Introduction
Technology is playing an increasingly important role in every organization today and libraries are no exception. The volume and complexity of information is increasing exponentially causing libraries to use IT tools to access, organize, and disseminate information more efficiently. Subsequently, it has become imperative for libraries to absorb, adopt and provide IT-based services to the users. Keeping this trend in mind, and taking into consideration two main components, GSDL (Digital Library System) for setting up a digital library and KOHA (Integrated Library System) as a tool for library and information management, HealthNet Nepal is organizing an 8-days Workshop on "Advanced GSDL and KOHA" Digital Libraries have been gaining increasing attention as well as academic interest over the years, across the world. Also, there is increasing demand for improved information and knowledge management solutions in universities, enterprises as well as institutions, which can integrate access to disparate information resources and provide staff personalized information needed to make informed decisions. A key challenge is how do we create an online information environment facilitating internal content publishing and single point access to internal and external information sources. The current information environment unequivocally prompts libraries and information centres to leverage on the latest digital technologies towards building practical digital libraries and in setting up dynamic electronic information systems. Digital Libraries (DL) are structured storage environments of digital data with a consistent format for index and content abstraction. Digital libraries do enable the seamless integration of the scholarly electronic information, help in creating and maintaining local digital content, and strengthen the mechanisms and the capacity of the librarys information systems and services. They increase the portability, efficiency of access, flexibility, availability and preservation of digital objects. Open Digital Library (ODL) technologies are gaining attention the world over. Without proper understanding of the complexities, procedures and practices involved in content building, content management and collection building, individual DLs will remain islands of structure in an unstructured Internet sea. Todays information/IT professional must be capable of leveraging the new technology to its fullest extent.

Rationale
Developing world standard digital libraries demand deployment of costly software solutions which are beyond the reach of most of the universities/institutions in Nepal and those in the Asian region. The Greenstone Digital Library Software is a top of the line and internationally renowned software system for developing digital libraries, promoted by the New Zealand Digital Library project research group at the University of Waikato. Greenstone is developed and distributed in cooperation with UNESCO and the Human Info NGO. It is an open-source software, issued under the terms of the GNU General Public License. The aim of the software is to empower users, particularly in universities, libraries, and other public service institutions, to build their own digital libraries. More details of the software and example digital libraries built using the software is available at http://www.greenstone.org/

There has been growing interest in the area of digitisation, development of DLs (digital libraries), and library automation in the country. The fundamental reason for developing digital libraries is the conviction that they will provide better delivery of information than was possible in the past. Since libraries today contain huge quantities of data, development of digital libraries and subsequent customisation would be very helpful for end users. Among the number of open source software available for building digital libraries and integrated library system: GSDL and KOHA has gained considerable acceptance among the Nepalese as well as global user community because of its simplicity, user-friendliness and ease of use. The workshop on Advanced GSDL and KOHA aims to provide hands-on, basic, and advanced training to library and information professionals who are interested in building digital libraries, and implementation of automated library management systems.

Pedagogy
The workshop will be conducted at the HEALTHNET Nepal. Each participant will be provided a PC supplemented with LCD projected live demos. The pedagogy will be a mix of lectures, discussions, case studies and hands-on sessions. Each participant shall be provided with a CD-ROM comprising of the Greenstone Software, faculty presentations, and other related software packages. Extensive hands-on labs will be a hall mark of this programme.

Objectives:
The objective of the Workshop is to conduct a 5-day rigorous and advanced training programme on Digital Libraries using the Open Source Software: Greenstone and KOHA at HEALTHNET NEPAL, Kathmandu, Nepal. Provide knowledge on digital libraries and automated library management technologies Empower information professionals and librarians in building efficient digital libraries by providing training in digital libraries using basic and advancedfeature of GSDL Software Educate and impart practical knowledge on KOHA applications in libraries To offer hands-on experience on advanced features of GSDL software The workshop programme will include tutorial-type presentations, demonstrations, practical sessions, and will cover the following topics: A.
