Hardwood Plywood Core Options

Most of our hardwood plywood inventory is Veneer, MDF or Particleboard construction. These are the most commonly used substrates. There are however alternative options available. Please contact your sales representative for pricing and availability. Veneer Core - Made up of wood veneer inner plies (usually Poplar), Veneer core is light in weight and offers good strength and stability. The drawback is that thickness variance can be +0 / -3/64; this is the HPVA industry standard specication. Veneer core remains the most popular option because of the all wood construction and light weight characteristics. Particleboard (PBC) - This is the least expensive of the core options. PBC offers a smooth, void-free surface for veneer lay-up. PBC provides tight thickness tolerances but is heavy; a 3/4 panel can weigh as much as 100lbs. PBC has the least amount of structural strength compared to other cores and is subject to the greatest amount of expansion if exposed to moisture. Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) - MDF offers great stability and is the least likely to react when subjected to a measurable change in environment. It offers a very smooth, void-free surface for veneer lay-up. MDF has greater strength and screw holding properties than PBC. Like PBC however, MDF is one of the heavier core options. This core is especially well suited for thin panel applications such as door inserts and paneling. Woodstalk - This composite core is manufactured from wheat-straw. There is no added formaldehyde in the raw materials or the resin used to bond the core. It offers a very smooth and void free surface. Columbia Forest Products uses a no added formaldehyde glue line to bond the veneers to the core. Woodstalk with veneer overlay is offered exclusively through Columbia Forest Products. Classic Core I - Constructed of veneer core inner plies with PBC crossbands. It offers similar strength and stability to veneer core but has the void-free surface quality of PBC. Excellent substrate for the thin sliced woods and even rotary woods, reducing the potential for core transfer. This core tends to offer more consistent tolerances than standard veneer core. Classic Core II - Similar to Classic Core I except the cross band is MDF rather than PBC. Columbia introduced this core in response to customers issues with the potential for chip out with Classic Core I. Jaycore - The two biggest issues end-uses have had with veneer core in recent years are thickness variation and core transfer. As a result, Columbia introduced a panel which addresses both of these challenges. Jaycore is a calibrated platform. The core is sent through a size sander before laminating the face and back veneers. With Jaycore, voids are repaired in crossbands. Jay-Classic IV - This is the Best of all possible cores. Originally engineered for a large OEM, this core has a thinner MDF crossband than Classic Core II, thus an overall increased volume of veneer inner plies. It also weighs less than other Classic Core options. When you examine the prole of this panel it is very difcult to see the composite line. The core comes with a 2-step sanded blank which offers tighter thickness tolerances than standard veneer cores. Jay-Classic IV is the best core offered in terms of strength, stability, surface quality and thickness tolerance.

Types of Veneer Cuts

The manner in which a log segment is cut with relation to the annual rings will determine the appearance of the veneer. The principal methods of slicing veneers are Rotary, Plain Slicing (or Flat Slicing), Quarter Slicing (or Quarter Cut), and Rift Slicing (or Rift Cut). Rotary The log is centered mounted on a lathe and peeled along the general path of the growth rings like unwinding a roll of paper, providing a generally bold random appearance. Rotary cut veneers may vary in width and matching at veneer joints is extremely difcult. The only way in which a whole piece face veneer can be cut.

Plain Sliced This slicing method is most often used to product veneers for high quality architectural woodworking. Slicing is done parallel to a line through the center of the log. A combination of cathedral and straight grain patterns results, with a natural progression of pattern.

T HEHA DW OOD GR R OUP V S TW W W . R II HA DW OODGR OUP C . OM F OR L A I OC T ONS

Quarter Slicing Quarter slicing simulates the quarter sawing process of solid lumber, roughly parallel to a radius line through the log segment. In many species the individual veneer segments are narrow as a result. A series of stripes is produced, varying in density and thickness from species to species. Flake is a characteristic of this method in Red and White Oak.

Matching Between Adjacent Veneer Segments

It is possible to achieve certain visual effects by the manner in which veneer pieces are arranged. Rotary Cut veneers are usually whole piece face, but if spliced, they are difcult to match. As a result, most matching is done with sliced veneers. The most common types of matching are Book, Slip, and Random. Book Matching The most commonly used match in the industry. Every other piece of veneer is turned over so adjacent pieces are opened like the pages of a book.

Rift Slicing Rift veneers are produced most often in Red and White Oak, rarely in other species. Note that rift veneers and rift sawn solid lumber are produced so differently that a match between the two is highly unlikely. In both cases the cutting is done slightly off the radius lines minimizing the ake associated with quarter slicing.

Slip Matching Often used with quarter slicing and rift sliced veneers. Adjoining pieces are placed (slipped out) in sequence without turning, resulting in all the same face sides being exposed.

Random Matching Veneer pieces are placed next to each other in a random order and orientation, producing a board-by-board effect in many species.

Veneer Selection
Select Veneer is composed entirely of heartwood or sapwood and is matched for grain, pattern and color. Uniform Veneer is also composed entirely of heartwood or sapwood, but is matched for color only. Natural Veneer is composed of both heartwood and sapwood and is generally less expensive than select or uniform veneers Paint Grade Veneer has a smooth enough nish so none of the wood grain characteristics show through the paint. Stain Grade Veneer is meant to take a clear or tinted stain and still show the natural characteristics of the wood.

Face Grade Applications

AA - The best quality face grade for high end use such as architectural paneling, doors, and cabinets, case goods and quality furniture. A - Where AA is not required but excellent appearance is very important as in cabinets and furniture. B - Where the natural characteristics and appearance of the species are desirable. C and D - Provide sound surfaces but allow unlimited color variation. Should be used in applications where the surface will be hidden or a more natural appearance is desired.

Nevamar Melamine
MelaFace thermal fused melamine panels from Nevamar are value-engineered to provide durability and cost-efciency, as well as distinctive design appeal. The panels are highly resistant to moisture, stain, soiling, scufng, and scratching. In manufacturing, panels are thermal fused under heat and pressure to permanently bond the super-saturated paper to the substrate. This eliminates delamination and provides a highly realistic, natural appearance. Nevamar melamine panels provide a wide range of cost-efcient designs for furniture, xture, and cabinet makers.
