SIX TIPS ON A TAX CREDIT FOR RETIREMENT SAVINGS
If you make eligible contributions to an employer-sponsored retirement plan or to an individual
retirement arrangement, you may be eligible for a tax credit, depending on your age and income.
Here are six things the IRS wants you to know about the Savers Credit:
1. Income limits The Savers Credit, formally known as the Retirement Savings Contributions Credit, applies to
individuals with a ling status and 2011 income of:
Single, married ling separately, or qualifying widow(er), with income up to $28,250
Head of Household with income up to $42,375
Married Filing Jointly, with incomes up to $56,500
2. Eligibility requirements To be eligible for the credit you must be at least 18 years of age, you cannot have been
a full-time student during the calendar year and cannot be claimed as a dependent on another persons return.
3. Credit amount If you make eligible contributions to a qualied IRA, 401(k) and certain other retirement plans,
you may be able to take a credit of up to $1,000 ($2,000 if ling jointly). The credit is a percentage of the qualify-
ing contribution amount, with the highest rate for taxpayers with the least income.
4. Distributions When guring this credit, you generally must subtract distributions you received from your retire-
ment plans from the contributions you made. This rule applies to distributions received in the two years before
the year the credit is claimed, the year the credit is claimed, and the period after the end of the credit year but
before the due date - including extensions - for ling the return for the credit year.
5. Other tax benets The Retirement Savings Contributions Credit is in addition to other tax benets you may
receive for retirement contributions. For example, most workers at these income levels may deduct all or part
of their contributions to a traditional IRA. Contributions to a regular 401(k) plan are not subject to income tax
until withdrawn from the plan.
6. Forms to use To claim the credit use Form 8880, Credit for Qualied Retirement Savings Contributions.
For more information, review IRS Publication 590, Individual Retirement Arrangements (IRAs), Publication
4703, Retirement Savings Contributions Credit, and Form 8880. Publications and forms can be downloaded at
www.irs.gov or ordered by calling 800-TAX-FORM (800-829-3676).

BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU EXPERT
ADVISES TO LET OTHERS GO FIRST
(NewsUSA) - Sometimes being rst isnt
the best idea, advises Steve
J. Bernas, president and CEO of the
Better Business Bureau serving
Chicago and northern Illinois. According
to Bernas, smart shoppers
should refer to the vast collection of online
reviews covering
everything from hotel rooms to car
dealerships.
No one should make a purchase before
doing their homework, says
Bernas. Knowing what others think
before you buy -- and even knowing
what others think of the place youre
buying from -- can save you from
making mistakes, and more importantly
can save you money.
Bernas concedes that not all reviews can
be trusted, Its possible
for restaurants or online merchants to
write their own glowing
reviews, or for competitors to pan the
competition. I always advise
shoppers to read online reviews to get a
feeling of what people think.
If the majority of reviews are pretty good,
youre usually safe.
Bernas offers sites to help shoppers shop
smartly:
Amazon.com: This site has nearly every
product under the sun, most of
which have reviews. Even if you dont
purchase online, its worth
visiting just to see what others are saying
about that item youre
considering.
BBB.org: The Business Reviews on this
site, based on user comments,
are professionally compiled and evaluated
to provide an
easy-to-understand letter grade of the
business.
Cars.com: Known for their automotive
expert-reviews, Cars.com recently
started asking car owners to write their
own reviews for both cars and
dealerships. Knowing how much to pay
for a car is important, but so is
knowing where to buy it.
CNET.com: If youre into technology, this
is the place for you. Almost
every piece of technology has been
reviewed here, so if owning that
new mobile phone is a priority, make sure
you hear from others before
you sign a contract.
TripAdvisor.com: No hotel room should
ever be booked without rst
consulting this site. Does Ocean View
really mean Ocean View? Find
out from past guests.
Yelp.com: Your guide to everything local.
Yelp provides user reviews
about restaurants, shops and more.
PLANNING FOR COMFORT DURING
LONG ROAD TRIPS
(NewsUSA) - Road trips can provide a
great source of tunes, good
conversation and relaxation throughout
any travel season. However,
long hours on the road can often result in
body aches, poor nutrition
and other challenges for drivers stuck
behind the wheel.
To avoid such pitfalls and make the
experience a bit less taxing on
the body, champion Porsche race car
driver Patrick Long has developed
a set of guidelines for drivers everywhere.
Long, an American Le Mans
Series race car driver who can be in his
car for up to 12 hours at a
time, recommends these tips for any kind
of distance driving:
Fuel-Up: If you pack a small cooler with
water bottles and healthy
snacks like fruits and veggies, this can
deter the temptation to reach
for non-healthy items on the road.
Stability: Stability should be your number-
one concern when taking a
long road trip. Many people stick pillows
behind their backs for
lumbar support, but the main goal is to
always have your spine
straight. Sit with the seat fully contacting
your back; allow the
structure of the seat to do its job in
supporting your spine.
Body Positioning: Maintain proper posture
by not leaning one way or
the other in the seat. According to the
National Highway and Trafc
Safety Authority, a drivers hands should
both be placed on the
outside of the steering wheel on opposite
sides. Long recommends the
9 and 3 hand position. Having proper
position in the car is also
relative to the pedals -- if youre too close
youre cramped. If

OFF THE LEASH
SUB: FRIENDS OF THE DOG
PARK SEEKING $24,000
IN DONATIONS TO START
PROJECT
By Jonathan Eppley
Pioneer Staff Writer
BIG RAPIDS A campaign to bring a dog
park to Big Rapids is seeking
nancial assistance from local dog owners.
Organizers of the Friends of the Big Rapids
Dog Park are asking for
donations from local residents to generate
the funds necessary to put
up fences at River Street Park for the dog
park project. The group has
started a 100-day campaign to raise
$24,000 for the park, where
construction is expected to begin in June.
Just look around on any given day, Big
Rapids is peppered with dog
owners walking their dogs, which is good
for the dogs and good for the
owners, said Mark Brejcha, co-chair of the
Friends group. A dog park
provides a destination for them. It gives
like-minded people a place
to meet. Theres no place in town for dogs
to be off their leash.
The nearly one-acre-sized park will offer
two areas for dogs to run
off their leashes, including a roughly
20,000-square-foot area for
large dogs and a 10,000-square-foot area
for small dogs at the north
end of the park located on River Street
across from Mecosta County
Medical Center. Big Rapids City
Commissioners approved designating the
land for the park on Feb. 20.
The Friends group is seeking donations
through the sale of
personalized bricks, which will be laid in a
welcome plaza leading
up to the park. Customizable 4-by-8-inch
bricks can be purchased for
$50, and larger 8-by-8-inch bricks for $75.
The group also is
soliciting tiered corporate and private
sponsorships for the park.
Other site plans for the park include
benches, picnic tables and a
watering area. A special serenity garden
where pet owners can
memorialize their pets also is in the works.
The citys Department of
Public Works will maintain the grass at the
park.
Donation and brick order forms were
included in the most recent city
water bills. All donations are tax deductible.
So far, the response has been
overwhelming, Brejcha said. Were
excited about this. It is something that is
going to continue to grow
in interest. ... Its going to be the epicenter
for dog owners in Big
Rapids.
The Friends group has discussed the
possibility of confrontations
between dogs and owners not cleaning up
after their animals. Dog
owners will be responsible to police
themselves to keep the park clean
and friendly, Brejcha said.
Dog parks are not 100 percent sterile.
Youre always going to have
some of those instances and it gets down
to the responsibility of the
owner; nobody is going to sit there and let
their dog make a mess with
other people watching, Brejcha said. Its
the same thing with the
dogs ghting. ... Dog owners will have to
be responsible in each and
every situation.
Whats more, Friends group volunteers can
sign up to make sure the
park is clean on a rotating basis.
Well have the Friends of the Dog Park
members watching the park a
family will take the park for one week at a
time to visit it at
closing time and make sure things are
clean and safe, Brejcha said.
Cynthia Glazier, group co-chair and
director of Pawfect Companions
Canine Therapy Group, plans to utilize the
park for socialization and
training purposes for her business. She
hopes other groups will use
the park as well.
Im really excited about the park, Glazier
said. Right now, theres
no place you can legally allow your dog to
play off-leash within the
city limits. The dog park will be a perfect
location for your dog to
release energy and interact with other
dogs.
Dr. Rick Davids, veterinarian at The Pet
Hospital in Big Rapids, is
volunteering his time to support the parks
formation. Through his
practice, he has heard many dog owners
inquire about such a park in
the area. He and his wife, Babetta, have a
dog named Jager, who they
plan to take to the park regularly.
For years, theres been a need and a
desire for people to have a dog
park, Davids said. Its going to be one of
those things that will
add to the amenities that the city already
has. ... As a dog lover No.
1, and a dog owner No. 2, I think this will
be a real asset for the
community where dogs can run off their
leash and socialize with other
animals.
For more information about donating to the
park, contact the Big
Rapids Parks and Recreation Department
at (231) 592-4038.
A STRAINING ISSUE FOR
POSTPARTUM MOMS
(NewsUSA) - New moms are often
surprised when they experience a bout
of constipation after giving birth, unaware
that this is actually a
very common postpartum complaint.
Many women may experience constipation
following childbirth, due to
the slowdown of the digestive system and
temporary loss of muscle tone
in the abdomen. But there are other
explanations. Factors that may
contribute to constipation include:
medications administered for
postpartum pain, prenatal vitamins
continued while breast feeding and
anesthesia administered during labor.
A fear of pushing can also cause a cycle of
constipation. New moms may
be hesitant to strain themselves because
of post-childbirth
tenderness, fear of tearing a stitch or pain
from hemorrhoids.
C-sections can also contribute.
Mothers should know that this situation is
very common. In one survey
of about 1,000 new moms conducted by
Russell Research in collaboration
with Purdue Products, the makers of
Colace Capsules, it was found that
47 percent of new moms experienced
constipation or other digestive
issues after giving birth, and 89 percent of
those mothers experienced
problems with bowel movements in the
days immediately after
childbirth.
There are many ways to combat this issue.
While it may be hard to get
back into gear after the ordeal your body
has just been through, it
may help to exercise a little each day once
you have been told by your
doctor that its okay. Adequate daily ber is
also key to keeping
away constipation. Eating bran mufns,
high-ber cereal and lots of
fruits and vegetables is a great way to
make sure youre getting your
daily intake. It is also important to drink
plenty of uids.
According to the survey, 77 percent of new
mothers with constipation
took a stool softener, such as Colace
Capsules. Since the active
ingredient is docusate sodium, Colace
Capsules help avoid the painful
straining associated with occasional
constipation. Colace Capsules is
the leading product recommended by
doctors and pharmacists to provide
reliable relief. Of course, if you are
pregnant or nursing, you should
consult with your doctor before use, and
remember to tell your doctor
about any other medications you are
taking.
The survey also revealed that a startling 67
percent of new moms were
not warned about postpartum constipation.
For more info, check out
www.colacecapsules.com. Read through
the prevention section to get
tips on natural ways to combat postpartum
constipation.
THE BEST INVESTMENT
YOU CAN MAKE FOR YOUR
GRANDCHILDREN
(NewsUSA) - Grandparents and
grandchildren have much to learn from one
another, and such valuable relationships
should be cultivated. Oxford
University research has shown that
involved grandparents contribute
signicantly to better-adjusted
grandchildren.
The research suggests that children nd
unique acceptance in their
relationships with grandparents, which
benets them emotionally and
mentally. The grandparental bond is built
on communication. In fact,
most children studied did not identify
distance as an important factor
if communication was strong.
Unfortunately, hearing loss is the number-
one challenge to
communication. According to the National
Institute on Deafness and
Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD),
age and hearing loss are
strongly related -- 30 percent of seniors
from 65 to 74 years old
suffer from a hearing disability. For adults
75 years of age or older,
hearing loss jumps to 47 percent.
It doesnt take a PhD for my patients to
understand the many costs of
hearing loss, says Sreek Cherukuri, MD, a
certied ear, nose and
throat physician based in Chicago, Ill.
Beyond emotional well-being, even
something simple like taking the
grandkids to the pool can turn dangerous if
grandma cant hear
possible cries for help. Driving puts the
children at risk if the
grandparents cannot hear oncoming trafc
or car horns.
The NIDCD reports that only one out of
every ve people who needs a
hearing aid actually wears one. This is
largely due to the extravagant
cost of most hearing aids.
I found that I saw too many patients with
hearing loss going home
without a solution because they couldnt
afford hearing aid prices,
says Dr. Cherukuri.
Cherukuris response was to develop
inexpensive but effective hearing
aids. With todays technology, a quality
hearing aid shouldnt cost
more than a digital camera or iPod,
Cherukuri says.
MDHearingAid, found at www.
mdhearingaid.com, isnt just a reliable
source for affordable hearing aids, its also
a good source for expert
consumer information.
You should see a physician and get the
best hearing aid you can
afford. We offer an excellent choice for
those who cannot afford a
custom hearing aid. Seniors should enjoy
the benets of their ripe
age. This includes plenty of quality time
with grandchildren.

efcient alternatives at
