kept on getting strong points off us, points we really should have had. The second set saw a turnaround from Western, who limited their unforced errors. After a backcourt kill from Garrett May, the team took the set by a score of 2725. In one of his biggest games during his short career here at Western, May rose to the occasion and lead the team with 26 kills. [He] probably had one of the best games Ive seen him play all year, if not ever. He really stepped it up and played a very aggressive style of game, and it paid dividends in terms of getting very difficult balls into the court and scoring against very big blocks, James said about his teammate. The following two sets were split, with the Bisons taking the third 25-17, and the Mustangs responding in the fourth with a 25-22 win to force a fifth set. After going up 3-0 in the fifth, the Mustangs looked like they might complete the upset, but Sage explained teams from the West are accustomed to hard-fought battles, and they were able to draw from experience in this instance. I remember looking at my assistant coach when it was 14-14 and we both had big smiles of our face saying, Isnt this fun? It was just top-calibre volleyball and the guys were giving it, Sage explained. The Mustangs pushed the Bisons to the edge of defeat, but in the end, Manitoba took the final set 19-17. We felt heartbroken at first, because obviously we were reeling from the few mistakes we made in that fifth set, James said after the loss. However, soon after we were happy with the way we played, and we were happy we brought such a seasoned and extremely skilled team to the brink of defeat. In the consolation semi-final against Calgary, the Mustangs had nothing left in the tank and were swept 3-0. Even though the year ended on a negative note, Sage is still pleased with the overall season. We didnt accomplish all of our goals, but we won our league, we had some good individual awards, we hosted final four and we had a shot to win the Ontario championshipwhich a lot of other teams didnt, he said.
