Name of Lesson: Spanish Family Members

Grade Level: 7-12 Subject: Spanish Prepared by: Fabiola Teruel Overview and Purpose: In this lesson, students will learn how to say family members in Spanish; they will learn new phrases to improve their communication skills. Educational Standards Standard 1: Aquisition and use of language Goal 1.1: Listening -Objective 1: 7-12.WL1.1.1.1 Comprehend basic vocabulary in isolation and in context. Goal 1.2: Speaking: -Objective 1: 7-12.WL1.1.2.1 Use basic vocabulary to respond to familiar prompts. Goal 1.3: Reading: -Objective 1: 7-12.WL1.1.3.1 Decode written text, diacritical marks, and symbolic systems. -Objective 2: 7-12.WL1.1.3.2 Recognize written forms of basic vocabulary. -Objective 3: 7-12.WL1.1.3.3 Associate the written text with spoken forms. Goal 1.4: Writing: -Objective 1: 7-12.WL1.1.4.1 Write basic vocabulary and short sentences (e.g., from dictation, picture cues, cloze activities, word banks). -Objective 2: 7-12.WL1.1.4.2 Write a logical response to a familiar question or comment. Objectives: Specify skills/information that will be learned At the end of this lesson, you will be able to: * (Knowledge Level) identify family members and match them with their pronunciation. * (Knowledge Level) recognize the pronunciation and writing of family members in Spanish and label them accordingly in exercises. * (Knowledge Level) repeat each vocabulary word using correct pronunciation and say complete sentences after listening to several videos and podcast. * (Knowledge Level) tell a story using the vocabulary learned. * (Comprehension Level) describe family members by using the verb "ser" and using adjectives learned previously. * (Knowledge Level) reproduce sentence structure and correct spelling after watching and listening to several examples. * (Comprehension Level) identify family members in a written and oral description. 1. Post the list of the family member vocabulary and basic sentences. 2. Have the students watch video 1 and video 2 for basic explanations on the use of
family member vocabulary. 3. Listen to podcast 1 and podcast 2 for basic understanding. 4. Listen to Podcast 3 to review the verb tener and tie them with the new vocabulary. Verification: Steps to check for student understanding 1. Students will download the cartoon maker from Language Online Website Cartoon Story Maker. 2. Students will create a cartoon story using the vocabulary learned and they will form sentences to describe family members, to identify family members by asking quin es? and answering it correctly, and to say how many family members one has. 3. Students will write their story in the story board and will also use the record option to record their voice and practice pronunciation. Activity: Describe activity that will reinforce the lesson Go through all the interactive tasks on the Language Online Website. Students should finish 1 through 8 and email the teacher when finished. They should do this before making the cartoon; these games will help them reinforce the vocabulary learned and some phrases learned. As a challenging activity, students should be able to understand Challenging Video 3 and make a family tree to accurately represent the description of the family on the video.

Notes Students should already know how to conjugate the verb tener, have previous knowledge on adjectives that describe a person physically and have some basic understanding of sentence structure in Spanish. In addition to these activities, it is highly recommended to meet through video chat session with the student to reinforce oral skills.
