Short-range Wireless Communication

Introduction
Wireless communication consists of a broad range of different standards and technologies. Typically these are divided into long range wireless (or mobile) communication and short range wireless communication. Mobile communication typically consists of technologies that can cover a wide range (>100m) e.g. GSM/GPRS/EDGE, UMTS, LTE and WiMax. Short-range wireless communication typically covers short range communications (<100m) e.g. NFC, Zigbee, Z-Wave, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and DECT. This leaflet gives an overview of different short range wireless communication technologies, with project references, in which ICT Embedded has extensive expertise. These include Near Field Communication, Zigbee, Z-wave, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and DECT.
Keywords: NFC, Zigbee, Z-wave, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, DECT/CAT-iq.

Zigbee
Zigbee was created to address the market need for a simple, costeffective, wireless networking solution. It is targeted for low data-rates, and supports low-power consumption, security, and reliability. Zigbee is a standards-based PAN technology that addresses the needs of most remote monitoring & control and sensory network applications. Zigbee is defined on top of the IEEE 802.15.4 standard. Zigbee has the possibility to form a mesh network to extend range and reliability. ICT Embedded has supported companies in developing solutions based on Zigbee in the area of sensors networks and access control.
Keywords: Zigbee Alliance, Mesh networking, IEEE 802.15.4, ISM band: 868 MHz, 915 MHz, 2.4 GHz, 20, 40 or 250 Kbit/s, BPSK and GPSK modulation,

Near Field Communication

Near Field Communication (NFC) enables the exchange of data between devices over about a decimetre distance. The technology is an extension of the contactless card, RFID, which combines the interface of a smartcard and a reader into a single device. ICT Embedded has extensive experience in the NFC technology, e.g. integrated in NFC phones. ICT Embedded has executed different projects where NFC is applied in all three main use cases: Emulating a contactless card (mobile payment, ticketing services, access control, loyalty programs). contactless reader: read MIFARE and NDEF tags. peer-to-peer mode.
Keywords: ISO 14443 proximity-card,, MIFARE, FeliCa, NDEF, NFCIP, SWP, Java Card, RSA encryption, distance 0-10 cm, active & passive modes, , 13.56 MHz,. 106, 212, or 424 Kbit/s, magnetic field induction.

Z-Wave
Z-Wave is a technology, like Zigbee, that finds its application in home automation or sensor networks; it is able to create a wireless, two-way mesh network. This network allows complete control of a large number of compatible devices throughout the home from a single remote control, wall panel, or Internet interface. Z-Wave has the possibility to form a mesh network to extend range and reliability Z-Wave uses a proprietary standard defined by the company Zensys and is adopted by the Z-Wave Alliance. ICT Embedded has done several projects using Zwave technology for companies in the Energy and Utilities market.
Keywords: Z-Wave Alliance, Zensys, Mesh networking, ISM band excl. 2.4GHz, 9,6 or 40 Kbit/s, GFSK modulation.

Bluetooth
Bluetooth is an industrial specification for WPANs. Bluetooth provides a way to connect and exchange information between devices such as mobile phones, laptops, PCs, printers, digital cameras, and video game consoles over a secure, globally unlicensed shortrange radio frequency. It designed for low power consumption, with a short range based on low-cost transceiver microchips in each device. Bluetooth supports different applications profiles like e.g. Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP), Human Interface Device Profile (HID), and Phone Book Access Profile (PBAP). ICT Embedded has executed different projects ranging from Bluetooth stack implementations for chipsets, Bluetooth stack integration in mobile phones, implementation of Bluetooth profiles and development of mobile phone and automotive applications using Bluetooth.
Keywords: Bluetooth Special Interest Group, IEEE 802.15.1, distance 1-10 or 100 meters, three power classes, max. 3 Mbit/s, GFSK modulation.

The DECT standard has been very successful in the consumer market as the de facto standard for cordless phones. The DECT standard operates in an unlicensed protected frequency band. During 2007, CAT-iq (Cordless Advanced Technology - Internet & Quality) is introduced as a standard designed to complement DECT with IP and VoIP services. ICT Embedded has executed different DECT projects on application and protocol stack level ranging from handset and base station development for the consumer market as well as for the business market.
Keywords: ETSI, DECT Forum, Generic Access Profiles, 10 carriers, 24 timeslots, 32 Kbit/s per slot, 250mW.
