Makers to dream, to take action, to continue to change the

Osprey Launches Project
To Beneft Seniors
Osprey Community Foundation is initiating a project
that could make life a little easier for struggling local sen-
iors wishing to live independently as long as possible.
Osprey is currently soliciting proposals for a three-year,
$270,000 pilot
project that will
be jointly funded
by the commun-
ity foundation and
Columbia Basin
Trust (CBT). CBT
will be contribut-
ing $100,000 in
funding over a
three-year period.
Te project will
tackle some of
the priorities that
emerged from
an assessment of
seniors needs that
Osprey undertook
last winter. In par-
ticular, it will ad-
dress the need for
improved access
to community
support services.
Osprey commissioned the assessment so that it could
be more efective in allocating money it has available for
granting each year to seniors needs. Te research included
a survey and community engagement process to deter-
mine what would make Nelson and Areas E and F more
senior friendly. Te recommendations supported the basic
desire for seniors independence and the choice to live in
ones own home. Community support services were one
of the top priorities, and include a range of services from
laundry, cooking and shopping assistance to help flling
our forms to regular telephone check-ins.
Osprey has now launched the next step: soliciting pro-
posals to take the results of this assessment and put some-
thing on the ground to achieve positive results for seniors.
Columbia Basin Trust is happy to support the Osprey
Community Foundation in their eforts to fnd more in-
novative, sustainable ways to support seniors to live more
independently in the community, said Rona Park, Colum-
bia Basin Trust, Community Liaison. We felt that this was
a unique proposal worth supporting.
To see a copy of the RFP Creating an Age-Friendly Com-
munity: Addressing the Needs of Seniors in Nelson and Area
as well as the assessment report: Creating an Age-Friendly
Community: Assessing Needs and Priorities, go to www.os-
preycommunityfoundation.ca. Closing date for proposals
is Friday, April 20. A meeting of potential bidders is sched-
ule for Wednesday, March 14 at 1 pm.
For further information, contact Vivien Bowers, Execu-
tive Director of Osprey Community Foundation at 250-

The little paper that loves
what it does
The Pennywise, established in 1975 by Patty Axenroth
(Wenger then), has been happily serving Kaslo ever since.
To commemorate our 35th birthday in 2010, we produced a
movie about the 35 years oI Pennywise that bring us to today.
It can be viewed on our website www.pennywiseads.com
Starting as an 8 page, typewritten paper with hand drawn
graphics, the Pennywise quickly took oII because there was
nothing else like it. Today the Pennywise proudly serves
the entire West Kootenay. This paper has become a con-
tender on the international stage...the recipient oI numerous
international awards Ior creativity and excellence.
'We are very proud oI these awards, and enjoy the envy
oI our peers who serve much larger markets in areas like
Chicago, Boston, New York, Miami, Seattle, Red Deer
you name it...we go head to head with big cities all the time
and consistently bring more than our Iair share oI trophies
and awards home, to Kaslo, our small town...where our
hearts are. says publisher Patty Axenroth.
'The Pennywise considers its
work environment to be a large
part oI what we take pride in. Not
only is it important to serve our
clients well, it is important to treat the staII well...iI you
don`t have happy staII, you don`t have happy clients.

World Water Day
Presentation
Te Nelson Chapter of the
Council of Canadians and the
West-Kootenay EcoSociety are
presenting an information ses-
sion on the controversial issue
of fracking on Tursday,
March 22 (World Water Day)
at 7 pm at the Seniors Branch
51, 717 Vernon Street (across
from Extra Foods).
Fracking is a technique in-
volving the injection of mil-
lions of litres of water and
thousands of litres of un-
identifed chemicals under-
ground at very high pres-
sure creating fractures in the
underlying shale rock forma-
tions to extract the natural
gas below the surface.
Join Dan Woynillowicz of
the Pembina Institute for a
provocative presentation that
will explore the climate change
and water impacts of shale
gas development in BC. Both
the issues and solutions fa-
cing British Columbians will
be discussed. Dan joined the
Pembina Institute in 2001 as a
policy analyst, and is now the
director of strategy and com-
munications.
For further information go
to www.canadians.org/water/
issues/fracking/index.html.
A Tribute To Patsy Cline
And Johnny Cash
One of the worlds leading and most convincing tribute
artists in the business is coming to the Charles Bailey Te-
atre in Trail on Saturday, March 17 at 7:30 pm.
David James and Big River, an award-winning tribute to
Country Legend Johnny Cash will be touring BC. Armed
with his rich deep voice and the ability to impersonate,
Dave had found his destiny and the rest is history as the
saying goes. He and his band are touring the country just
like Johnny Cash himself did for so many years and keep-
ing the great music alive and well.
Te David James and Big River show also features spe-
cial guest Sara-Jeanne Hosie as Patsy Cline, so be prepared
for a memory flled evening with the country legends.
Tickets are $35.50 and can be purchased by calling 250-
368-9669 or 1-866-368-9669.
Mike Seminoff passed away March 6, 2012, in the very same home he was born in, his
loving family by his side. Born at Willow Point, BC on August 4, 1942, he spent much
of his childhood exploring the same mountains that he continued to enjoy all through
his life. Mike was always happiest snowmobiling on Meadow Mountain. He learned to
ride in 1969 and continued until his last ride on Boxing Day 2011, spent with his family.
A love of all things with engines led to both a career and a lifestyle for Mike. He competed
in snowmobile racing, stock car racing and drag racing. An automotive mechanic by
trade, Mike began by working at Downtown Texaco and Ackland`s Machine Shop
before owning a number of businesses of his own. A natural entrepreneur, he owned
Kokanee Chevron and was a partner in Lakeview Motors until his love of snowmobiling
led him to open his own motorsports dealership. Mike opened Kootenay Sleds and
Wheels in 1978, where he worked until he sold the business and retired in 2004. He also
enjoyed hot rods; after he retired he worked endlessly at restoring a 1957 Chevy Wagon,
which he entered in various car shows.
Mike is survived by his wife Sandra (McDonald); sons Aaron (Jen) and Shawn
(Michelle). He is also survived by his grandchildren Lauren (Aaron), Chelsea (Dan),
Ryan, and Jared (Sam) Seminoff; brothers Bill (Jean) of Vancouver, Nick (Darlene) of
Sayward BC; sisters Vera of Lethbridge and Elly of Pass Creek. Mike was predeceased
by his parents Nick and Mary Seminoff; brothers Nick and Sam and his in-laws Alec
and Betty McDonald.
As per Mike`s wishes there will be no service. In lieu of fowers donations can be made in
Mike`s name to the Kootenay Lake Hospital Foundation, 3 View Street, Nelson, BC V1L 9Z9

Grandpa: You were the reason I got to ride and race dirt bikes and snowmobiles all
through my life. Your passion for motorsports paved the way for all of us to grow up
riding and racing, and for my dad to eventually follow in your footsteps. You were
my frst boss, teaching me to work hard, leading by example. You were respected by
all who knew you and will be missed by your friends and family. You lived a good
life, accomplishing your goals all the way until the end. Ride on, Grandpa.

Once again it is time to ask the people of the area for
nominations for Kaslo Citizen of the Year for 2012. This
award is sponsored by the Kaslo & Area Chamber of
Commerce. It is their way of saying Thank you to good
neighbours for making life better for all of us.
In making a nomination, keep in mind a few simple
guidelines:
1. Recognition should have nothing to do with the
nominees occupation.
2. We look for nominees who quietly and
inconspicuously do good deeds for the people
in the community, whether it is involvement in
community organizations, or helping a neighbour
weed the garden. Consideration given to deeds
known and unknown.
3. Deadline for submissions is April 15, 2012.
These awards have been presented annually, by the
Chamber of Commerce, since 1986. They were presented
occasionally in earlier years.
Please send your nominations to
Citizen of the Year 2012

Kaslo Minor Hockey hosted 10 teams in the Atom B
Playofs March 24; two West Kootenay Minor Hockey
Association championship banners were on the line. All
twenty games were exciting but nothing could prepare
any of the fans for the exhilarating fnishes of both banner
games.
Spokane played Boundary (Midway and area) for one of
the championship banners. At the end of regulation time
the game the teams were tied 1-1. Afer a 5 minute sudden
death overtime; it was still tied. Te fnal game came down
to a shoot out. Boundary won the banner!!
Kaslo played Grand Forks in the championship game for
the other banner. Grand Forks fans had brought trumpets,
drums and cow bells to cheer on their players, Kaslos fans
had no choice but to try and out-cheer them with their voices.
Grand Forks started the scoring of with a hard shot
from the point. Ember Hartland (#4) for Kaslo tied it up.
At the end of the second period, with the second Kaslo
goal scored by Elijah Havers (#7), Grandforks was still up
by a goal; Ember Hartland was able to tie it in the third
and it stayed at three goals each until the buzzer; 5 minute
sudden death overtime was upon them.
Te Kaslo Arena was teeming with loud, cheering fans,
from grandparents, and school mates to moms, dads and
neighbours. GO KASLO GO!! was being chanted al-
most loud enough to raise the barn roof. With two min-
utes lef on the clock, Elijah Havers took the puck and
skated end to end and ripped a shot, top corner to win
the game for his team!! Kaslos bench quickly fooded
onto the ice and celebrated a fantastic win. Te home
team crowd went wild!!
Dave Zarikof, West Kootenay Minor Hockey Associa-
tion Atom Governor went on the ice with the banner and
gave a brief speech about the amazing hockey that was
played in Kaslo that weekend before he presented the
hard -won banner to the Kaslo team.
Kaslo and District Minor Hockey Association wishes
to thank all the many, loud and supportive fans, all the
of cials, the ef cient arena staf and all the teams for
contributing to this momentous weekend. Te Kaslo
Winterhawks Atom team could not have had the year
they did without their great coaches Chad Jones, and
Lindsay McKinnon. Te next Kaslo Minor Hockey event
will be the Awards night, in April.

Co-op Responds
To Property Purchase Concerns
Since news of the Coops purchase of the 708 Vernon
St. Property was announced to members on February 13,
the Kootenay Coop has been gathering feedback from
memberowners and the larger community.
Te feedback has been very enthusiastic overall. Our
current facility exceeded its capacity years ago. As we
continue to grow, the need for a larger downtown space
with parking has been a clear priority for the majority of
our members, says general manager Deirdrie Lang.
Criticism of the move has been primarily in the form of
expressions of concern for the staf of Extra Foods. We
live in a very caring community and thats what people are
expressing, says marketing & outreach manager Jocelyn
Carver. We share the concern for the Extra Food staf.
Its important to understand that the Coop did not
terminate the Extra Foods lease, clarifes project man-
ager Russell Precious. Te lease was terminated because
the property owner chose not to renew it. Te property
owners have their own reasons for deciding to sell the
property instead.
However, the sale of the property does not necessar-
ily mean the imminent closure of Extra Foods. We rec-
ognize the impact of those job losses. says Lang. For
that reason, she explained, the Coop has contacted the
regional vice president of Loblaws and ofered to negoti-
ate a shortterm lease on the property that would allow
Extra Foods to continue operating for another 6 to 12
months. Tis would also help shorten the time between
when jobs are lost and new jobs are created.
In the meantime, the Coop will consider several dif-
ferent development options for the property. Relocation
will be a year or two into the future. Te Coop will be
seeking member input and expects there will be multiple
opportunities for member and community participation.
Te next opportunity for member input regarding the re-
development will be at a Special General Meeting, Mon-
day, March 19 at 7 pm at the Best Western Baker Street
Inn. All members are encouraged to attend.

Can You Spare An Hour?
For the fourth consecutive year, FortisBC is encouraging
families and businesses across the region to switch of, un-
plug and join millions of people around the world in par-
ticipating in Earth Hour on Saturday, March 31 at 8:30 pm.
Earth Hour is an opportunity to join with others in
thinking about the energy we consume, every hour of
every day, said Tom Loski, vice president, customer ser-
vice, FortisBC. Tis year, we hope to see a greater drop
and have even more people commit to participate in Earth
Hour 2012.
FortisBC is again sponsoring an Earth Hour Challenge
encouraging residents to pledge to turn of all non-essen-
tial lighting, appliances and electronics by visiting fortis-
bc.com/earthhour, or by phoning 1-866-436-7847. Tose
that pledge are entered to win a weekend away at the Man-
teo Resort in Kelowna, and the individual pledges will be
counted in our community challenge where communities
in our region have each appointed a worthy non-proft
organization for a chance to win up to a $5,000 energy
savings upgrade.
Te community with the highest per capita participa-
tion rate will win the Earth Hour Challenge, frst intro-
duced in 2009 and sponsored each year by FortisBC. Te
winning community receives bragging rights and their
appointed non-proft organization receives the $5,000
energy savings toward their facility upgrade.
Keremeos took the honours in 2011 and their non-prof-
it charity of choice, Te Royal Canadian Legion, Branch
192, received the prize.
Winning the Earth Hour Challenge allowed our legion
to invest in a new heat pump, remarked Mike Favel, Sec-
retary/Treasurer for Te Royal Canadian Legion, Branch
192. Te money we received covered the lions share of
the cost and we are looking forward to seeing a real difer-
ence in our energy consumption over the years.
Te following non-proft organizations are in the run-
ning for this years $5,000 energy savings upgrade, and
will rely on participation pledges from residents in their
local community to win: City of Trail, Trail Family and
Individual Resource Centre Society (FAIR); City of Ross-
land, Rossland Council for Arts and Culture; City of Nel-
son, Nelson Cares Society; City of Castlegar, Habitat for
Humanity; Village of Salmo, Salmo Public Library; Village
of Fruitvale, Beaver Valley Seniors Manor and the Village
of Kaslo, Te Langham Society
For more information about the FortisBC Earth Hour
Challenge and to make a pledge, visit www.fortisbc.com/
Children And Lead: Did You Know?
Lead can cause many harmful health efects, especially
in children. Exposure to even low levels of lead can dam-
age the nervous, cardiovascular and reproductive systems,
and the kidneys. It can cause learning disabilities and
other harmful conditions as children develop, and preg-
nant women must also be careful as lead can pass through
the placenta and later can be transferred through breast
milk.
One way to reduce exposure to lead in children is to keep
your home as clean as possible. Dirt and household dust
are among the main sources of lead for children under six
years of age. Dusting, vacuuming and wet-mopping will
help to keep dust levels down.

New Denver Writers Retreat
Disputed oil pipelines, the Occupy movement, threats to
Canadas pension system in a time of expanding public
attention to social issues, a writers retreat in New Denver
from Friday, May 11 to Sunday, May 13 will consider writ-
ing that focuses on social justice.
Te Convergence Writers Retreat will ofer three talks/
discussions on aspects of social change writing, three
writing workshops on a variety of themes, and a Sunday,
May 13 afernoon public reading and musical perform-
ance. Te retreat will happen at New Denvers Hearts Rest
Retreat Centre.
Registration for the retreat is now open; cost is $236,
which includes meals throughout the event. Five scholar-
ships are available for attendees between 18 and 30, and
the frst ten registrants of whatever age receive a $15 gif
certifcate from Winlaws Jennies Book Garden. Registra-
tion, scholarship application, accommodation informa-
tion and directions to Hearts Rest are available at www.
heartsrest.com/convergence/convergence-writers-retreat
Every social movement needs writers to articulate its
ideas, whether through songs, poems, stories or other
means of conveying the message, said New Denver writer
and journalist Art Joyce, a member of the Convergence
Writers Retreat organizing committee. With the current
interest in social justice as expressed through develop-
ments like the Occupy movement, the time seemed ap-
propriate to ofer this event.
Joyce will speak and lead a discussion From Rant to
Slant: the Political in Poetry. Other speakers/discussion
leaders at the retreat are Hearts Rest co-founder Terese
DesCamp whose subject is Te Minds Alchemy: Under-
standing Metaphor, and Hearts Rest co-founder George
Meier who with DesCamp will ofer What Sustains Us: Te
Work of the Heart, on techniques for overcoming despair
in the long struggle for benefcial social change.
On the Saturday and Sunday morning, Retreat partici-
pants can attend a workshop at which their own writing
will be the subject of attention. Although submitted writ-
ing by participants can be on any subject, each of the three
ofered workshops will have a nominal focus. Workshop
facilitators are Nelson editor and educator Verna Relkof,
who will consider audience in writing, New Denver writer
and visual artist Judy Wapp, who will zero in on the rant
as an efective literary form, and Winlaw author and edu-
cator Tom Wayman, who will look at the use of humor in
social change writing.
Te Convergence Retreat cofeehouse held on Sunday at
2 pm is open to the public. It will showcase local singer-
songwriter Dominique Fraissard as well as readings by
Retreat participants.
Te Convergence Writers Retreat has received support
from the Columbia Basin Trust and Hearts Rest Retreat
Centre.

Canadas New Anti-Spam Law
Te federal government is committed to safeguarding
the online marketplace for the beneft and protection of
both consumers and businesses. As a result, it has passed
a new anti-spam law that is expected to come into force in
2012. Te law targets various types of violations including:
the sending of commercial electronic messages with-
out express or implied consent;
the alteration of transmission data without express
consent;
the installation of computer programs on another per-
sons computer system without express consent;
false or misleading electronic representations used to
promote products, services or business interests; and
the unauthorized collection of electronic addresses and
the collection of personal information by accessing a com-
puter system in contravention of an Act of Parliament.
A website, www.fghtspam.gc.ca has been set up and
contains information about the law and advice on how to
protect yourself and your electronic devices from being
attacked, and what you can do to fght spam under the
new legislation.
Te Info for Individuals section provides information
on how to protect yourself online. Te Info for Busi-
nesses and Organizations section is designed specifcally
for businesses and organizations who want to learn about
their responsibilities under the new law and how to pro-
tect their operations and those they contact electronically
from possible harm.
