10 Key Technologies for Language Teachers

This is the handout for a presentation I gave in Luxembourg. It tells you about 10 remarkable tools that we can use as language teachers for basically teaching any language. Each tool provides a description, a link to the tool and step by step videos that take you right through using the tool and how it can be used in a language teaching context 1-Jing
What does it do? Jing is an amazing tool. It is the simplest and most effective screen capture too on the market. Use it for giving feedback to your students, getting students to do speaking activities, getting them to add commentary to videos, pictures etc. The 2 sets step by step video guides give you many ideas for using this site. If there is one tool that I really recommend you incorporate into your teaching then it is JING. Literally hundreds of teachers have contacted me after using this site to say how good it is. 2-MailVu
What does it do? Great website that allows you to record a video email ( you need a webcam and microphone on your computer) You can do amazing things with this tool like getting the students to do speaking activities and then sending them to the teacher. At the end of the videos I explain some of the ideas that I have tested. I really like to do the practice work in the class but allow the students to make their recordings at home and then send to me and we have had a lot of success using this tool. 3. Audioboo is a podcasting tool

What does it do? Get your students podcasting with this simple tool. You can use it from the website or you can download the apps and use it on your Smart phone. It is free for short recordings of up to 3 minutes and they can be added to your blog too. This site has so many applications. Get your students to tell stories, do interviews or create news sketches. If you are a teacher you can give students listening material for before or after the class. 4.Make a movie
What does it do?

This is a fun site for creating mini movies and really easy to use. The students can choose the characters, the music and the context and then write in the dialogue. The resulting dialogue is then played back like a movie. The movie can then be shared on the internet. Students can send it as an email or embed it into their blog.

5-Bubblr/Bookr
What does it do? These are really popular tools with language teachers. They allow you to access the billions of pictures on Flickr and then use them to create really professional presentations where you can t add text. Bubblr produces a Comic Strip type presentation and Bookr produces a Book type presentation Once the students have created their presentations they can email them to their teacher or put them into their blog. Great if you want to get students writing about places they would like to visit or have visited. Also great for getting students to write about famous people or for creating stories. A site that can be used in many different ways. Where can I find it? http://www.pimpampum.net/bubblr/ http://www.pimpampum.net/bookr/

6-Word Sift
What does it do? You can paste text into this site and then press a button. It will produce a Word Cloud that highlights all the main meaning words in the text. But that is not all, you can then look at these words and focus on the meaning of them and see how they were used in the text. This is a great tool and it is well worth watching the step by step guide to see what you can do with the site.

8. MyBrainShark
What does it do? This has quickly become the most popular tool on my website. It allows you to upload videos, Powerpoint, pictures and documents and then add voice to them. It then automatically packs them together and produces a link where you can play back the document and the audio recording together. Great if you want your students to practice doing a presentation and then share it with the teacher. Great if you want your students to do speaking activities or great if you want to create PowerPoint presentations and put them on-line so that students or a wider audience can access them. This site is amazing and if you watch the 2 sets of step by step videos that take you through the site, you will be really surprised what you can do with this site. Where can I find it?

9 . Two great vocabulary sites

What do they do? These two free websites offer picture dictionaries with sound and the second site Learning Chocoloate also includes activities. They are really comprehensive with great sound files that are well recorded and allow students to study vocabulary and here the words. There is content in many languages. Where can I find them?

10 . iTunes
What do they do? There is probably the most misunderstood piece of software on the market and few teachers really understand the potential of it and why they need it. I like this tool because I use it myself for my own studies but also because it is a great resource to direct teachers to. You just need a PC or Mac and you need to download the iTunes software. Then you have access to a vast array of podcasts for learning all sorts of languages. There is no much material here. I use it for my French, Spanish and Chinese and there is loads of content in English too. It is also really useful if you want to learn about technology, internet marketing, playing the guitar. In fact just about anything and it is nearly all free. I like using iTunesYou too, which has lectures from universities from around the world and lots more free content. My step by step guides take you right through the tool. Where can I find them? http://www.apple.com/uk/itunes/download/

Russell Recommendation If you dont know about iTunes then watch this video. It is an amazing tool and one that is not really understood.
