Differentiated Lesson Plan - writing a one scene play - focusing on character and story Engage and orient the reader by setting out a problem, situation, or observation and its significance, establishing one or multiple point(s) of view, and introducing a narrator and/or characters; create a smooth progression of experiences or events. Use narrative techniques, such as dialogue, pacing, description, reflection, and multiple plot lines, to develop experiences, events, and/or characters. Use precise words and phrases, telling details, and sensory language to convey a vivid picture of the experiences, events, setting, and/or characters. Standards Resources Andres Mother - short play Elmo or overhead Dramatic Structure Works sheet Details Reading a short play, then writing one of their own - clearly establishing beginning, middle, and end - clear characters Learning Objectives: Students will review and complete work on dramatic structure. Students will create a mind map of a certain word or phrase. Students will create a one page play with clear dialogue, a strong story line, and clearly established characters. Assessment of Objectives Students will produce a one page play - however, it does not need to follow a certain structure. A student can write dialogue, draw images, or any other method approved by the teacher- as long as the play clearly establishes story and characters. Additionally, the mind maps and TWPS will be checks for thinking.Alex Baranosky Differentiation Method

The product can be whatever the student feels comfortable with. We will do a readers theatre type reading of Andres Mother before hand as well. Readiness and interests are taken into consideration. Strong readers will be selected for the readers theatre of the short play, and the product that needs to be created has specific requirements, but the format is not specific. The assessment is also differentiated, students will be creating their own short play and students can choose how they tell their story. If a student is not a strong writer and wishes to create their play using pictures only, that is acceptable. Higher achieving students are also asked to incorporate more literary techniques that we have learned previously. This option is open to all students as a way to earn extra credit on the assignment. Lesson Procedures I will quickly front load and remind students of dramatic structure and what it takes to create clearly defined, established and interesting characters. (5-10min) Students will group up in groups of 3 and read out loud - Readers theatre style (switching off characters) the short play Andres Mother. (15- 20min) Then, in their groups, students will look at the story line of the script. What happened? What were the main plot points? Beginning? Middle? End? Rising Action? Falling Action? Students will fill out a dramatic structure sheet for the play. (15-20 minutes) Next, I will model a mind map for students. This is where we will begin the writing process of a short play. Mind mapping is a tool used by writers and theatre artisans alike, mostly in improvisation. When given a word, you map out all other words that could be related and see where it takes you. (5-10min) In pairs (2) you will do a mind map for a word. Your then, you will each write a one page play based on the mind map. Where the mind map goes...that is where your play can go. Like in my mind map, on pizza, my play could be about a Cheetah in Italy. Or it could be able someone who stole cheese. (15-12min)
