TUTORIAL 1(b) : MATRICES AND SYSTEM OF LINEAR EQUATIONS

1.

The matrices P and Q, where PQ = QP, are given by

2 2 0 P = 0 0 2 a b c 0 1 1 Q= 0 0 1 0 2 2

Determine the values of a, b and c. Find the real numbers m and n for which P = mQ + nI , where I is the 3 3 identity matrix.
2. The matrix A is given by

1 2 3 A = 3 1 1 0 1 2
(i) Find the matrix B such that B = A 2 10 I , where I is the 3 3 identity matrix. Find ( A + I ) B, and hence find ( A + I ) 23 B.

3.

Determine the values of a, b and c so that the matrix

2 a2 b2 P = 2a 1 3 bc b b+c 4 is a symmetric matrix.

4.

3 1 1 If A = 1 1 1 , find A 1. Hence, solve the equations 4 1 1

Products X, Y and Z are assembled from three components A, B and C according to different proportions as shown in the following table. Components A B C Product X 2 4 1 Product Y 3 3 2 Product Z 4 1 4 Total number of components 750 1000 500

With x, y, and z representing the number of products of X, Y and Z assembled, obtain a matrix equation representing the information given. Hence, find the number of products of X, Y and Z assembled.

Two groups of workers have their drinks at a stall. The first group comprising ten workers has five cups of tea, two cups of coffee and three glasses of fruit juice at a total cost of RM 11.80. The second group of six workers has three cups of tea, a cup of coffee and two glasses of fruit juice at a total cost of RM 7.10. The cost of a cup of tea and three glasses of fruit juice is the same as the cost of four cups of coffee. If the costs of a cup of tea, a cup of coffee and a glass of fruit juice are RM x, RM y and RM z respectively, obtain a matrix equation to represent the above information. Hence, determine the cost of each drink.
