Methodology

Criteria to be used:
Energy and water efficiency 40%
Since malls are considered a large consumer of electricity in the commercial sector, it is only fitting if energy efficiency is one of the eco-friendly goals. Green malls should have the goal of becoming carbon neutral so that they use only sustainable sources of energy. Beginning this process requires offsetting energy usage, generating on-site renewable sources of energy, and using more energy- efficient equipment. Conservation of water - An eco-friendly malls goal is to promote water conservation and efficiency. Landscaping, restrooms, and kitchens are analyzed to calculate consumption and efficiency including water catchment and reuse, lowflow rate of sinks and toilets, and EnergyStar efficient washing machines. Rainwater harvesting for landscape irrigation is an example of how the mall promotes conservation of water.

Overall orderliness, cleanliness, and safety 35%

The orderliness, cleanliness, and safety of the mall should be given importance more than ever. It is beyond organizing conservation and efficiency. Malls dont have to be necessarily squeaky clean, just maintaining them properly and keeping them in a good, safe working condition will be more than enough.

If a place is too messy, you cant expect anyone stay there for so long.

Institutionalizing environmental management policies 15%

for implementing environment-friendly office operations, particularly in waste management, electricity, water and fuel conservation, air pollution prevention, emergency preparedness, green procurement and greening; Eco-friendly malls should aim to reduce waste output, increase reusable items, recycle, and compost anything left over. The ultimate environmentally friendly mall is a zero-waste facility. This can be accomplished from various perspectives through other conservation and reuse efforts of the restaurant. Bio-based materials and recycling Restaurants are encouraged to use bio-based materials, derived from living matter, or recycled materials in providing new products. Examples of this include eliminating disposables such as napkins, dishes and utensils, and takeout containers, and then replacing them with reusable ones.

Furnish with nature (Landscaping, Irrigation, Use of natural materials as decorations, etc.) 10%
One of the most telling signs of an environmentally conscious mall is its furnishings and dcor. A truly eco-friendly mall is constructed of natural and recycled materials, and then furnished with reused or salvaged accessories. Attractive furniture can easily be made from bamboo or recycled wood, and it adds a unique element to the establishment.

Our research methodology focused on qualitative observations and opinions of different mall goers and our very own observation and opinion as to a particular malls eco-friendliness and environmental advancement. We first focused on our own observations by immersing ourselves in the different malls through reviewing stores and facilities like food courts, restaurants, grocery stores and restrooms. We took down details as to how the mall dealt with proper garbage segregation systems, clean environmental decorations, eco-friendly alternatives as to water consumption on restrooms and management actions on safety and environmental policies. After the immersion and assessment of these different facilities, we then asked different mall goers on their opinions and observations on the respective malls eco-friendliness and environmental support. Some of these questions were a.) How do you find this particular mall as to being the most eco-friendly mall in Cebu? b.) what aspects or dimensions can this particular mall improve on in being more eco-friendly? c.) do you think that management on this particular mall is doing its best in implementing its safety and environmental policies? After gathering all information - observations and opinions- we then gave respective scores on how the different malls responded to our given criteria. We did our best as to fairly representing and scoring this evaluation through balancing our own opinions and observations with the opinions and observations of other respondents. Henceforth, we claim that this evaluation is just.
