FROM THE PASTOR

ANNUAL RENEWAL - What sense does it make to baptize infants? Shouldnt such a momentous decision as belonging to a religion be left up to the individual? What about personal freedom? Because Grace is prior to and larger than our consciousness, our parents sink us into Christ as soon as possible so that Christ may begin to sink into us. Just as tee-ball is our baptism into baseball, just as our first job is our baptism into the world of work, so too our sacramental baptism is our initiation into living baptismally. In fact, the initiation phase of our Christian life is not complete until we confirm the baptismal promises that had been made for us by our parents and make the promises for ourselves in the Sacrament of Confirmation. The choice of ones religion is left up to each individual! But not only once! After we have completed our Christian initiation by making the baptismal promises our own at our Confirmation, we then are called to make them our own again each year on Easter Sunday. In this way, over time, at each stage of our lives, in freedom and with joy, we choose not only a religion but also to allow that religion to become more and more fully integrated into us and ourselves into God by way of the religion we are freely and freshly choosing to practice. RENEWAL INSTRUMENT, GLOBAL - This making our Baptismal Commitment more and more our own over time is so important that our Tradition has developed the Season of Lent to help us prepare for each Easters Renewal of Baptismal Promises. Each Lent our Church encourages us to allow Gods grace to re-form our lives by taking up a notch the normal penitential practices of prayer, fasting and works of charity by way of many worthy devotions and actions such as may be found on our parish website at Lent. RENEWAL INSTRUMENT, PAROCHIAL - As we join with other Catholics in preparing to renew our commitment to live baptismal lives this Easter, we in St. Anns work to make Lent more effective by conducting our annual Parish Renewal of Focus, Commitment and Methodology. Our Focus is (spatially) the Altar and (temporally) the one hour each week when we gather to celebrate the Most Blessed Sacrament on the Lords Day. Our Commitment is to live baptismally each day by rejecting Satan the Prince of Darkness and accepting Jesus the Light of the World. Our Method is the practice of the Stewardship Way of Life. SCRUTINIZING - This weekend we begin the RCIA process of The Scrutinies for our Catechumens, and throughout Lent we all ask the Lord to help us scrutinize our lives in the light of His Gospel. At the Winds of Change icon on our Parish Homepage you will find some aides to help us scrutinize our response to Gods grace with regard to how we are stewarding His gifts of Time, Talent and Tangibles. STEWARDSHIP EXAMEN - This week we turn our attention to how we are stewarding the Lords gift of our Tangible blessings. While many parishes employ the mantra Time, Talent and Treasure, I have resisted this because I want to remind myself and our members that our Treasure is Jesus. For this reason, we employ the somewhat awkward but more accurate mantra of stewarding Time, Talent and Tangibles. WELCOME! - This weekend we welcome Mary Ann Nagle who will speak at each of our Masses about the Catholic Charities Appeal and how we can incorporate this major Archdiocesan effort into our stewardship of tangibles for the next twelve months. FLOWERS DURING LENT? - While we normally do not have flowers in Chapel during Lent, we have them this weekend because we are celebrating the fourth Anniversary of our parishs Hispanic Ministry. Felicitaciones a Todos! PARISH MINISTRY FAIR - I hope you will join me in Griffin Hall next Sunday at some time between 8:30 AM and 1:00 PM for our annual Parish Ministry Fair, as we direct our communal attention to the many opportunities for stewarding our Talents over the next year.

CATHOLIC CHARITIES APPEAL - We are in the midst of the annual Archdiocesan Catholic Charities Appeal. More than usual, this year is a good time to let the Light who is Christ shine forth through our communal efforts on behalf of our neighbors in need so that people may see goodness in our acts and give praise to our heavenly Father (Matthew 5:16), and for this reason I have decided to increase my own donation to this years Appeal. I urge you to consider participating and please know that whatever you can give is both needed and appreciated. PRAY, FAST, CONNECT, HELP - This week Operation Rice Bowl invites us to come to know Maria Idalia Serrano from El Salvador. We encourage our members to practice ORB and to make use of the materials available in Chapel & Church and/or through www.catholicrelief.org. At the end of Lent, we ask you to convert your Rice Bowl donations into one check and place that check into the collection basket on Holy Thursday or on Easter Sunday. POOR BOXES - All funds received in our Parish Poor Boxes this Lent will be sent to The Clinic right here in Phoenixville. Two Good Questions Check out A Biblical Reflection at the Pastors Portion of our Parish Website regarding these two questions: 1. If we are now in the Year of St. Mark, how come the Gospels for today and the next two Sundays are from St. Johns Gospel? 2. Is the Gospel According to John antiSemitic?

TANGIBLES REFLECTION We encourage you to prayerfully reflect on whether the stewardship of your material goods increases your attachment to God or interferes with your relationship with Him. Where the Holy Spirit leads you in that reflection is a matter between you and God. The Tangibles portion of the Commitment Form indicates only that you have reflected on this issue and that you agree to help support our parish as you are able. The following table can help you examine your current percentage of giving and decide whether it is right for you or whether a change is suitable. The highlighted column lists income amounts both by week and year. The right section shows various percentages of that income by week and year.
Weekly Income $100 200 300 400 500 600 700 800 900 1,000 1,200 1,400 1,600 1,800 Annual Income 5,200 10,400 15,600 20,800 26,000 31,200 36,400 41,600 46,800 52,000 62,400 72,800 83,200 93,600 Weekly 2% $2 $4 $6 $8 $10 $12 $14 $16 $18 $20 $24 $28 $32 $36 Annual Weekly Annual Weekly Annual Weekly Annual Weekly Annual 2% 4% 4% 6% 6% 8% 8% 10% 10% $104 $4 $208 $6 $312 $8 $416 $10 $520 $208 $8 $416 $12 $624 $16 $832 $20 $1,040 $312 $12 $624 $18 $936 $24 $1,248 $30 $1,560 $416 $16 $832 $24 $1,248 $32 $1,664 $40 $2,080 $520 $20 $1,040 $30 $1,560 $40 $2,080 $50 $2,600 $624 $24 $1,248 $36 $1,872 $48 $2,496 $60 $3,120 $728 $28 $1,456 $42 $2,184 $56 $2,912 $70 $3,640 $832 $32 $1,664 $48 $2,496 $64 $3,328 $80 $4,160 $936 $36 $1,872 $54 $2,808 $72 $3,744 $90 $4,680 $1,040 $40 $2,080 $60 $3,120 $80 $4,160 $100 $5,200 $1,248 $48 $2,496 $72 $3,744 $96 $4,992 $120 $6,240 $1,456 $56 $2,912 $84 $4,368 $112 $5,824 $140 $7,280 $1,664 $1,872 $64 $72 $3,328 $3,744 $96 $108 $4,992 $5,616 $128 $144 $6,656 $7,488 $160 $180 $8,320 $9,360

An example of how to use this chart If your familys total annual income for 2011 was $36,400 and your financial contributions totaled $728, you would have contributed 2% of your income last year. After prayerful consideration you may decide to increase your total giving to the 4% level, or $1,456 for this year. If you designate $500 for causes outside of our parish (diocesan collections, charities, etc.) that would leave $956 for St. Ann Parish, approximately $18.50 per week. We thank you for your generosity which helps us continue the good work of our parish. Sunday, March 18 Griffin Hall 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM
The Ministry Fair offers you the opportunity to see all the good works going on in St. Ann Parish. Representatives from all our parish groups will be on hand to talk with you about the work they do. There is nothing to buy and no pressure to join. Have a complimentary beverage and snack. Children are welcome in the play area while you browse the displays. Free door prizes are drawn three times during the fair. Prizes this year include gift certificates from Bridge Street Chocolate, Colonial Theatre, Gateway Pharmacy, Regal Theatres, Stortis Restaurant and Wawa as well as a wide assortment of candles, books and childrens selections. Again this year we will have a free drawing for a Family Membership to the Philadelphia Zoo.
