CHANGING LANDSCAPE:
These pictures show how people have altered the landscape of Marina Bay. Before the 1800s, Marina Bay was a body of water originally used as the port of Singapore were the mouth of the Singapore river lead into the sea. Then, in the 1970s, humans replaced the landscape by reclaimed land, inclosing the bay. They built hotels, resorts and shopping centers to attract more tourists to visit their beautiful sights. Today, because of the changes, Marina Bay is now like a big bowl of candy, you want to enjoy every second of it. Marina Bay now Marina Bay before

PAST TO PRESENT:
Singapore used to be under British Rule when Sir Thomas Stamford Raes established a British port under British colonial Rule in 1819 and established trade for Singapore and dierent parts of the world.Singapore became an important center for trade in Southeast Asia and opened doors to the rest of the world. Then everything changed during WWII when the Japanese took over in 1942. When the war ended in 1945 the British returned, but things were not the same. Infrastructures were destroyed in the war and there was a shortage of food supplies. The Singaporeans were unhappy and blamed the British for not doing more. In 1963 Singapore united with Malaysia and the British left both colonies. Singapore had many political problems with Malaysia. There was a lot of racial tension between the Chinese and the Malays resulting in riots. To avoid any more bloodshed the Parliament of Malaysia voted to expel Singapore from Malaysia. At rst Singapore was like a scary roller coaster ride, they faced huge unemployment, housing crisis and lack of education. As a result, Singapore established a modernization program. With their prime minister Lee Kuan Yew who ruled Singapore from 1959-1990.They developed large scale public housing and public education. There was no more racial tension or unemployment. Over time Singapore evolved from a developing nation into a rst world nation. $ By the 1990s Singapore had become one of the most prosperous nations in the world, because of Lee Kuan Yews leadership they obtained economic growth. Singapore today is a healthy, sustainable, independent nation. Singapore attracts many foreign businesses and visitors, because Singapore has such a high standard of living and, one of the best in Southeast Asia. Over time Singapore has evolved from a caterpillar to a beautiful, free buttery.

And the once proud city of Shanghai was reduced to the criminal underground of China. To prevent another rebellion the Chinese government officials founded the Communist party on July 1 1921, based on the ideology of equality and that the government should be in charge of everything. This marked the end of the Qing dynasty. During 1950 the crime in Shanghai was wiped out and it was well on its way to becoming the Paris of Asia. Many businesses were established in Shanghai and the first hotel in Asia to use light bulbs was in Shanghai. Thanks to the leadership of the Communists, Shanghai is now one of the worlds top cities and China is well on its way to becoming the next world power. When the Communist party was founded it had only about 70people yet now they have 80million followers. If the Communist party was never made, what would it be now? During the start of the Qing dynasty (1644-1921) Shanghai used to be Chinas primary trading port. The Chinese traded silk tea and porcelain, while the Europeans traded wool and spices. Aware that they were LOSING money out of this trade, they ventured into Africa and found the highly addictive Opium to sell to the Chinese, which quickly became their most commonly used drug at the time. To them at the time Opium was like candy, even though you dont need it, you want and FEEL like you need it. Later on, after World War Two Shanghai had different districts for the different countries, and in fact the foreigners had more land than the locals in the city. The representatives of the foreign nations ruled the city, but out of distrust from WWII the Japanese were not included in the governing group. Conflicts and crime began to rise because the Chinese felt like they should be in charge instead of the foreigners. So the Chinese had the

Dubai

Basics on Dubai:
!

Dubai is located in Asia in the UAE (United Arab Emirates). Dubai has a population of 2,000,113 people as of December 22nd 2011.The weather can climb to a scorching 40 degrees or a mild 30 degrees. The common languages are Arabic or English. The most common religions are Islam, Hindu, Sikhs, and Christianity. The holidays are the birth of the prophet the end of Ramadan and the Islamic New Year and many more. The not to miss things are as follows Burj Al Arab, The Dubai mall, Palm Island, Ski Dubai (indoors), and Sheikh Zayed road. Some more not to miss things are Desert safari, Jumeirah mosque, and nally The Beach.

The earliest mention of Dubai was around 1095 as a natural sparkling kingdom. The earliest settlement in Dubai was in about 1799,. and Sheikh Maktoum also formally established Dubai in the year 1833 when he persuaded 800 people in the Bani Yas tribe to follow him to Dubai creek. Dubais economy was built mostly on the oil industry,(there black gold industry) which attracted many people from my point of view it almost turned Dubai into a anthill with a Queen ant deep down. Dubai was also located in one of the key trading hubs back in the seventeenth century near the Persian Gulf. Dubais bad history would denitely be there slave labor industry. The population in Dubai has come to a slow down and is currently at 2,011,084. The most popular religions in Dubai are Islam, Muslim, and Christianity. The most common languages are English, and Islamic. But the most important thing I learned about my city is that Dubai is a very important city to the Middle East and also a big tourist attraction so it will hopefully remain that way for centurys to come.

The Persian Gulf War of 1990 had a huge impact on the citys economy. Dubai banks experienced a massive withdrawal of funds due to uncertain political conditions in the region. During the course of the 1990s, many foreign trading communities moved their businesses to Dubai, rst from Kuwait during the Persian Gulf War, later from Bahrain during the unrest. Before

all of this, Dubai wasnt known for business or free trade, it was well known for its oil industry. Dubai provided refueling bases to allied forces at the Jebel Ali free zone during the Persian Gulf War which affected their relations with the allied forces. There were very large increases in oil prices to. Some of the effects of this change were, Dubai continued to focus on free

trade, tourism, and business and also foreign relations. So at the start of the war these were the darkest of times for Dubai because of the massive bank withdraws. But at the end of this whole dilemma it was the best thing that ever happened.

When I rst got to Dubai it was an amazing spectacle of lights and amazement. In my opinion Dubai has everything you need to attract tourists ve star beaches, hotels amazing sky scrapers and even a desert to top it all off. But the best thing is there food its like all the cultures in the world mixed into one ultra-culture in an ultra-city! I also loved the cruise that we took over the world islands a spectacular spectacle of islands 300 that are the shape of a exact mini scale earth! I love Dubai and I would denitely go back again! When I rst arrived in Dubai it looked like heaven on Earth! It had everything I dreamed of ne cuisine that tickles your taste buds with pure joy. Island in the shape a mini scale earth I mean every ting and more. Even a desert safari and the tallest building in the World! It was complete fantasy since the second I stepped off the plane. DUBAIS SECRETS!
A Changing City:
Dubai in the 1990 I would say was Like the Wild West (and I bet there were cowboys to !) the only tall building there was owned by the Government, but there were almost NO citizens only traders riding camels trying to make a living and look at. all the lakes that dried out, not even one body of water. Only 6 buildings and a road. Not much of the city we see today. Dubai in 2003 was like a well-oiled machine train hufng and pufng across the track. Dubai in 2003 was an amazing sight to see high-rises every where and highways and a lot of potential, but the bad thing was little did they know later on there peaceful city would be the most amazing city ever. From my point of view Dubai was a very and I mean very ambitious city.

Relative Location: Brisbane is located in the southeast of Queensland, which lies upon halfway up the coast of Australia. Absolute Location: Brisbane is located at 27.28 degrees South latitude and 153.02 degrees East longitude.

RICH HISTORY OF BRISBANE

Long before the European explorers discovered the resourceful areas of the Brisbane region; it was home to the Jagera and Turrbal aboriginal clans of Native Australia. Indigenous communities beneted from their stay in the Brisbane region, because the land, river, and its tributaries provided an abundant source of food, needed to support the livinghood of many aboriginals. The opportunities in Brisbane that has been given to the Aboriginals, was like a gift from heaven. In 1824, Surveyor General John Oxley was on his expedition to nd a settlement for a penal colony in Australia to send the worst convicts from Sydney elsewhere. When he met 3 white ex-convicts that have been shipwrecked, they told him that they were forced to live with a group of aborigines. The three white convicts have leaded him to the exploration on the Brisbane River, which he decided to be a suitable place for a penal colony. The rst penal colony was established at the Redcliffe, which was located north of the river, but in 1825, the settlement of the penal colony was moved to a peninsula further up on the Brisbane River due to a more reliable water supply and the site was easy to maintain. It was until 1838 when Brisbane was open to free settlers mostly from England, and quickly built shanties, slab huts and grand houses along the river which encouraged the inux of migrants. Brisbane quickly became a colourful city, the fresh air full of the welcoming scent of new cultures and people, with houses set along the vast land areas which used to belong to the Aboriginals. Settlers from the 1840s realized what a great opportunity to earn income from the harvesting of timber and the establishment of market gardens, along with the abundance in natural resources. They also took advantage of the cleared land, for grazing and farming activities. In 1901, Brisbane became the fastest growing state in Queensland, which made it the main economic centre for many farming, urban and industrial projects, including maritime activity. WW2 changed everything, when Brisbane was used as the Pacic Headquarters for the US military in the command of General Douglas MacArthur. Brisbane was chosen to be the headquarters because of the perfect location close to the South West Pacic Area, to launch an attack on the Japanese Military, and was occupied by the US military personnel, awaiting for deployment for other battles or adding to the support of more troops stationed at the allied military bases and installations in Brisbane. Buildings and institutions were utilized for the use of the US military as a place for the military personnel. Brisbane became the sight of the Brisbane Line dedicated to form a defence proposal allegedly which was planned during WW2 by McArthur. In November 26, 1942 a riot broke out in Adelaide Street, between the clash of Australian and American

servicemen. The riot was the cause of the long tension between the American and Australian military, as the American soldiers had better access to goods and services at low prices, and were given higher incomes. Brisbane had a lot of difculties as their population increased, with a higher crime rate, less resources, and electricity shortages. The Brisbane City has experienced a hard time, after the Brisbane War, because of the destroyed buildings and damaged economy. Fortunately, in 1961, Clem Jones was elected Lord Mayor, who successfully got the nancial support from the improved money saving solutions to solve the problems of Brisbane, in public facility investment, such as a new developed transportation system, power and water supply systems, etc. Since the freeways were built, the transportation system in Brisbane was signicant, and caused more businessmen trading in the city, and the nances in Brisbane increased. Now, Brisbane is one of the top 3 largest cities in Australia achieving the largest economy between Sydney and Singapore. The Brisbane Battle gained more independence from this event, and made Brisbane a stronger city. The recent MacArthur Central is now a signicant landmark of the city, bringing the rich culture and heritage of Brisbane which had attracted many tourists and had left them fascinated. During the inux of American Servicemen stationed in Brisbane, it had negative impacts on the city, but as the population grew, there were more people to be employed, whom made industries in Brisbane prosper, and the locals now have a higher source of income. The Australian Military continued their cooperation with the American Military, resulting in more trading opportunities with America, improving the economy in Brisbane. In the late 20th century, many international big companies like Boeing, went to Brisbane to invest in their business, which caused some demographic and culture changes. Brisbane is like a delicious grilled lobster dribbled down with lemon butter, because of its rich culture and diverse community, and its luxurious resources and high technology, contributing to the huge economic development in the present.

Did You Know?? Did you know Brisbane held World Expo 88 and occurred for 6 months between the month of April 30 1988, to October 30 1988? So far, the 2018 Commonwealth Games will be lead in Gold Coast.

POPULATION AND RESOURCES OF BRISBANE:

In 1902, Brisbane was established as the capital of Queensland. Brisbane lies upon halfway up the east coast of Australia. The Brisbane River flows through and surrounds Brisbane City. Since the Brisbane River, flows through the City of Brisbane, there are a lot of ports located there used as an area for industrial and commercial business, and also a great source of tourist attraction. The city of Ipswich was the designated capital of Queensland, but due to the advantage of the wide-opened river which made an easier access to large ships the capital was moved to Brisbane. In the past, Brisbane was used like an inescapable dungeon to keep the living rats of Sydney there, but when Brisbane was open to free settlers, they came to Brisbane because of the high opportunity in starting a business there, because of the many natural resources such as timber and fish. Brisbane has endless opportunities, like the divergent chromatic colours of the toppings on a fairy bread. One reason why Brisbane is such an economic hub for many foreign investors is because they can highly benefit from the low business cost advantages, the stable political system, excellent global connections, amazing infrastructure in buildings and effective transportation, highly skilled and talented workers, with high employment opportunities, abundant resources (such as coal, timber, and seafood) and advanced technology, with ongoing research facilities in sustaining a carbon free future. The major industries in

Brisbane include digital industries, food and beverage processing, infrastructure, innovative manufacturing, life sciences, logistics and distribution, and mining technologies and services. Resources in Brisbane are improving greatly because of the offered mining services, which leads to more construction and infrastructure in the city. Brisbane has a population of approximately 2,043,185 people as of June 27th 2011. Brisbane has an annual of 2.2% population growth rate. Brisbanes population is growing like the incessant birth growth of the developing countries--- a never-ending journey! The top 3 countries that make up Brisbane, to those born outside Australia were Britain having 6%, New Zealanders having 4% and South Africans. Brisbane is like a warm welcoming door in Christmas morning, and smells like the fresh oven-baked cookies, attracting foreigners and embracing the new cultures of their country. The most common languages that are spoken in Brisbane are Mandarin (1.1%), Vietnamese (0.9%), Cantonese (0.9%), Italian (0.6%), and Samoan (0.5%). The ethnic groups in Brisbane consist of Anglican, Buddhism, Catholicism, Greek Orthodox, Islamic, Judaism, Russian Orthodox, Uniting Church, Roman Catholic, and Protestant. Brisbane was once like plain white rice, without the diversified unique cultures of the many represented countries and their help in improving the economy in Brisbane. But as soon as the delicious colourful toppings were added to

the rice, the taste of the rice came in different varieties with each having their own inimitable taste. Today people choose to live in Brisbane due to the high advantages in receiving superior education, better employment, trading, and investment opportunities, low cost of living, a multicultural city filled with rich history, better public transport opportunities, has one of the best cargo terminals, affordable housing, good services from the government, clean environment, entertaining recreational activities, and considerably the pleasurable weather in Brisbane compared to the normal chilly climate in central Australia. The astonishing opportunities in Brisbane had caused the vibrant city to develop a strong economy now because of the progressive foreign investment and the global trade. Local businesses benefit from the international companies while working together. The influx of new and advanced technological skills helps improving Brisbane to become one of the cutting-edge high-tech economic systems in the world. The city of Brisbane is busy as a beehive with its focus on the rising economy and as cooperative as an army of ants by their collaboration with other international countries to help them achieve their economic importance in Queensland. I guarantee that anyone will have a success, no matter what country or background youre from, in finding excellent here in Brisbane.

Landscape Over the Years:

These pictures show how people have changed the landscape of Brisbane. The picture on the left was taken in 1820, and the right picture shows the current Brisbane River. Before, the aboriginal clans of Native Australia had used the vast resources of the Brisbane River, making shing the main traditional coastal activity. Then, the arrival of European settlers in 1839, changed the landscape by building areas for harvesting timber, sugar growing, large plantations, and for grazing and farming activities. The growing demands for coal and seafood, soon lead to the establishment of many ports and harbors, in 1850, located on the Brisbane River. However, there were more changes that have occurred in Brisbanes landscapes, especially in the Brisbane River. The once old Victoria Bridge, which was crammed with vehicles, polluted the clear endless, deep blue sky of Brisbane, leaving the foul scent of gas behind. The old bridge was replaced by the establishment of the 1988 Story Bridge which proved to be a better transport bridge from Fortitude Valley to Kangaroo Point. This also helped prevent trafc congestion, once again retrieving the clean blue skies of Brisbane. Infrastructure in Brisbane was incredible, which built more high-rise buildings, skyscrapers, apartments, port facilities, and also established the Brisbane Central Business District, due to the rising economy and the accommodation of business and industries. It also provided homes for foreign migrants. As the technology developed, there were more research facilities researching to provide a sustainable environment in Brisbane. As you can see from the 2nd picture, the government continued to keep the trees surrounding the river, even though more industries and businesses were established. Brisbane has its eyes set on the economy, but keeps their heart on establishing a better sustainable environment for future generations. Brisbane is a clean and safe environment in which businesses can still succeed. Its amazing how Brisbane has changed their landscape so quickly, like the speed of light, and has impacted the economy greatly. With a fast growth of development in infrastructure and in the economy, who wouldnt achieve their highest dreams? A Short Excerpt from a Fascinated Tourist:
WOW, BRISBANE WAS ONE OF THE MOST EXCITING JOURNEYS WE HAVE EVER EXPERIENCED FROM OUR LIFE. I WILL NEVER FORGET THE FRIENDLY WELCOMING PEOPLE OF BRISBANE; THEY ALWAYS HAD A HUGE SMILE ON THEIR FACE, AND ARE ALWAYS POLITE TO TOURISTS. WE CAME IN A TOURIST GROUP, AND WE WERE SHOCKED THAT THE TOUR GUIDE WAS AN AUSTRALIAN, BECAUSE THE GROUP CONSISTED FROM A RANGE OF NATIONALITIES, AND WERE EVEN SURPRISED, BECAUSE THE TOURIST GUIDE KNEW HOW TO TRANSLATE AND SPEAK IN DIFFERENT LANGUAGES! THAT REALLY SHOWS HOW MULTICULTURAL BRISBANE IS NOW THESE DAYS. WE ESPECIALLY ENJOYED RIDING THE CITYCAT, AND WITNESS THE MANY LUSCIOUS SIGHTS OF THE SURROUNDING AREAS OF THE BRISBANE RIVER, AND WE ALSO SAILED ACROSS MORETON BAY, WHICH WAS ONE OF THE BEST WHALE-WATCHING PLACES IN THE WORLD. WE WERE SO LUCKY TO COME IN THE PERFECT TIME OF THE YEAR TO OBSERVE THE HUMPBACKS GLIDE ACROSS THE BEAUTIFUL, DEEP BLUE OCEAN OF MORETON BAY. COME TO BRISBANE, IT WILL SURELY SATISFY YOU! ~ ANGELICAS GRANDPARENTS

WHAT A PROUD CITIZEN WOULD SAY:

As a proud citizen of Brisbane, I originally think Brisbane is one of the many wonderful cities that have cherished throughout the years and have kept their nations treasures. Brisbane is lled with nightlife activities, and I remembered so clearly, I was walking up the alleyway down in Spring Hill, just after sunrise when the sky turned dark, then suddenly all the torches and lamp posts shined vibrantly, glowing with intense colours, which made the whole area scattered with multicolored lights! It was like walking down and visiting your favourite store on Christmas Eve! I noticed not only the lights illuminated the area, but even managed to cheer up and put a smile on peoples faces! Imagine the nightlife here in Brisbane, if one area had this much lights, think of how colourful the rest of the city is! I also nd it very astonishing of how many parks are located on the riverside, and the suburban areas here are very spacious, you can always breathe the clean fresh air! The museums here are different and unique- and are taken care very well, and every time I visit the museums, I dont get sick of learning the rich old history and culture of Brisbane! Oh how much I want to go back there! ~Gabby Callow

AN INTERESTING HISTORY...
yoto used to be known as Heian-kyo, capital of Japan. The streets were laid out in a grid pattern, modeled by Chinese Tang: Changan, now known as Xian. It served as home to the imperial family from 794 to 1868, when the capital moved to Tokyo. Although Kyoto was the capital, it wasnt really the focus of Japanese political power. Then everything changed in 1467, when Kyoto got increasingly isolated from the mechanics of political power and the Onin War started. It started out as a conflict between the brother and heir of the shogun. During this time, military families or shogunates primarily ruled Kyoto. The political business started to be done elsewhere. The Onin War was one of the most destructive wars Kyoto has seen. Samurai battles filled the streets. Nobles and religious people often took part in these battles. Nobles homes were transformed into fortresses. Buildings were burned during the fighting and Kyoto was changed.

A beautiful scene taken in Kyoto, Japan of the Golden Pavilion.

As a result, the city of Heian-kyo, or Kyoto is now a very different city. It didnt recover until the mid-16th century. The city was burned down and many people departed like birds in the winter. The 16th century brought new hope for the future with the building of

new streets and buildings in central Kyoto. Now, Kyoto flourishes as one of the three major cities in Japan, the others being Osaka and Tokyo. Kyoto is now thriving as a beautifully changed city, now with new architecture that brought the birds

back to old nests.

Where is Kyoto?
It rained one and a half of the days I was in Kyoto this past year, and I found it to be utterly miserable. The attractions were still relatively crowded (I think it was a holiday weekend), and while it was easy to get umbrellas we were just soaked all the time. Wet wet feet, which we had to slip in and out of shoes all the time. Waiting in the rain for the bus. Trudging through the rain. It wasn't torrential by any means, but it was the kind of steady, moderate rain that just wears you down after being out in it for a few hours. You are going to be doing a lot of walking and bus-riding in kyoto unless you are rich enough to afford taking taxis everywhere ($$$$). It's not like NYC where you really can get out of the rain into the subway (or taxis), under overhangs, into and out of shops and big indoor attractions. The best attractions in kyoto are outside, gardens and such. Not fun. Do not recommend if you can avoid it.

SLOWLY CHANGING FOR THE BETTER...

he city of Kyoto was established in the 7th century on November 8, 794 A.D. It was located in the central part of Honshu, where the construction started from the imperial palace outward, demonstrating the importance of the city. Emperor Kammu, the emperor at the time, founded it. Kyoto was made the imperial capital of Japan. Many Buddhists came because unlike Nagaokakyo, Heian-kyo or Kyoto permitted Buddhist temples to be constructed. People also moved here because they felt safe living in the capital of Japan, so close to the imperial palace with mountains on three sides. " Kyoto has many video game manufacturing opportunities. It is, after all, headquarters to Nintendo, Intelligent Systems, TOSE and many others. There used to be many kimono weaving and sake brewing in Kyoto as well. Kyoto is right by a water basin, one of the resources there. There are many information technology careers that you can nd in Kyoto nowadays. Some people choose to live here to escape the busy, noisy cities. Its also cheaper to live in Kyoto, although there are many housing options and you can cycle around the scenic town whenever you want. Personally, I would want to live here and enjoy the freedom like the wind, never to be captured. " As of August 11, 2011 there are 1,473,746 people who reside in Kyoto, many of them

Japanese, American, Australian, British, Filipino or Swiss, like a jumbled up bowl of noodles. The main local religions are Buddhism and Shinto. Even though Kyotos language in also Japanese, it has a much dierent accent than in Tokyo. Kyoto is historically known as the largest city in Japan, with its population staying steady in the prewar years, but ever since 1947, its population has declined as fast as a rocket. Today, 10% of its population is made up of students. " To sum it all up, Kyotos population has been declining, starting from 1947. People came to Kyoto because of the safety of the mountains and the construction of Buddhist temples, unlike the old unprotected capital of Nagaoka-kyo. It is a very good place to be to look for video game manufacturing jobs. If you are interested in kimono weaving or sake brewing, this is a place to go as well. Kyoto, overall, has a very interesting population.

" In the 7th century, they nally reinforced the bridge with new concrete supports and xed the drainage system as well. The water in the river makes the whole place the Garden of Eden. " Now that oods are barely a threat in the Kamo area, people are no longer frightened of water and instead believe it to be peaceful. They now have water to enjoy in the river below. The most important thing this shows me is that ever since before, oods were a threat and people always found ways to be at peace in the end. The imperial palace is safe from harm, for now.

OLD A ND N EW

KYOT O

he city of Kyoto is much dierent than before. The government had building projects for transportation and tried to x the ever constant threat of ood to the imperial palace. This threat caused them to reinforce the Shijo Bridgein the Kamo area, which both helped the transportation system and the threat of oods.

If your choices are June, July or August, you had best choose June, as July and August are very very hot. It's really supposed to rain every day during the rainy season, but climate change has really aected the weather, especially over the past ten years. If there's rain, there's more of it. If there's no rain, it's very hot. I visited family near Kyoto for the month of June last year, and it rained quite a bit. Earlier in the month, sunny days averaged in the mid-20s. Towards the end of the month and the beginning of July, the temperature remained constant at about 30 degrees, and it was very humid. We had a car, so traveling around in the rain wasn't a problem, although our feet would often get soaked from just walking in the rain. We visited Nara in the rain (it always seems to be raining when we go there), which was not ideal, as Nara is intended for walking. Anyway, just take an umbrella and a towel to wipe o the sweat. Try to get a good view of the green green hills by traveling to Uji or Ohara or Enryakuji.

It is said that inhabitants of Kyoto pride themselves on being the source and torchbearers of Ja panese culture. Though their manners are gentle and soft-sp oken, you can easily nd yourse lf in a x if you do not carefully read between the lines of what they say- though this is on ly a generalization!

Landmarks:

POPULATION OF CANBERRA
The city of Canberra was established on March 12th, 1913 by Walter Burley Grifn. He was an American Architect from Chicago. Walter Burley Grifn was the federal director of design and construction. Canberra is located near some lakes. That is helpful for the people that live in Canberra because you can get food from the lake; like sh and fresh water. In the past people came to Canberra for mining. Australia was also a place that the prisoners of England got sent to. The population of Canberra is about 347,000 people. The major nationalities represented are almost all races like Asians, Americans, Europeans, and Africans. They speak English, and Australias constitution forbids state religion and the most common religions are; 1st: Christian, 2nd: Roman Catholic or Protestants. The crimes affect almost 2000 out of 100,000 people. Canberra was selected among 23 cities to be the capital city because of the Canberras good water supply, and land thats perfect for a garden city. And it was perfect for them, because before Canberra was a blank, plain desert. Canberra has 4 distinct seasons, making it ideal for people. Today, Canberra houses the history of Australia, making tourism, a good source of income of the city.

History Of Canberra
Canberra had been nonexistent more than a century ago. It also wasnt the original capital city of Australia. When Australia people began to working on the city around the early 1900s, Canberra was just a piece of a promising land. And it was perfect for them, because before Australia was mostly just a blank, plain, desert that people would visit sometimes for miming. Part of Canberra was also used from prisoners from England. Everything had already been gured out, the location, the plans for the city, and even the name. But then, everything got disrupted just before the outbreak of World War I, which continued until World War II. The cause as mentioned, was two big wars that changed not only Australia, but also rocked the whole world, World War I & II. The wars werent against a small country against the other, but it was almost the whole world against each other, which was why the World Wars made huge impact on other countries. Some countries that werent part of the war tried to help a country, then the other country would get mad and throw bombs or do things that would affect the country in a bad way. World War I, and World War II caused a delay in progress for Canberra. Things such as changes in the government lack of money slowing the progress of the city even more, and several works being undertaken. The other cause was also a lengthy period of stagnation in development. But their effort of building the city werent put to waste, as right after World War II, they started working on their dream city, which still stands tall until now.

Lake Burley Grifn is a manmade lake that was proposed by Walter Burley Grifn who was the winner of the National Capital Design Competition in 1912. The lake was made for public recreation, and tourist attraction. The lake is now also used for sailing and canoeing, being enjoyed by Canberra citizens. Lake Burley Grifn was chosen from the National Design Competition in 1912, as mentioned and the construction of the lake was initiated in 1960 and involved the building of Scrivener Dam. The lake began to ll in 1963 and was nished being lled in 1964. However during the recent years, a lot of structures are being built around the lake for the structures benets. For example, for advertising the place. Structures such as, car parking lots, condominiums, residences, and highrise buildings destroy the lakes natural landscapes. People will not feel the tranquility with the buildings surrounding the lake.

Tokyo Past To Present Tokyo used to be a city of great leadership, power and strength, defeating every force that came in their way. Their navy completely destroyed the Russian navy using their advanced technology and skill. Tokyos military was very German, their air force very American and their navy very British. For the Japanese it was their key to power and the perfect combination to become the greatest rulers of all time.

Then everything changed world war two happened and Tokyos forces were starting to fall apart. But they fought back. They were even part of the axis powers giving Japans army a jumpstart in the massive war that was now going on. Tokyo was firebombed in April 1944 by the U.S. air force it was like a tsunami of fire sweeping across Tokyo. It left many citizens devastated and It was estimated that around 100,000 people died and 125 people were wounded and to make matters worse

about 1.5 million people lived in the burnt areas. It was one of the most destructive and most devastating bombing of WWII. But despite the firebombing Tokyo is now fully rebuilt. Tokyo was strong and recovered or replaced most of the burnt buildings and artifacts. It was a great example of strength and perseverance that Tokyo can display during tough times and destruction. Tokyo recovered to be one of the wealthiest and most successful citys in the world.

Melbourne is an iPad, with more apps being downloaded to a mammoth collection. Because of the Gold Rush in the 1850s, Melbourne became a wealthier city, thanks to trade, expansion of the city, savings, investments and more. That is what started Melbournes growth from its old, small town. Today, people come to Melbourne to get education, work, transport, for recreation, and for a fresh water source. But Melbourne didnt start making a city from the Gold Rush onwards. It started off as an old English town, with fresh, green pastures and sheep surrounding 13 buildings like the town in Rango. However, Melbourne is now more established, added new facilities, and also grown in architecture. However, the feel of 1800s-1900s architecture still lingers, still showing off its elegance. To sum Melbourne up, it is the evolution of a computer: old machinery and basic programs to new applications and complicated bits and pieces that make up the device.! ! .

Y E A R S AG O. . .
Melbourne used to be all fertile land and pastures. In June 1835 a man named John Batman who was in Van Diemens Land (Tasmania) tried to start a colony on the coast where Melbourne is located now. However, the governor of New South Wales (NSW) refused because he feared a problem if a second colony was made. Batman however, went anyway and bought about 240,000 hectares of land from the Aborigines in exchange for some tools, our, and clothes as payment. The NSW hierarchy tried to prevent the colony, but was too late. Many people, mostly farmers, came over the Bass Strait from Van Diemens Land, and soon, the colony of Victoria was made. Then everything changed. In the 1850s, gold was spotted at a place called Sandhurst. What was called the Gold Rush had begun. Soon, everyone seemed to hear about it Melbourne was never the same. The population shot up from 80,000 to 300,000 because of new families settling in, which shaped Melbournes population. Food, houses and equipment were all sent to Melbourne for the miners as they searched for gold. The steps were made for Melbourne to become Australias nancial centre. The value of imported goods became 18 million pounds, and more than 100 million worth of gold was mined from the land. Melbourne became more populated, full of eager international miners and their families dreaming of digging up gold, which helped form Melbourne into a multicultural city. The gold and money Melbourne and their people received, made Melbourne a wealthier city because of trade, investing, savings of money, starting up businesses, helping the community expand to greater heights. As a result, the city of Melbourne is now a multicultural city. Migrants from Europe, particularly Italy, Greece and Croatia, came to live in Melbourne mainly because of the Gold Rush. The migrants then established their families there, which populated Melbourne. Many of those migrants have introduced food, activities and traditions that Melbourne adopt and use. Melbourne is also regarded to be Australias top sport city. The Olympics had been hosted there in 1956, making it the 1st city in Australia to host the event before Sydney. Melbourne is known to be more rened than their northern neighbor Sydney and has some of the best restaurants in the country based there. The city has been described as the Paris of the Pacic with 19th century buildings mixed with towering skyscrapers. Many multicultural cafes, started by the migrants have shaped the reason why Melbourne is multicultural, particularly Lygon Street. The city is quickly becoming more urban than other cities in Australia. More suburbs have been formed, and now surround the city, with roads and the subway connecting it all.

A Personal Anecdote from a Parent:

In March 15 2009, my family and I were going to my birthday lunch!! I was told once we got into the car, to shut my eyes. I was feeling a bit sad because nobody had wished me happy birthday except my wife and kids. Anyway, I shut my eyes while we headed to our mysterious destination. Once we had parked the car, they guided me through the entrance with my eyes still shut. You can open them now, I heard. And so I did. Imagine my surprise when I saw my family, extended family and friends all gathered at a restaurant I had never been to before. The pieces came together: this was a surprise party!!! I was amazed and surprised about how secret this party had been organized and spread to the guests. As I walked around, many people I knew came and wished me happy birthday!! We stood and talked, then sat and eat a lovely birthday lunch. Then the cake came and it was beautifully presented. I was delighted when everyone sang happy birthday. It made my day!! The cake was yummy!! As people left later on, I thanked my wife for arranging a great function. I was pleasantly surprised by the turn of events!!

THE PEOPLE
Melbourne was established in June 1835. It was located near the Port Phillip Bay and Yarra River on the south east coast of Australia. In June 1835, John Batman bought 240,000 hectares of land from the Aborigines. The NSW governor tried to prevent a second colony, but failed when many sheep farmers arrived with their sheep searching for new pastures, which helped Melbourne attract people into their colony. The sheep happily settled in like kids eager to play a new XBOX game or iPad app. In the past, people came to Melbourne because of the gold rush which was a huge contributor for Melbournes development, which led it to become Australias nancial centre for sometime, and that it had a fresh water source. They currently have a world-class port, have set up transport (e.g. trams, trains), and still have a fresh water source, which is a reason why the location of Melbourne is important. Today, people come to Melbourne because you can be educated, get work, for recreation, a fresh water source, and there is transport. Also, there is a world-class port, which is good for traders. Melbourne is also a food, cultural, shopping, art (architecture) and sports hub in Australia. That is all the resources and opportunities in Melbourne. Some of the major industries include automotive, manufacturing, ICT (Information and Communications Technology) and Tourism. Automotive is an industry all around Victoria, with carmakers Holden and Ford the biggest. Manufacturing is also in and around Melbourne (also in Victoria, state of Melbourne) and is big because of containing a freight and logistics hub. Some examples include marine, defense, automotive and others. ICT has 1/3 of their workers employed in Victoria and more than 60,000 are employed in IT. It is a big industry because Melbourne has established a strong research and development base (R & D). Lastly, tourism is a big industry because it helps the economy. 18,000 people were employed from 2008 was an effect of tourism when tourists spent $9.5 billion (ASD) in that same year. 24% of that total was from Asia (excluding Japan and China). The big businesses in Melbourne have their headquarters here. They are Telstra (ICT), BHP Billiton (mining) and National Australia Bank (NAB). These are the main industries and businesses in Melbourne. The population is 4.007 million as of June 30, 2011. The major nationalities are NZ, Korea, Italy, and Somalia, to name a few. Melbourne is represented by more than 140 nationalities. That is like having 200 ice cream avors in an ice cream van. 30% of the population is Catholic and 7.5% are Buddhists, Muslims, Jews and Hindus. The main language is English. The median age of the population is 28 (2006), and 41.7% of residents are born overseas. The amount of international tertiary students residents is 21,584 (2009). That is some interesting information, and population demographics of Melbourne. The most important thing I learnt about the population of my city is that the major industries are automotive, manufacturing, ICT, and tourism. I didnt know how important these industries are important to Melbourne, particularly its economy. They are what powers Melbourne and help the city redevelop. It is like guinea pigs spinning a wheel for electricity. Some of the population demographics are also very interesting. They show how Melbourne seems in the statistics. This is, the population of Melbourne.

There are 91 oors, and 13 elevators going to be the fastest in Australia, at a rate of 9 oors a second. It is located in Southbank and is the 78th tallest building in the world. 9. Royal Melbourne Zoo The Royal Melbourne Zoo was Australias rst zoo when it opened in 1862. Albert le Souef was appointed Director in 1870, and he acquired monkeys, lions, tigers and more. He also made picnic areas for the public. Later, the zoo started to divide into zones, for animals that share a common habitat. The award winning Trail of the Elephants is a highlight of the zoo. This year, it will celebrate 150 years. 10. Melbourne Aquarium Opening in 2000, the Melbourne Aquarium has won many awards, including the 2011 Victorian Tourism Awards. With four amazing worlds to explore, including sub-Antarctic Gentoo, and King Penguins, Melbourne Aquarium is one of the best aquariums in Melbourne and Australia.

These pictures show how people have changed the landscape of Melbourne. Before, in the year 1836, Melbourne was like an old English town with only 13 buildings made from slate and turf. There were lots of green pastures for sheep, and it was suitable grazing land. People came in hopes of becoming pastoralists and wanted to emulate success of the sheep farmers. Another reason people came to Melbourne was because there was not enough land in NSW and Van Diemens Land. The population was 16,671 people in March 1841 a few years later. Then around the years 1850 1860, humans changed the landscape by building solid buildings about 4 stories high. They towered and lined the Collins and the Bourke Streets like gods guarding the streets and people. Banks, ofces and clubs were all designed as reinterpretations of villas, temples and palaces. The 1st railway was also built to help people travel back and forth from the elds and to the city. They did this because many migrants and locals were coming in town for the Gold Rush, which lasted for 10 years. Today, because of this change, the city of Melbourne now has the 1st electric tram service and the 1st suburban train service. They also have hosted and still do, the Australian Open Championships. Heritage buildings were at one point under threat of demolishing for modern ofces to be built in their place. It was like saying: We are sorry. We are replacing you with the future. Saved from that fate includes Flinders Street Station. The Crown Casino, and the Melbourne Museum, were all built and formed to give Melbourne entertainment. All of this was done in the 20th century. ! The most important thing I learned about the changing environment in my city was that Melbourne was not all bright lights, big city. It started off as an old English town, with fresh green pastures and sheep everywhere like the town in Rango but with green pastures surrounding it. Slowly, it became the city it is today. Comparing the city then to now, it is like a Ferrari compared to a beat up minivan.

Historical Disaster
Osaka used to be, and still is A city of people contributing to the World. It was in the center of the Western Japan. Osaka had limited consumption of food during WWII (World War two) because Osaka had its economy affected. Before and after WWII, Osaka had lots of trading, even though 27% of buildings were destroyed by the War. Osaka was still an economic powerhouse due to the amounts of factories, electronics, and the hi-tech products. Then everything changed when the three sea plates came apart and caused an Earthquake as if three pieces of puzzle were out of position. It came apart because every year about 10cm, The Eurasian Sea Plates moved lightly. The earthquake happened when the plates couldnt hold any more. The three plates were called The Philippine Sea Plate, The Pacific Plate and The Eurasian Plate. Unfortunately, the three plates were connected near Kobe city, which was the epicenter of this earthquake. Also the molten magma, which forms the Japanese island arc released by the melting Philippines Plate, can be the cause of this earthquake. Earthquakes are very common in the Japanese arc because of the contention formed by the Philippines Sea Plate and Eurasian Plate smashing along this destructive boundary. Thats why an earthquake is very common to Japan. Osaka was badly damaged by the earthquake even though it wasnt the epicenter. The earthquake was to be called, The Great Hanshin Earthquake. It happened on January 17th Tuesday 1995 5:46AM. It lasted for about 20seconds, and its Richter scale was 6.9. But in Osaka, it was around magnitude 4 to 5. As a result, the city of Osaka is now restored and lots of trading is going on. They rebuilt the city as a modern commercial and industrial city. But the way of getting here was very long and hard. 25,000 people were injured, 300,000 of people were displaced, and the rescuers saved 35,000 people. There were more than 100,000 buildings destroyed by the earthquake. There were lots of damages on roads, houses, factories, and infrastructure (gas, electric, water, sewerage, phone cables, etc). And the earthquake itself caused damage of about 132 billion dollars, which was about 2.5 % of Japans income. This earthquake was recorded as one of the most expensive natural disasters in the whole world. But Osaka recreated its self by the restoring and the citizens help. The citizens learned and considered the importance of their city from this earthquake. The citizens learned and considered the importance of their city by this earth quake. Nowadays, Osaka is one of the most crowded cities in Japan, with lots of Japanese and foreigners. But both Japanese and foreigners know the history of The Great Hanshin Earthquake.

These pictures shows a street. with many shops. The rst picture shows the street when the Earthquake started, and wasnt that big. The second picture shows the street after the Earthquake. The effects were terrible here.

Osaka Port Time Line

These pictures show how people have changed the landscape of Osaka Port. Before, in the 5th to 6th century, the Bay where Osaka Port takes place was a place filled with of rice farming and gathering sea oysters from the Osaka Bay. Then, around the 6th century, people started letting ships come in to the bay and eventually, it became a connection from Eastern Japan to the Western Regions such as Korea and China. It was made by law in the year 1889. As WWI(World War One) started, the Port became much successful and Osaka Port was leading to a success about recreating Osaka Port. But in WWII, Osaka Port was badly damaged. It was destroyed so badly. Companies that were responsible for the Port, which was the Osaka Port and Harbor Bureau said that it is almost impossible to recover the Port. But they noticed how important it was to the local economy. And so, they started to rebuild the Port. People in Osaka built the Port because they wanted to make Osaka the center of trading. Today, because of these changes, the lots of trade at in the Port, travelers and foreigners, including entertainment, and its like a bowl of fruit salad with a variaty of fruit in it.

The rst picture is Osaka Port in 1876. The second picture is Osaka port now. city of Osaka is now one of the biggest and populated cities in Japan, filled with

ISSUE NO. 1

A Story from Anika Lewis I went to Jakarta for a touch rugby tournament playing for ISM. When I got there, I thought that the airport was so unique, it was like a house. The team and I were housed by some JIS (Jakarta International School) students and their families. Going to and from JIS, there was a lot of really heavy trafc. Since I was with my friends, it went by really quickly. During the touch rugby tournament, it rained very heavily, which made it even more fun and exciting. Jakarta is a very hygienic city with ginormous malls, like the one I went to after we got home called the Pondok Indah Mall of PIM for short. When we went, we saw so many nice and cultural people. It was pretty hot in Jakarta, other than the times when it rained. In the end, ISM came 2nd and JIS came 1st, which was ok. My trip to Jakarta was a blast! A Story from Noel Gonzales It was December 2007, I was going to Jakarta for a 2 day business meeting with some of my AES co-workers. (Note: AES doesnt stand for anything.) I remember when I got there. I was so surprised because it was so similar to my home country, the Philippines, than Singapore or Malaysia. I was staying at the Shangri-La Hotel Jakarta. The people there were very friendly to me and were more similar to Filipinos compared to other Asians (physical feature wise). At night I went to go sight-seeing throughout the city. The climate was very humid. I thought that there was some pollution because of all of the motorcycles that were around Jakarta, but other than that, Jakarta was an amazing place, even though I only stayed for 2 days.

Have you been to Jakarta?

Have you ever been to the amazing, bright, bustling city of Jakarta? If you havent, now is the time to go! In the 18th century, Jakartas population had grown as fast as a Ferrari. Currently, Jakarta has a population of approximately 13 million people. I like to think of Jakarta as an ice cream sundae, lled with tons of nationalities, religions and languages. Many of the people that live in this city are there for their jobs and education. The city of Jakarta is so environmentally green; its just like the leaves on a tree. Since the early 2000s, Jakarta has become more modern, that it makes it a very livable and dynamic place. Youll nd many different sights and sounds of Jakarta. I hope that youll experience these things with me!

From the Past to the Present Jakarta used to be a busy part of the last Hindu Kingdom of West Java, until the Portuguese arrived in 1522. The Portuguese had gained a big reputation in the city by 1527, but were driven out of the city by Suntan Gunungjati, the Muslim Saint and the leader of Demak. Suntan Gunungjati later renamed the city Jayakarta which means victorious city. It soon became the capital of the Dutch East Indies. Then everything changed when the Jayakartans ambushed the Vereenigde Oost-Indishe Campagnie or the VOC Fortress backed up by the British in late 1618. This was because more than 60% of Jayakartas population were slaves for the VOC fortress. Jan Pieterszoon Coen provided an

Population and Resources

The city of Jakarta was established in 1950.It was located on the North West coast of Java. This is crucial because its the capital of Indonesia and its one of the most colossal cities in the world. In the past, people came to Jakarta for their jobs, for their government systems, the economy, and to get better education. Today, people arrive in Jakarta for the same reasons and the tourist attractions (landmarks), to learn new things about other cities/countries, to try new cuisine and maybe even to visit the family. Presently, the citizenry of Jakarta is approximately 9 million people. Since 2004, Jakartas citizenry has

CHANGING LANDSCAPES
Before all of this happened, some people say that life used to be much simpler. Who knows what people thought before that? Today, because of this alteration, there are more ginormous building and more fancy shops. Things are more expensive now than they used to be back then. Jakarta has become greener (environmentally) and much more modern. This change has made it a very livable and dynamic place. Modifying the landscape and the environment in Jakarta has changed peoples lives. Lots people like it and lots of people dont, but thats life.

These pictures show how people have altered the landscape of Jakarta. Previously, in 1968, Jakarta was very simple, compared to modern day Jakarta. Then, around the 2000s humans altered the landscape as quick as the speed of light, by modernizing it. For example, there are many building projects that are currently going on. They did this to keep up with the new and certain trends. They wanted to become more modern.

CHANGING LANDSCAPE !

PAGE

These pictures show how people have changed the landscape of Hong Kong

Hong Kong in the 1950s

Hong Kong in the 1960s

Before in the year 1950s, Hong Kong was growing slowly. Then in the 1960s, people fled Mainland China to Hong Kong to escape from Mao Zhe Dong. Because they needed places to work and live, buildings kept being constructed and that changed the landscape. Some other things that changed Hong Kong were the Japanese occupation and the British occupation.
As the people who fled were very skilled, this migration of talent resulted in Hong Kong evolving to be a major place for business. Today, because of this change, the city of Hong Kong is a gateway for business because it opens up many opportunities for trade, investment, and business in general. With Hong Kongs bustling landscape and hard work, Hong Kong is as busy as a bee. Finally as you can see Hong Kong has made a great leap forward from being a growing country to a major place for business opportunities, and rapid growth. I believe the people of Hong Kong have made a great influence on the city. Hong Kong in a way is like a phoenix it was able to rise through the ashes of mishaps and has become an inspirational city for business.
Population

!ong Kong has been a major city for many years. People have said Hong Kong is around 30,000 years old. There are many reasons why people go to Hong Kong; mainly it is for tourism and business opportunities. One reason people move to Hong Kong is for great education opportunities. If you are planning to set up an international start-up company, Hong Kong is rich in people who have an appreciation for business. Hong Kong is a great bilingual city in terms of English-speakers in a Chinese city. Hong Kong is culturally rich as it is diverse. Though main languages are English, Cantonese, and Mandarin, Hong Kong people study many more languages ranging from Asian to European languages such as Japanese, Vietnamese, Korean, Tagalog, Indonesian, and Thai, German, and French. The cuisine is diverse and has earned critical acclaim. Hong Kongs religions are Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism, and Christianity; however, other religious communities are Roman Catholic, Protestant, Mormon, Orthodox, and Muslim. Main industries in Hong Kong are as follows: Manufacturing is at 2.3%, Hong Kongs finance industry is at 25%, trade is at 26.4%, and other services make up 34.6%.In terms of Hong Kongs labor force, those in public administration, social and personal services make up 24.8%, while those in finance, insurance, and real estate make up 18.3%. Retail, accommodation, and food services make up 15.7%, import/export trade 14.9%, transport, communications, and logistics make up 12.6%, and other services make up 10.6%.Hong Kongs rich culture, welcoming atmosphere for the business community, diversity, top-notch education, abundant business opportunities, and wealth of tourist attractions, all make Hong Kong an overall great place to live. Should you find yourself wondering about making a new life in a new place, I would highly recommend Hong Kong. When I lived in Yokohama city...
I was living in Yokohama city for 2 and half year (2005-2008). When I came to first visit it was very different more than the city that I was living before, because before I came to Yokohama I was living in Yamagata city (the place near that had earthquakes last year). Yamagata city was countryside so they didnt have many tall buildings or many landmarks, but Yokohama city has many tall buildings and landmarks. So I was surprising each time when I saw something I didnt see in Yamagata city and I was asking my parent that I was interested in and that first to see. My most interesting thing that I surprised was the big sun set on the ocean. I saw the huge sun set from the bridge called Yokohama bay bridge and I think it was on summer. It was so beautiful! The color was red, orange, yellow, pink, and violet. I loved that huge beautiful sun set. I didnt see that sun set since when I was in grade 3. So I want to see the sun set on the ocean from the Yokohama bay bridge. By Rumi Ito I interviewed my friend who went to Yokohama city. She said when she was living in Yokohama city there was many good department that she can buy delicious food and a bunch of snacks, there are many trees, flower, and grasses even Yokohama city is a big city, and there are many places to play. She said she went to those places many times because she really liked them ! By Miho

Yokohama is a big city that has a beautiful ocean that looks like sappier. Yokohama used to be a very small village that was known by only few peoples like fishermen, but when Commodore Matthew Perry came to Yokohama and forced opening Ports for commerce, in 1853, Tokugawa Shogunate decided to open the port. Then the Port of Yokohama city became famous and the peoples from other countries came to Yokohama city to trade with Japan. So the population increased more and more, then the city became a small fishing village to the largest city in Japan and the population was increased by 400,000 to 2,992,926, in 1985, but now Tokyos population surpassed Yokohama citys Population. When the Population increased more and more the tall building increased more too, so the people can live, work and stay safely. Now Yokohama city is like a blue diamond with shiny blue flower because the ocean became more beautiful like blue diamond and the buildings are shining blue by the ocean. If you are interesting with trading, fishing, shining delicious foods, or the fun activities in Yokohama city, come and visit us! If you not you will miss the whole things that are amazing and you can show every body how amazing Yokohama city is. .

History of Yokohama Changing Landscape

Yokohama used to be a very small fishing village up to the end of feudal period. Japan was strictly secluded and isolated from foreign trade and intrusion until 1853 when Commodore Matthew Perry came and forced the opening of ports for commerce. Then the Tokugawa Shogunate decided to open the port for commerce with U.S. After that, whole Yokohama city changed. Then the Yokohama city changed everything in Edo period to the Taisho showa era because Commodore Matthew Perry forced to opening ports for commerce, under the acceptance of the ruling Tokugawa Shogunate at the Japans southern territory, so America and Japan can trade. Yokohama signed the Treaty of Kanagawa in 1853 to 1854 to Commodore Matthew Perry in U.S. On 1859, the Port of Yokohama was opened. The port, conveniently located with Tokyo Bay and surrounded by a rich assortment of tourist attractions, both modern and cultural, plays a vital role as the gateway port for metropolitan Tokyo as well as Eastern and Northern Japan. As a result, Yokohama became the major port under the Harris Treaty in Japan (1858). port became a trade center for merchants from home and abroad, Yokohama developed into one of Japans largest international cities. The basic municipal services (water, electricity, and gas) were installed beginning in the late 1800s. The population growth began increasing at a faster rate after 1960, and by 1980 the small fishing village had surpassed Osaka to become the second largest in Japan. The most important thing that I learned is that the Yokohama was mostly changed cause of the Commodore Matthew Perry came to open a Japans south territory to foreign trade and diplomatic relations. So the Yokohama port became a major port under the Harries Treaty in Japan. I feel great and happy about that the Commodore Matthew Perry came to Japan and forced to open Japans southern territory, so the small fishing village became to a popular trading city, so that why Yokohama city is so popular!

Now 2012

Past 1901 The citizens in Yokohama city changed the world by WWII, building Port or tall buildings, and reclaimed land on the ocean. People changed the landscape and environment because the Yokohama citizens wanted to built beautiful city and make easier to transport. Yokohama city was small village and they didnt have building that much as now like bridges or man made island. The picture of The Yokohama citys landscape changed by building tall buildings like Landmark Tower; there is a reclaiming Land on the Ocean. Now the reclaiming land is Yokohama Port. This was started by nearly 1868.Now the city is different today because of this change to the environment. There are many tall buildings, big boat, and they are all shiny! The most important thing I learned about the changing environment in my city is that every city is changing city because they want to build, make, or show their city beautiful. I think the people increased so the tall building increased too. I think Yokohama city will change landscape from now and next 10 years the Yokohama city doesnt looks same as this year.

Population
The city of Yokohama was

established in April 1, 1889 by Yonekura Tadasuke. It was located at the beautiful ocean and this is really important for the people who live Japan and the people who came from other countries. This is important for the fishermen and foreigners who come to Yokohama city port. If Yokohama were not located near the ocean, Yokohama city would not have fishing opportunities and not be able to trade with other countries. It would not be a major city in Japan. Thousands of people come to Yokohama city every year. Why do you think the people came to Yokohama city every year? In the past people came to Yokohama city because the people in other countries wanted to trade with Yokohama city and there is a port so they kept the boat at Yokohama port, and the people who live in other cities go to Yokohama city to buy a interesting souvenir from other countries or to use them.

businesses like trading or Nissan and foreigners who are interested in Yokohama and other citizens in Japan want to go there because there is lot of interesting sightseeing tour spotted area in Yokohama city. Topography: Han Gang (Han River) is the longest river that runs in an east west direction through Seoul. It is 321miles (514km), the top of Mt. Namsan you get a birds eye view of the city on a clear day.

History of Seoul
Seoul used to be the capital city of former general Yi Seong gyes empire in 1392. During the next 10 years Seoul became a real city with 100,000 populations. In that period Neo-Confucianism idea of Joseon Dynasty was leading Seoul. Buddhism and Catholicism were illegal so it was send of to mountains and the countryside. Until 1910 Seoul was being controlled by the feudal system of kings, lords, farmers, slaves and outsiders. Then everything changed with the Japanese invasion in 1910.The Japanese took Koreas territory as well as Seoul. They tried to control the territory because they wanted Koreans to speak their language and wanted Koreans to learn and follow their culture The war was being continued for 35 years and in that time Seoul was hopeless under Japanese colonial rules. In 1945 Japanese released Koreans from their unfair rules by losing at the battle between Korea and Japan. During the Korean War Seoul experienced ghts 4 times just to become the capital city again in 1953. As a result, the city of Seoul was totally destroyed. The beautiful palaces were destroyed, and Koreans culture seemed to fade away and never be recovered. Moreover Seoul kept growing rapidly and continuously. I visited Seoul and I enjoyed living in Seoul. I have many memorable experiences that I prefer doing that again! I went to the Kyung Bok Palace, Everland, Seoul aquarium, Korean traditional museum, and whole lot more. The best part visiting in Seoul was going to Everland, which is an amusement park for young people. In Everland there are many fun rides and also I heard that there is a rollercoaster called T-Express the one of the world best and longest ride!! I loved Seoul because there are many places that attract people and also because my friends and families are there! Erica Oh

For example, Antique shops in Insa-dong, The Bukchon hanok Village in Northern Seoul has become a must see place for foreign travelers to see how Koreans lived in the past. Seoul Namsan Tower is one of the famous touring places and you can explore the city by looking at the beautiful view of Seoul. Moreover, it is also known as the place where most of the couples come.

The population is about 10,208,302 in Seoul. Foreigners make up only 2.4% of Seoul. Some major nationalities represented are about 75.5% are Chinese, 5% of U.S, 3.5% of Taiwan, Japan with 2.7%, about 97% are Koreans. The major industries and businesses today include LG group, Samsung, Kia-motors, Hyundai, Manufacturing industries, Construction, Transportation, Accounts, Finance and Banking jobs, Sales and Marketing jobs, Management and Administration Jobs and a lot more. In my opinion, if the population is over 10.3million, it will be effective for the sellers, because if there are many people, you can sell more products, which makes them more efcient of getting wages.

Therefore Seoul is now a city where everything is centered with most modern things and Seoul can give people good opportunities of getting jobs and there are many beautiful tourist attractions that people must see!!! I think Seoul is a perfect place to live, nding jobs, and for touring.

Insadong Street is famous for selling Korean traditional souvenirs and one of the oldest streets that established in the Joseon Dynasty. Also you can observe that many foreigners are coming to this place.

Gyeongbok Palace is the Korean traditional architecture that shows how the Koreans lived in the past and shows the Korean traditions and customs were very important

The World Cup Stadium in Seoul is an enormous place that is always crowded with people during the World cup.

63 Building is the highest building in Seoul. Also the view at night in 63 building, it is fabulous and it will feel like you are in the magical world.

Changing Landscape in Seoul

Changing Landscape The 6.25 War was a massive Korean war between North Korea and South Korea. The North Koreans set the conict on the division of Korea. On June 25, 1950, North Koreans planned to ambush the South Koreans army and quickly headed for the capital city, Seoul. The war seemed endless like the arrival in a Japanese subway train. From that period everything was destroyed and damaged some Korean #1 national treasure such as Namdaemun, the South Koreas Great South Gate. As a capital city, Seoul, a lot of people live there so they had to change the environment for people to live a safe and protective life. Also, they had to change the landscape because, with everything destructed, people cant just live their normal lives with polluted air and radiation caused by bombs. Before people started to change Seoul, the city was horrible. It was terrifying. As people started to collect more resources, the landscape changed. It was greener with more trees, mountains, had tall buildings for people to live and work, and started to become one of the beautiful cities by natural resources. Moreover, it got improved than the landscape during the war. People started to change the environment after 1954 when the war ended and starting to settle

back again like it was before the conict. Seoul today, is very dierent and partially got aected by the 6.25 Korean War. For instance, everything got much developed by getting ideas from the war. Nowadays, Seoul has new buildings, remodeled traditional Korean museums, enough water supplies, electricity and a lot of natural resources. Therefore, lot of the population has grown and has become a very well known city where people want to come at least once in their life.
