MISSOURI MILIT Y MEMORIAL AR

OUR MISSIOn
The Missouri Military Memorial Foundation will raise funds to erect a monument, to be located in downtown Saint Louis, to honor Missouri servicemen and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice. This particular memorial will specifically and individually name each of the 144 (to date) of our Missouri residents who were killed in action or were a casualty of War during Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom or the Desert Storm / Desert Shield Wars. Missouri Military Memorial Foundations web address is www.missourimilitary.org and we welcome your visit to become familiar with each of those Missouri residents we intend to honor. The stories for most of them are available and as you read them, you will hopefully feel the same emotion we do and the desire to preserve their memories with the memorial.

Missouri Military Memorial Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization. We consist of a group of dedicated volunteers (family & friends of fallen military personnel) raising money to build a memorial for our fallen heroes of Missouri. This will be in downtown St. Louis, Missouri in front of Soldiers Memorial. Join us in creating something beautiful to remember our fallen soldiers, of Missouri, who were killed in action or a casualty of war during Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom or the Desert Storm/Desert Shield Wars.

LOCA TIOn OF MEMORIAL

Soldiers Memorial in beautiful Downtown St. Louis was the obvious place as the mission of both groups runs parallel. The initiative to construct a memorial plaza and memorial building to honor the gallant sons and daughters of Missouri, and of our city, who made the supreme sacrifice in the World War, began in 1923. Sadly, continuing conflicts have created the need for additional memorials and it is only fitting that the monument for those killed in these most current conflicts be with those from Missouri who have previously given their lives while serving their country. Our plan is not to change the existing landscape but to enhance it with this addition. The drawings attached will show an area that may even be utilized as an outdoor gathering place for all veteran and military groups that should be viewed as a welcome addition.

ST AR MOnUMEnTS
The memorial will feature eight to ten granite star monuments. Each monument will feature plaques of fallen heroes representing the state of Missouri. Each star monument will be able to display up to 28 plaques total. The stars will be 6-0 tall in the front and 9-6 tall on the back. All plaques will be placed at or below typical eye level so all can see them, including children or those in wheelchair. Background: When a family loses a child in a military conflict, they become a Gold Star family. During the early days of World War I, a Blue Star was used to represent each person, man or woman in the Military Service of the United States. As the war progressed and men were killed in combat, others wounded and died of their wounds or disease, there came about the accepted usage of the Gold Star. This Gold Star was substituted and superimposed upon the Blue Star in such a manner as to entirely cover it. The idea of the Gold Star was that the honor and glory accorded the person for his supreme sacrifice in offering for his country, the last full measure of devotion and pride of the family in this sacrifice, rather than the sense of personal loss which would be represented by the mourning symbols. This revered symbol is reflected in the design of the memorial as will be discussed later. Our foundation is composed of several active Gold Star Mothers and Fathers so this effort is also a very personal one as they have each experienced the same loss that of their son or daughter.

ThE CEnTERpIECE
In the center of the memorial will be a granite centerpiece. This centerpiece will hold the American flag. At the base will be a digital display and speakers that will allow us to tell more personal stories about the heroes, show videos about conflicts or anything related to the memorial. In the rendering to the left, you will see that the centerpiece has the Missouri state embossed on the surface and attached letters. The wording shown is only an example. This is likely where we would list the conflicts that are represented by the memorial.

ThE pLAqUES
Perhaps the most important element of the memorial will be the plaques for the heroes. As shown on the left, the plaques will feature a service photo of each hero, along with the branch they served in, and details about them. The plaques will be large, approximately 11 wide by 15 tall on granite. The photos will likely be etched into the stone in black and white.
