Bowl For Kids’ Sake Bowlapalooza
brings teams of five bowlers together
to bowl and have fun, but most impor-
tantly, raise money that goes directly
toward recruiting, enrolling and pair-
ing volunteers with children needing
them most. To make it easy to partici-
pate, we’ve kept the event in April to try
to avoid traveling in bad winter weath-
er. We’re also offering a variety of dates

n April 21 — 1 to 3 p.m., 3:30 to

The event is all about kids. The
more donations bowlers raise, the
more children will benefit by having
a Big Brother or Big Sister in their
lives. Bowlapalooza is the single larg-
est fundraiser for Big Brothers Big Sis-
ters of Newaygo County — be a part of

door prizes and special prizes for top
fundraisers.
For every $30 in pledges raised,
bowlers will receive a raffle ticket for
door prizes and all bowling fees are
waived; for $60 raised in pledges, bowl-
ers will receive a 2012 Bowlapalooza
shirt; for $150 raised in pledges, bowl-
ers will receive a BBBS folding camp
chair; every bowler who raises at least
$350 in pledges will receive a Blu-Ray

SIDNEY — Montcalm Community
College’s Alpha Tau Alpha (ATA) chap-
ter of the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Honor
Society inducted 38 new members during
a formal ceremony on March 2 on MCC’s
Sidney campus.
To earn an invitation for membership
in Phi Theta Kappa, students must have a
minimum 3.5 GPA and have completed at
least 12 credit hours at MCC.
“We are very excited to welcome so
many new members into Phi Theta Kappa.
It’s not easy to balance school, family and
work, but these individuals demonstrate
how hard work and dedication can pay
off,” said ATA Co-advisor Jessica Snyder.
New inductees include Rachel Satter-
lee of Belding; Jessica Bazan of Big Rap-
ids; Judith Miller of Carson City; Paige
Barkley, Emily Carmey and Corinne Spear,

“Alpha Tau Alpha has traditionally
been a high energy group, planning and
implementing activities that benefit both
the college and community,” said Co-advi-
sor Amber Jaramillo. “They set very high
goals for the chapter and do a wonderful
job in reaching their objectives.”

MCC students earn honors at state BPA competition

SIDNEY — Seven Montcalm Commu-
nity College (MCC) students earned high
honors during the Business Professionals
of America State Leadership Conference
at Northwood University in Midland on
Feb. 11, and they will advance to national
competition April 25-29 in Chicago, Ill.
MCC’s Website Design Team earned
first place at the state competition. Team
members include Erica Anderson of
Greenville, Betty Leeuw of Sand Lake, and
Amber Rought of Gowen. The college’s
Video Production Team placed second
in the contest. Team members include
Carmon Bianchi of Greenville, Rebekah
Jacobsson, Everett Schoenborn and Han-
nah Schoenborn, all of Rockford.
Individually, Bianchi earned fifth
place in Desktop Publishing; Jacobsson
placed first in Prepared Speech and sec-
ond in Fundamental Accounting; Leeuw
earned first place in Advanced Office Ap-
plications; Rought took first place in both
Desktop Publishing and Graphic Design
Promotion; and Hannah Schoenborn
placed first in Presentation Management.
MCC Instructor and Club Advisor
Kristen Diehl said this is the seventh year
students from the college have participat-
ed in the competition, and their perfor-
mances illustrate the quality of instruc-
tion they receive at MCC.
“Our students have consistently taken
top honors at the state level while com-
peting against students from four-year
universities,” Diehl said.
The event featured 178 students rep-
resenting nine different post-secondary
institutions from Michigan. MCC was one
of only two community colleges, while the
remaining seven institutions were four-
year universities. Students may select
up to three events in which to compete,
including Financial Services, Administra-
tive Support, Information Technology,
and Management.
“This contest helps our students de-
velop and improve leadership skills that
will be used in the workplace,” Diehl said.
“Advancing to the national-level compe-
tition emphasizes that they are prepared
for a wide variety of business situations.”
Diehl said two MCC students stand
out for their consistently high achieve-
ments.
Amber Rought finished first in each of
the events that she entered, “proving that
her design skills are superb,” Diehl said.
“Rebekah Jacobsson won the Prepared
Speech event last year at both the state
and national levels. She is a very talented
speaker.”

the leading Career Technical Student Or-
ganization for students pursuing careers
in business management, office adminis-
tration, information technology and other
related career fields.

Scholarship Fund (MYLSF) has
awarded more than $300,000 in
scholarships and educational awards
to outstanding youth who have ex-
hibited at the premier livestock
events in the state of Michigan.
To be eligible for either the
MYLSF general scholarship or the
statewide scholarship, the applicant
must be a resident of Michigan and
a graduating high school senior or
a high school graduate continuing
their education at an accredited in-

tion and the Michigan Livestock

the corpus of the fund held at the
Battle Creek Community Founda-

SUMMARY OF THE REGULATORY
EFFECTS THEREOF
PUBLIC NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVE that on March 8, 2012, the Village
Council of the Village of Kent City adopted Ordinance No. 2012-03.01, which
amends the Village of Kent City Zoning Ordinance to provide certain regu-
lations regarding Civic Community Event and Community Special Event
Signs. The principal provisions of the amending ordinance can be summa-
rized as follows:
1. Non-Commercial Banners and/or Seasonal Displays. Section
15.07 of the Zoning Ordinance has been amended to include the use of non-
commercial banners and/or seasonal displays on a temporary basis only if
given prior approval in writing by the Zoning Administrator.
2. Stationary Signs. Section 15.08 of the Zoning Ordinance has been
amended to include permitted billboards and permitted Civic Community
Event signs and Community Special Event signs.
3. Civic Community Event Sign and Community Special Event
Signs. Chapter 15 has been amended by adding Section 15.18 to include
a definition for Civic Community Event signs as a temporary sign for such
holiday parades, festivals and other civic events to promote the Kent City/
Casnovia community or where the Village of Kent City is either a sponsor or
co-sponsor of a civic event. Civic Community Event signs are permitted in
any zoning district subject to several restrictions as listed in Section 15.18.
4. Permits. Property owners permission required.
5. Effective Date. Ordinance No. 2012-03.01 shall become effective on
March 25, 2012.

AN ORDINANCE TO AMEND THE REYNOLDS TOWNSHIP ZONING ORDINANCE TO ADD A NEW DEFINI-
TION REGARDING MEDICAL MARIHUANA DISPENSARIES TO CHAPTER 1 (“DEFINITIONS”) OF THE
ZONING ORDINANCE, TO ADD A NEW AND ADDITIONAL SECTION 2.30 (ENTITLED “PROHIBITION
ON MEDICAL MARIHUANA DISPENSARIES”) TO THE ZONING ORDINANCE, AND TO ADD A NEW AND
ADDITIONAL SECTION 2.31 (ENTITLED “CATEGORIES OR BUSINESSES OR USES NOT EXPRESSLY
DESIGNATED; UNLAWFUL USES”) TO THE ZONING ORDINANCE
THE TOWNSHIP OF REYNOLDS (the “Township”) ORDAINS:
Article I. A new and additional definition entitled “Medical Marihuana Dispensary” is hereby added to Section 1.14 of
Chapter 1 (the Definitions chapter) of the Reynolds Township Zoning Ordinance, as amended, to read as follows:
Medical Marihuana Dispensary: Any business, facility, association, cooperative, location, or operation, whether
fixed or mobile, where medical marihuana is made available to, sold, grown, processed, delivered, or distributed
by or to one or more of the following:
1. A primary caregiver (as defined by Michigan Initiated Law 1 of 2008, as amended, being MCL 333.26421 et
seq., as amended).
2. A qualifying patient (as defined by Initiated Law 1 of 2008, as amended, being MCL 333.26421 et seq., as
amended.
3. Members of the public.
A medical marihuana dispensary shall also include any place, location, facility, or operation, whether fixed or
mobile, where medical marihuana is smoked or consumed whether either three or more persons are present and
smoking or consuming medical marihuana or such medical marihuana smoking or consumption is occurring on
the property of a business, association, cooperative, or commercial operation or facility.
A medical marihuana dispensary shall not include the lawful dispensation of medical marihuana by a primary
caregiver personally dispensing to not more than five (5) qualified patients (as defined by Michigan Initiated Law
1 of 2008, as amended, being MCL 333.26421 et seq., as amended) so long as the primary caregiver personally
delivers the lawful amount of medical marihuana to the qualifying patient where the qualifying patient resides and
it is done in full compliance with not only this Ordinance and any other applicable Reynolds Township ordinances,
but also all applicable Michigan and federal laws and regulations.
Article II. A new and additional Section 2.30 entitled “Prohibition on Medical Marihuana Dispensaries” is hereby added
to Chapter 2 (“General Provisions”) of the Reynolds Township Zoning Ordinance, as amended, to read as fol-
lows:
Section 2.30 Prohibition on Medical Marihuana Dispensaries
No medical marihuana dispensary shall be commenced, conducted, operated, or utilized in any zoning district
or on or from any property within the Township. Furthermore, no person shall frequent, patronize, or obtain or
purchase any marihuana from any medical marihuana dispensary within the Township.
Article III. A new and additional Section 2.31 entitled “Categories or Businesses or Uses not Expressly Designated;
Unlawful Uses” is hereby added to Chapter 2 (“General Provisions”) of the Reynolds Township Zoning Ordinance,
as amended, to read as follows:
Section 2.31 Categories or Businesses or Uses not Expressly Designated;
Unlawful Uses
Any use, use of land, activity, building, structure, or development activity not expressly allowed by this Ordinance
is prohibited, unless the Zoning Administrator finds that the proposed use is identical in character to a use or item
listed in this Ordinance. Uses, activities, enterprises, or purposes that are contrary to, or violate federal, state, or
county laws or regulations, this Ordinance, or other Township ordinances are prohibited. An individual may apply
to the Planning Commission for consideration of an amendment to the Zoning Ordinance to include a proposed
use in one (1) or more of the zoning districts of this Ordinance, either as a Permitted Use or a Special Land
Use. At their option and discretion, the Planning Commission and Township Board may consider an appropriate
amendment to the Zoning Ordinance, but are not required to do so.
Article IV. Except as specified above, the balance of the Reynolds Township Zoning Ordinance, as amended, shall
remain unchanged and in full force and effect.
Article V. Severability. In the event that any one or more sections, provisions, phrases, or words of this ordinance/
ordinance amendment shall be found to be invalid or unconstitutional by a court of competent jurisdiction, such
invalidity shall not affect the validity or the enforceability of the remaining sections, provisions, phrases, or other
words of this ordinance/ordinance amendment, and the balance of this ordinance/ordinance amendment shall
remain unchanged and in full force and effect.
Article VI. Effective Date. This ordinance/ordinance amendment shall become effective upon the expiration of seven
(7) days after the date this ordinance/ordinance amendment or a summary thereof appears in the newspaper as
provided by law.

Over the last few months this has happened to me and I’m doing my best maintain my new information rather that sliding back into

the old thought, but it has made counseling people on diet, nutrition, and exercise very difficult.
We have recently learned that the Apo E Gene controls how the body transports fats. We also know that each of the six Apo
E genotypes is influenced by different types of food and different types of exercise. This means that many chronic diseases are
caused by a mismatch between the body’s genotype preference and the actual food intake and exercise activity that a person

has been doing.
So this means that counseling patients on life style changes can be very precise if we have the Apo E Genetic information. But
I found myself feeling handicapped when I do not have that information. So I have had to revert back to some sort of generic
directions that will have to be satisfactory until a person gets their genetic test.
Exercise has been a topic that I have tried to ignore for most of my career. This was not based on the unimportance of the
benefits of exercise, but my own dislike for what I thought was useless expenditure of energy and a waste of time. However, with

There are two factors. I recently attended a conference on chronic illness and chronic liver disease. Some research was
presented that showed a Frailty Score that determined survival probability. The most important feature of evaluating the Frailty
Score and survivability after an accident, acute illness, or surgery was the amount of lean muscle mass a person carried. The exact

mechanism of this is not yet clear. But, this means that if we can build and maintain muscle mass we can reduce frailty and enhance

The second factor has to do with normal body weight. We know that resting muscle uses only stored fat as its fuel source.
Working muscle uses glucose as its fuel. If we do not eat for three hours, we begin to break down muscle for energy. Some time Cedar Springs
