CAP SAVES!
According to CAP NHQ, CAP handles 90 percent of inland search and rescue missions, with approximately 75 lives saved each year. But if you sit back and think about it we save people everyday. We save cadets. How many would be taken in by the darkside of teenage mischief if we did not teach them and guide them to be a better person? We save the dead. How many memorials and funerals have you attended in uniform to pay respect and to give a final salute? We save survivors. We volunteer to serve our nation, state, and communities when a natural disaster hits or a plane wrecks. To offer assistance to those in need. Ever saved an old man's mind? I have listen to an old veteran talk about his days as a young military aviator, amongst planes he flew. I listen as he struggled to come up with the name of the warbird -- then when it hit him -- he remembered it all. I have seen him smile as he remembers a memory long past and almost forgotten. Yeah, I got my medal for that one and it is shinier than any medal on my jacket. If you're waiting for next "call out" from the Air Force? Good for you. In the meantime go save someone. A cadet? A former member? A family? For this work the taxpayers have paid nothing. I've never saved a real live human according to CAP NHQ. BUT, I've saved plenty of people, memories, and much respect. You should too. We save tax payers and we save ourselves. For in the company of one another we find purpose and duty.

This Issue Senior Profile Name: Kristin Gragan Rank: 1st Lt SQN Position: Assistant Deputy Commander for Cadets Small Bio: I grew up in Pomeroy, Ohio and attended Meigs High School. In high school my favorite things were playing basketball and running track. When I went to college at Berea College in Kentucky in the fall of 1982, I began playing on the tennis team and I continued playing when I transferred to Marietta College in January 1984. I met Pat at MC that January and we were married in June 1986 after we graduated. We became members of Fellowship Baptist Church in Vienna in 1984, where we are still involved today. After Andrew and Jared came along, I spent the next 17 years homeschooling them. We found out about CAP in the summer of 2003 and both boys joined that fall. I joined in December and Pat shortly after that in order to do things with the boys because we knew how fast time was

Senior profile cont. flying by. We have both been working with the Cadet Program since joining and we also are Ground Team Members. I am currently studying to take my Course 13 exam and am hoping to spend more time on scanner training. My favorite thing about CAP is working together with the Cadets and Senior members to accomplish something that benefits our entire community. Favorite Quote: "Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labor. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up." - King Solomon in Ecclesiastes 4:910 This is one of my favorite quotes and it goes along so well with how CAP functions best when we work together, encourage one another, and never have to feel like we have to do it all on our own.

If you were arrested for being an ACTIVE CAP member, would there be enough evidence to convict you? Congratulation to Senior Member Julie Robertson for her recent promotion to 2nd LT.

Safety Corner
Spring safety tips for our walkers, runners, and bicyclists; all of whom have to share our narrow roads and streets with motor vehicles: Pretend that youre invisible Sounds sort of funny but its a good way to keep from getting run over. Make it irrelevant whether drivers see you or not. If you always assume that a driver doesnt see you, youll be a lot safer. Never run or walk more than two-abreast, and make sure you face traffic, keeping as close to the shoulder-of-the-road as possible incase you have to take evasive action. Bikers should travel with traffic, and obey the rules of the road, while always wearing a helmet. Wear reflective clothing Take a look at the next police officer you see on traffic duty. Their wearing reflective colors you should too, if youre going to be in the roadway. Be attentive to the lighting conditions. Its harder for drivers to see during dusk and dawn. Remember that solar glare is a factor in a lot of accidents. Keep a cell phone with you. Its good to program the word ICE in your cell phone contact list. ICE stands for In case of emergency. Just enter your emergency contact person (Mom, dad, husband, wife, brother, sister, etc) under the name ICE, so police, fire, or EMS personnel will have a point of contact in case youre involved in an accident and we dont know who you are. Any finally, drivers should keep their windshields clean. Its also an excellent idea to wash-off your headlights and taillights when you gas-up. It makes a big difference.
