The period of time before the landing a job, most of the respondents or 42.85% landed a job between 7 to 12 months. This was followed by 24.29% indicating that they landed a job more that a year after graduation. Only 17.14 percent indicated that they land a job below one month and 8.57% states that they landed the job between 1 to 6 months. The remaining 7.14% did not respond. The length of employment service of the presently employed respondents was shown as 38 of the respondents stayed in their first job for 1-3 years, while 16 stayed for 3- 5 years. Eleven stayed only for less than 6 months and 5 stayed in more than 6 months but less than 1 year. In their second job, 17 stayed for 6 months but not more than 1 year, while 5 stayed for 1-5 years. In their present job, 38 are staying for 1-3 years and 16 are in the company for more than 3 years now. The study also showed that 28.4% of the respondents attended trainings in different areas. Most of the trainings were sponsored by the company they are working. The remaining 71.6 percent have not attended any advance training. No one from the respondents indicated further studies and reasoned out that their current job indicating 64.29 percent hinders them for further studies. Funding is the next reason indicating 28.57 percent and 7.14% indicated that previous academic performance hinders them to pursue further study The rate given by the respondents to the usefulness of the overall BSME curriculum of RSU for professional work was rated Very Useful except for the undergraduate thesis/ special problems that is rated as Useful.

INTRODUCTION In June 1996, four programs were offered under the Institute of Engineering and Technology of the then Romblon State College. Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and the Bachelor of Information Technology were included in the sole agricultural engineering program of the College. Curricula were formulated for the different programs adhering to the minimum requirements issued by the Commission on Higher Education incorporating other courses as suggested by the Professional Regulations Commission, Organizations. In March 2001, the College were able to produce graduates from the mentioned new engineering programs where seven pioneering graduates came from the mechanical engineering. From then on, roosters of graduates of the ME program continued. The appointment of Dr. Jeter S. Sespee as the 4th College and 1st University President paved the way in the accreditation of the five programs offered in the College of Engineering and Technology. In 2008, the five programs

were accredited to level one. One of the suggestions in Area III which is the Curriculum in the mechanical program is to conduct tracer study to assess the competitiveness of the ME curriculum and the status of graduates, hence this study.

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY This study was conducted to trace out the status of Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering graduates of Romblon State University, the former Romblon State College. Specifically, it sought to determine the status of ME graduates in four areas: 1. Personal information which includes the socio-demographic profile of the respondents. 2. Studies at RSCU in the College of Engineering and Technology. a. b. c. 3. Eligibility a. b. c. d.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE According to the study of Fazna Mohamed in June 2003, the tracer study he conducted in Meldives College of Higher Education Faculty of Management and Computing indicates that the steady increase in the number of College graduates, employment opportunities for students have become very

competitive. In line with the mission of the Maldives College of Higher Education (MCHE) to educate responsible and committed citizens, the College evaluates how its graduates have fared in their employment scene after their training. Routine Alumni Tracer Studies were conducted for this purpose. The graduates covered in the preliminary survey are only for the year 2002 from the Faculty vof Management and Computing (FMC). In his study, it was revealed that the total number of graduates were 43 students. Of this group, 33 students were traced and confirmed with updated

Romblon State University

Page 7

contact addresses. Of the total target group of 43 students, 16 students responded and submitted the questionnaire, which is 37% of the total target group. However, considering the group of 33 students who were actually traced produces a response rate of 48%. The group of respondents comprises 31% females and 69% males. This gender division corresponds with the gender ratio of the total target group, where 60% are female and 40% male. The graduates of FMC who have a job at present are employed full time. Of the 5 graduates who are presently employed 58% of graduates characterise their employment as related to sea, air and land transport, storage and communication sector and other community, social and personal service activities, including legal services sector. Table 3 shows the areas of employment by sector, of FMC graduates. The organisations, companies or institutions, which the graduates are attached, can be characterised selfemployed business, family business, government organisations (GO) or a private organisation. Those 16 FMC graduates who had graduated were asked to estimate the number of jobs they have had as well as how the first major employment was offered since their graduation. It is worth noting that 40% of FMC graduates who are currently employed have directly applied to their employers for their jobs. Servanez J.V., et. al. (2010) stated in their tracer study that the common reasons of the BSEE graduates of the Romblon State University in taking the course is because of the opportunity for employment abroad. Sixty five percent of the BSEE graduates were found employed and 35% unemployed. The common reason of unemployment is the lack of job opportunities with the BSEE
Orley G. Fadriquel Romblon State University Page 8

Mechanical Engineering Graduates Of Romblon State University: A Tracer Study

graduates. The leading occupation among the RSU-BSEE are technician and electrician and most of the employed graduates are working in privates companies in Metro Manila. Employed graduates considered their present job as their job after graduation in college and their primary reasons are salaries, benefits and career challenge and insisted that it has relation to the course they took up in college. As perceived by the RSU BSEE graduates, the college curriculum has relevance, but not much to their first job and the competencies learned in college were found to be useful. The perception of the respondents tpo the prospect of RSU graduates in the job market and for further studies is rated medium. One percent of the respondents did not undergo advance training and 99% did not undergo further studies after completing the baccalaureate degree in RSU and what constrained them from pursuing higher studies includes funding and the current job constrain. Rufon J.F.(2008), in his study Eligibility and Employability of RSC Civil Engineering Graduates states that there were 210 graduates from school year 2001 to 2007. Out of the 210 CE graduates, 147 representing 70% were traced. Of the 147 traced graduates, 90 or 61.2% had no civil service eligibility, 30% are CE board passers and 6.8% had Civil Service eligibility and 2% graduates had both civil service eligibility and passed CE Board Examination. Of the 147 graduates, 83.6% are employed and the remaining 16.4 % are unemployed. Of the presently employed, 50.3% are in private companies whose job is in line with their specialization, 12.9% are in private companies but not in line with their specialization. The remaining 30 graduates are in government agencies with
Orley G. Fadriquel Romblon State University Page 9

11.6% are in line with their specialization and 8.8% are not in line with their specialization. Faminial, M. R. B., et. al. (2009), states the total population in their study was 219 and out of this population, 52.3% were tracked. Most of the traced graduates were female, single and usually between 24 to 27 years of age. Most fo the graduates were from SY 2003 -2004. Prospect career advancement was the main reason why they tool the program. Inspired by a roe model, strong passion for the profession, availability of course offering in the chosen institution were tha main reasons why some of the respondents pursued post graduate studies. Very few graduates took advance studies and training, but most who attended trainings were relevant to their degree and work., for the reason of professional development. Only few of the graduates passed Civil Service examination. The employment rate of the BSBA graduates was 76.65 percent. Most of the graduates were regularly or permanently employed in the private companies within the Philippines, receiving monthly earnings ranging from P5,000.00 P 10,000.00. Most found their job as walk-in applicants after 1 to 6 months of waiting period and stayed for a minimum of one month and a maximum of six months. For those who accepted and changed or quitted in their first job, their main reason was salaries and benefits. The curriculum of th BSBA was reveald relevant to the industry and employability of the graduates.

The faculty of the College of Engineering and Technology, especially the mechanical engineering department would be provided with information on the status of graduates, thus, they may improve their teaching strategies. The curriculum planners, the result of this study will serve as scientific bases in identifying appropriate curriculum that will fit in the demands of the local and global market. Result of this study will guide the BSME graduate with the proper information regarding the employment status that would provide them better insight when they are already at workplace. For future researchers, this study may serve as the basis in undertaking further similar research.

METHODOLOGY The descriptive method was used in this study because this study describes the socio-demographic profiles of graduates and the status in terms of professional eligibility and status of employment.

Respondents of the Study The respondents to this study were the BS Mechanical Engineering graduates of Romblon State University from year 2001-2009. Eighty one (81) graduates out of the one hundred fifty three (153) were the respondents of the study.

Research Instrument The Graduate Tracer Study (GTS) that the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) introduced was used in this study.

Data Gathering Procedure The researchers asked the help of the Office of the Registrar and the Office of the College of Engineering and Technology to provide the list of graduates and their home addresses. Much to the desire of the proponent to trace all the ME graduates but to reach out them was the biggest problem. With this the proponent used cellular phones and internet to trace out the respondents. Research instruments were uploaded in the internet and sent to the respondents. Some respondents who were contacted through cellular phones visited RSU and filled up the instrument. Other instruments were sent through RSU students residing near the vicinity of the respondents.

Method of Data Analysis The data were tallied, tabulated and statistically analyzed. Tables were used to illustrate the data gathering. Percentage. This was employed to determine the socio-demographic profile and the employment status and professional eligibility of the respondents. The formula for percentage is as follows;

Conclusions

Based on the findings of this study the researcher had drawn the following conclusions: 1. Majority of the BSME graduates of RSU are single, male and on the age bracket of 26 to 30 years old. The main reason for choosing the career is the prospect for immediate employment. 2. Most of the respondents are eligible and top most to it is the Registered Mechanical Engineering licensure examination. It also showed that aside from RME eligibility, some are TESDA certified. 3. Majority of the graduates are employed and most of them are permanent with few are contractual or casual. Most of the employed are working as technicians, engineers and supervisors in private and manufacturing companies. It is also noted that most of the graduates consider their present job as their first job. Most of them landed their job between 7 months to 1 year. 4. As perceived by the graduates, the curriculum is very useful to their professional work. 5. The perception of the respondents to the prospect of RSU graduates in the job market is rated medium.

Recommendations Based on the findings and conclusions, the following concerns are highly recommended. 1. Since the leading reason of the graduates for choosing the course was the prospect for immediate employment, the curriculum planner should ensure that updated curriculum be maintained for our graduates to be competitive with other universities. 2. Although the performance of our graduates in board examinations are satisfactory, the university must provide review session so that those that cant afford to review in the city will have the chance to review. 3. It is recommended that the University provides employment assistance to our graduates. 4. Tracer study must be continued to determine if the curriculum is still competitive.
