THE SLEELPING DICTIONARY KEY ELEMENTS

The Sleeping Dictionary movie served as a perspective of cultural linguistics, an insight to the contrasting similarities and differences present in our world and an observation to the assimilation of minor groups. Macro-micro worlds Micro world local longhouse tribe, relationship with sleeping dictionary, son, Yakata, Sarawak, habits of locals, unfamiliar local customs Macro world british colony, cultural immersion, relationship between culture and language Family Differences in families are demonstrated through the characters contrasting identities. Johns family is nuclear and his upbringing is mainstream which responds to the dominant societys standards. Selimas however, is very cultural based, with the families having different tribes though the culture is a whole connected extensive family. Their families are built on their own beliefs, own rules and own way of living unlike Johns conformist and accepted family construction. Socialization The Iban people are socialized into a world where the British colony is in authority. They are obliged to assimilate, as the British authorities make them behave in a way that is acceptable to their society. An example would be the scene where the lady shot the coins, signaling the children to start working in their terms and conditions and according to their rules. Social institutions Social institutions serve as a template or model for the marginalized group (Iban people) and for them to assimilate into the dominant societys standards (British). In the movie Sleeping Dictionary, John has to learn to effectively communicate with the Iban people to successfully impose the British colonial justice on the tribe. Examples of social institutions within the movie are the schools being built for the Iban people by the British government, providing education as a loan to civilize their culture. Gender The gender difference is clearly seen through the roles carried out by both sexes. Men usually serve as the protectors, hunters and warrior for the tribe whilst the women perform household duties and are in charge of the children and food production. Also, the accepted practice of women as sleeping dictionaries shows how women are inferior to the males and society as a whole. Roles and Status In the extensive world, the British government colonizes and leads the Iban people. A respectable status is also imposed on John, as he is the representative of the Government whilst Selima is half-caste, therefore she is looked down upon and discriminated against. Personal roles are shown in the relationship of Selima and John and demonstrate that despite the inferiority of the Iban people and women, a certain type of respect is still given by John. The role of the government is clearly outlined through the

assimilation and authority imposed on the Iban people. Communication (between people, groups and the colonial power)
