Teaching Self-evaluation Pro-forma

The questions below will help you reflect on your teaching. There may be other questions you
feel are important. Add these to your list.
Complete the pro-forma after each and every lesson

What did I learn from teaching the lesson?

I learnt that I need to be more confident with students. I have to control my language and give clear instructions.
I need to specify the objectives of my lesson so that students know what they will learn and how that knowledge
will help them in their language acquisition.
I have to design my tasks in a clear way and make them as related to the topic as possible and make a clear flow
between them.
I have to provide more variety of teaching techniques and students’ work, e.g. more pair work and group work.

How appropriate were the objectives?

My objectives were focused on speaking, vocabulary and reading. They were appropriate to the students’ level,
however, I could have make them more useful, for instance, by teaching more vocabulary, instead of focusing on
everything and anything at the same time.

To what extent were they achieved?

I focused on speaking all the way through the lesson trying to ask as many questions to the students to provoke
discussions and encourage them to share opinions about popular topics like horoscopes and describing
characters.
Vocabulary objective was not fully achieved as I just mentioned that area and actually focused on students’
previous knowledge about describing personalities instead of teaching them some new words.
Reading was just concentrated on searching in the text words that describe characters. I should have asked more
questions about that article or put them into groups that share the same star sign to discuss it. I actually had that
planned in my lesson plan but, unfortunately, did not use it during the lesson.

What techniques went well or badly?

I think that eliciting went quite good. Students were encouraged to remind themselves words that describe
characters. That encouraged them to talk. Later on, introduction to the topic related to horoscopes and zodiac
signs and again eliciting encourage students to express their opinions and share ideas with the rest of the class.
Also, monitoring students and asking them questions went well. The lesson had a nice flow but the tasks should
have been more organised and related to each other.
I should have done more pair and group work. Furthermore, I could have introduce more vocabulary to students
instead of just giving them handouts and then let them practise it. I should avoid ambiguous questions and be
specific and clear.

Are there any aspects of the lesson that I would approach differently next time?
I would provoke students to ask questions and take more information from them instead of me talking and asking
all the time. I would prepare one main task and then few little ones related to the topic of the lesson so that I can
avoid overloading. I would approach my topic from the beginning to the end, for instance, as the vocabulary
task, I would elicit first to find out what students previous knowledge is, then introduce new vocabulary (new
input) and the let them practice is and ask questions if necessary. I would definitely follow my lesson plan as the
ideas that I plan beforehand are interesting and nicely organised but when it comes to the lesson all of that
disappears and it is never used.

What should I do before my next lesson?

I have to plan and prepare my lesson carefully so that it is as beneficial for the students’ learning as possible. I
have to prepare less tasks and make them related to each other to that students can notice a flow between them
and a unity of a topic that they are learning during the lesson. Tasks can’t be out of context.
I have to practice the task with my group trying to teach them first to find out how relevant and useful the
activities really are.
Prepare a detailed lesson plan and FOLLOW it during the lesson.

Any other comments?
I liked the variety of the materials I prepared, like handouts with vocabulary, pictures, photocopies that I
presented on the OHP and authentic materials, newspapers with up to date horoscope, so that students can relate
the lesson to the real life.
I found describing characters important as an introduction as students are very often in different situations asked
to say few words about themselves, like to describe their personality or suitability for a certain job on a job
interview.
