The Active & Reactive Power block measures the active power P and reactive power Q associated with a periodic voltage-current pair that can contain harmonics. P and Q are calculated by averaging the V I product with a running average window over one cycle of the fundamental frequency, so that the powers are evaluated at fundamental frequency.

Re: What is meant by Active and reactive power? Answer Actually in the transmission # 12 line the powerflow takes 0 Kushal

place. the complete power in the transmission line is known as total power which is further divided in two parts i.e. 1.active power or real power or apparant power. 2.reactive power or unreal power. now their work in the transmission line what exactly they required for... 1.active power:it controls the frequency balance in the transmission line. 2.reactive power:it controls the voltage balance in the transmission line. what happens basically Total power is denoted by S = P + Q. where P=active power Q=reactive power. when the resistive power get mixed up with the inductive power it becomes active power & when resistive power mixed up with the capacitive power it becomes reactive power. thats why when the inductive load on the transmission line becomes more then we have to add capacitive reactance to compensate it & vice-versa...

and reative power is used for producing magnetic flux for rotating electrical machines.Explanation by simple example:if we want to go from Delhi to Mumbai by plane. If plane is flying at 3 kms height (vertical height) it is reactive power and horizontal distance(from Delhi to Mumbai)it is called active power or useful power.

which is not returned back to source. In case of inductors and capacitors , those are not power dissipated elements and they returned back the power

to source what ever amount they have while current is passing through those elements. This power is called reactive power.

What is the difference between active power and reactive power?

Answer:

Note that this is an engineering convention, not a concept from pure physics. When you multiply voltage by current, the total "power" in volt*amps can be a combination of two types of "power". 1. active power = V*I*cos(theta) and 2. reactive power = V*I*sin(theta) where (theta) is the phase angle between the voltage and current. A physicist would say that V*I*sin(theta) is NOT power since it is performing zero work.

What is meant by the active and reactive powers in electricity?

In: Electrical Engineering [Edit categories]
Answers.com > Wiki Answers > Categories > Technology > Engineering > Electrical Engineering > What is meant by the active and reactive powers in electricity?

Answer:

Improve

These terms describe the behaviour of energy in alternating-current circuits. Active power (also known as 'true power' or 'real power') describes the rate at which energy is permanently dissipated by the resistive component of a circuit or load. Active power is measured in watts.

Reactive power describes the rate at which energy is alternately stored in the magnetic or electric field and, then, returned to the source when the field collapses, during every quarter-cycle. Reactive power is measured in reactive volt amperes. Apparent power is the vector sum of a circuit's active and reactive power, and is measured in volt amperes. The apparent power of an a.c. load can be determined from the product of a voltmeter and an ammeter reading. The active power can be determined by using a wattmeter. The reactive power can then be determined by vector subtraction.
