Summer Tribal DOT Laborer


This position requires updating the Tribal Roads Inventory and removal of brush and trees from various road right of way corridors. Laborers will use approved methods to collect data to update the existing road inventory and correct erosion damage and maintain trails. Work will be done using power and hand tools, trucks, and ATVs. The incumbent performs a variety of routine work within established policies and procedures, and receives detailed instructions on new projects and assignments. Team: Capital Projects Reports to: Trail Crew Leader Salary Status: Non Exempt from Overtime Responsibilities/Duties: Salary range: $14.00-$16.00 per hour Schedule: Seasonal, full-time

Collect data to update the NVE Road Inventory Clear brush and debris from overgrown roads and trails. Repair erosion damage to trails. Operate chainsaws and other power equipment in a safe manner (adult applicants only) Operate NVE vehicles such as autos, boats and ATVs according to NVE safety guidelines.(adult applicants only) Perform and document maintenance on all equipment. Work outdoors and live in remote campsite. Attend all required staff meetings and trainings. Coordinate with other agencies. Other duties as assigned.

Competencies (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities) Must have the ability to take direction from Trail Crew Leader and work in a team environment. Prior knowledge and skills to assess field conditions preferred. Applicant must be able to work as a part of a team. Applicant must have the ability to work for long hours in rough terrain in inclement weather, knowledge of basic power tool operation and the ability to complete work safely and efficiently using power tools (adult applicants only) and hand tools. Ability to operate ATVs, knowledge and skills operating small boats in open and swift water preferred. (adult applicants only) Experience Requirement: Experience in operating small boats, ATVs and power tools required. (adult applicants only) Experience working in remote areas and in outdoor conditions preferred. Current Alaska Drivers license. Education Requirements: High school diploma, equivalent or enrolled in secondary school.

Performance standard Applicant must be able to regularly lift and carry 75 lbs. over rough terrain. The position requires that applicants are in sufficient condition to perform physically demanding tasks. The use of hand, eye and muscle coordination to safely operate boats, power tools (adult applicants only) and hand tools is required. Environmental Factors Majority of work will be completed out of doors. The position poses significant risk of encountering inclement/cold weather and dangerous wildlife. Some possibility of remote/cold water survival situations. This position entails risks of injury from using power tools and normal risks of physical labor done in the outdoors.
