ARGUNAUT 1.

0 SERVER INSTALLATION
Notes: i. Its suggested that only lab techs and/or high-level users attempt this installation. ii. Make sure that you have admin authorizations for the computer you are attempting to install this server on. Otherwise, the installation will not succeed and/or will be lost as soon as the computer is restarted. iii. These instructions are meant for those who wish to work with Argunaut over an intranet (e.g., school computer lab). The Argunaut client can also be used with the dedicated AKKA server over the internet. If you choose to use it with the AKKA server (its the client installation default), you do not need to perform the following installation. iv. Its only necessary to install the server on one computer, although multiple users can be used in the same computer laboratory. 1) Getting the right version of Java: Make sure that you have the right version of Java needed: JDK 1.5.x. Odds are you have the JRE version rather than the JDK. You can find out by looking at: C:\Program Files\Java (or whichever directory you have Java in):

In this picture there is a folder whose name starts with JDK1.5, so we know we have the right version. If you don't see a folder that starts with jdk1.5 there, you need to DOWNLOAD JAVA JDK 1.5 at this address: http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index_jdk5.jsp Select the JDK 5.0 Update 12 version (or whatever the most recent version is, if you prefer, as long as it's JDK 5.0) and continue to download and install it. The installation process should take quite a few minutes. Don't be discouraged. This is something you only have to do once, before you install ARGUNAUT for the first time. 2) Setting the JAVA_HOME variable:

The instructions below refer to Windows XP. If there is a difference for Windows Vista, it is stated in parentheses.
a. b. c. d. e. f. g. h. Right click on the My Computer icon (or on "Computer", if you're using Windows Vista) on your desktop and select properties Click the Advanced Tab ("Advanced system settings" link in Vista) Click the Environment Variables button Under System Variable (or "user variable"), click New Enter the variable name as JAVA_HOME Enter the variable value as the install path for the Development Kit (see explanation below) Click OK Click Apply Changes

This diagram shows setting the JAVA_HOME variable to the right install path (in windows XP). You will probably need something that looks like C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.5.0_12, but you should just take a look in your Java directory and see what the correct name and path of the JDK1.5 folder are (see step 1 above). (Personally, I just open the jdk folder and then copy the path from the windows explorer window.)

This is something you only have to do once, before you install ARGUNAUT. 3) Downloading the ARGUNAUT SERVER 1.0 ZIP file (compatible with the 1.0.1 client):
a. b. Go to http://argunaut.collide.info. Download Argnaut-L Server 1.0 (zip).

Unzip the zip archive to a directory of your choice. Before starting/installing clients, please be sure to run the server, by double-clicking the StartServer.bat file, provided within the archive (the file name may show up without the BAT suffix). Dont close any of the windows that appear, just minimize them. To stop the server once the students/teachers finished working with Argunaut, doubleclick the StopServer.bat file, also provided in the archive.
