JAWAHARLAL NEHRU TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY HYDERABAD B.Tech (CCC) I Year Examinations February - 2011 MECHANICS OF SOLIDS (Civil Engineering) Time: 3 Hours Max.Marks:100 Answer Any Five Questions All Questions Carry Equal Marks --1. A tie bar of cross - sectional area 1000mm2 is subjected to an axial tensile load of 70 kN. Find the normal, tangential and resultant stresses on a plane the normal to which makes an angle of 300 with the axis of the bar. Find also the max. values of these stresses and the planes on which they act. [20] Graphically represent the maximum Principal stress theory for a two-dimensional stress system. At a point in an elastic material the principal stresses are 1.5 f (tensile), f (tensile) and 0.5f (compressive). If the elastic limit in simple tensile is 200 N/mm2, find f at failure according to maximum principal stress theory. Take 1/m = 0.3. [8+12] 3000 H.P. has to be transmitted at 60 R.P.M. If the safe allowable shear stress is 100 N/mm2 find the necessary dia. of a solid shaft. If a hollow section is used with its internal dia, = 3 4 of the external dia. find the saving in weight per meter length. Density of material = 90 kN/m3. [20] A closely coiled helical spring is made out of 10mm dia. steel rod, the coil having 12 complete turns. The mean dia. of spring is 10mm. Calculate the shear stress induced in the section of the rod due to an axial load of 250N. Find also the deflection under the load, energy stored in the spring and the stiffness of spring. [20] Take N = 8 104 N / mm 2 . A strut, 6 metres long, end free, has to be erected to withstand a load of 400KN. Two sections are available: a) 300 mm 150 mm R.S.J., thickness of flanges 18 mm, thickness of web 10 mm. b) A.C.I. section, 225 mm external diameter, thickness of metal 25 mm which is more suitable? Use Rankines formula with a factor of safety of 3 in both cases; Fc for steel, 315N/mm2 for C.I., 550 N/mm2. [10+10]

Fig.1. 7. A thick cylinder having internal radius 200mm and external radius 300mm is subjected to 4 N/mm2. Find the internal pressure that can be applied if the max. Permissible stress is 15 N/mm2. Find also the change in thickness of the cylinder. 1 Take E = 200 GN/m2 and = 0.3 . [20] m

Show that the resultant max. deflection in a beam under unsymmetrical bending occurs in a direction perpendicular to the neutral axis for any given direction of loading. Hence derive the expression for max deflection in a simple-supported beam Subjected to u.d.l. under unsymmetrical bending. [10+10]
