Grade Level: 1 Subject: Reading Prepared by: Tiffany Galloway Overview and Purpose: This lesson is designed to track fluency in reading. It is set for first grade students through an accessible app on an iPod Touch, iPad, or iPhone. Educational Standards: Idaho

Goal 1.7: Acquire Fluency

1.LA.1.7.1 Read at least 150 regular and irregular sight words fluently. Objectives: Specify skills/information that will be learned
1.LA.1.7.2 Read aloud Grade 1 text fluently with at least 54 correct words per minute.

Given a hand held device, students will be able to produce technological skills by
using a mobile app. Students will be able to evaluate their own growth in becoming fluent readers. Students will be able to compare and track their timed readings. Materials Needed: iPod Touch/iPad/iPhone Downloaded App: K12 Timed Reading Practice Other Resources: (websites, videos, books, etc.) http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/k12-timed-reading-practice/id374985358?mt=8 Information: Give and/or demonstration necessary information

1.Download the app K12 Timed Reading Practice on the device(s) being used. There is
one for free and one that costs $1.99. The free one does not have as many stories for students to read. 2.Think about individual students who can benefit from extra timed reading practice to build fluency or use it with the entire class. 3.Program the names of students into the app on the device being used and insert their reading or grade level. Verification: Steps to check for student understanding

1.Students will read the same fluency story for one week. 2.The teacher and student will evaluate the scores to see the amount of change in
words read per minute. 3.Students will keep track of their own timed readings for each story. Activity:

The Coach and Reader -A demonstration on how to access the timed reading will be given. This includes how to get to the app, how to click on their name, how to find the reading list of stories, and how to save their fluency score. -Students will get with a partner to do a timed partner read. They will use the device and application with one student listening and one student reading. -One student will be the coach and the other student will be the reader. The Job of the Coach 1. Listen to the reader. 2. Help with a word if the reader gets stuck. 3. If the reader reads a word incorrectly ask them to try reading that word again and repeat the sentence. 4. Check, guide, and encourage the reader. The Job of the Reader 1. 2. 3. 4. Read your story out loud for one minute on the device. Try to do your best reading. Save your word per minute score. Graph the amount of words you read.

-The partners will then switch roles to become the coach and reader. -These students will be partners for one week. -At the end of the week, each student will have their own timed reading graph to analyze their fluency on that particular story. Extensions Every week students can practice a different story and their graphs can be combined into a folder to represent a timed reading portfolio throughout the year. Notes It is beneficial to stay with the same fluency story for at least a week. This way students will be able to see their own growth. They will be able to see how many words they read per minute the very first time on that particular story and then be able to see how many words they improved by with practice. This app is solely for the purpose of timed reading to build fluency. There is not a comprehension component to check the understanding of the stories. However, as a teacher you can modify that to create your own checking for comprehension questions.
