Our Town News: Yorkville

By Sheryl Krase

Mayor Gary Golinski has come to terms with Walker Custom Homes to purchase the Rec Center located in Countryside. Currently, the City leases the facility from Walker Custom Homes, and because the Yorkville does not have a park district, the funding for parks and recreation come from the City. Supporters of the Rec Center point to the fact that it is a nice amenity to have for indoor activities like weightlifting, basketball, and the facility has a community meeting room. The deal must be approved before July so the City can continue to operate. There will be three public hearings on this issue, and City Council will vote on the proposal by July. History of St. Patrick's Day

By Katie Brundridge

Ireland. At the age of 16, he was kidnapped by Irish raiders and taken captive to Ireland as a slave. It is believed he was held somewhere on the west coast of Ireland, possibly Mayo, but the exact location is unknown. According to his confession, he was told by God in a dream to flee from captivity to the coast where he would board a ship and return to Britain. Upon returning in real life, the story goes that he quickly joined the Church in Auxerre in Gaul and studied to become a priest. In 432, Patrick felt he was called back to Ireland, this time as a bishop to Christianize the Irish from their native polytheism. Irish folklore tells that one of his teaching methods included using the shamrock to explain the Christian doctrine of the Trinity to the Irish people.

Little is known of Patrick's early life, though it is known that he was born in Roman Britain in the fourth century, into a wealthy Romano-British family. Patrick's father and grandfather were deacons in the Christian church in

celebrated by the Irish in Europe in the 9th and 10th centuries. In later times, he became more and more widely known as the patron of Ireland. St. Patrick's feast day was finally placed on the universal liturgical calendar in the Catholic Church due to the influence of Waterford-born Franciscan scholar Luke Wadding in the early 1600s. Saint Patrick's Day thus became a holy day of obligation for Roman Catholics in Ireland. The church calendar avoids the observance of saints' feasts during certain solemnities, moving the saint's day to a time outside those periods. St. Patrick's Day is occasionally affected by this requirement, when March 17 falls during Holy Week. This happened in 1940, when Saint Patrick's Day was observed on April 3, in order to avoid it coinciding with Palm Sunday, and again in 2008, where it was officially observed on March 14, (March 15 being used for St. Joseph, which had to be moved from March 19). The secular celebration still took place on March 17. (Saint Patrick's Day will not fall within Holy Week again until 2160.) In 1903, St. Patrick's Day became an official public holiday in Ireland. This was thanks to the Bank Holiday (Ireland) Act 1903, an act of the United Kingdom Parliament introduced by Irish Member of Parliament James O'Mara, who later introduced the law that required that pubs and bars be closed on March 17, after drinking got out of hand, a provision that was repealed in the 1970s. The first St. Patrick's Day parade held in the Irish Free State was held in Dublin in 1931, reviewed by the then Minister of Defense Desmond Fitzgerald. Although secular celebrations now exist, the holiday remains a religious observance in Ireland for both the Roman Catholic Church and the Church of Ireland.

After nearly 30 years of evangelism, Patrick died on March 17, 461, and according to tradition, was buried at Downpatrick. Although there were other more successful missions to Ireland from Rome, Patrick endured as the principal champion of Irish Christianity and is held in esteem in the Irish church. Wearing of the green Originally, the color associated with Saint Patrick was blue. Over the years the color green and its association with Saint Patrick's day seems to have grown. Green ribbons and

shamrocks were worn in celebration of St Patrick's Day as early as the 17th century. The wearing and display of shamrocks and shamrockinspired designs have become a ubiquitous feature of the day. During the 1798 rebellion, to make a political statement, Irish soldiers wore full green uniforms on March 17, in hopes of catching public attention. The phrase "the wearing of the green," meaning to wear a shamrock on one's clothing, derives from a song of the same name. Saint Patrick's feast day, as a type of national day, was already being

In the mid-1990s, the government of the Republic of Ireland began a campaign to use St. Patrick's Day to showcase Ireland and its culture. The first Saint Patrick's Festival was held on March 17, 1996. In 1997, it became a three-day event, and by 2000 it was a four-day event. By 2006, the festival was five days long; and more than 675,000 people attended the 2009 parade. Overall 2009's five-day festival is reported to have drawn close to 1 million visitors, who took part in festivities that included concerts, outdoor theatre performances, and fireworks. Skyfest forms the centrepiece of the festival. The biggest celebrations outside Dublin are in Downpatrick, County Down, where Saint Patrick is rumoured to be buried. The shortest St. Patrick's Day parade in the world is believed to take place in Dripsey, Cork. The parade lasts just 100 yards and travels between the village's two pubs. Predictably, Christian leaders in Ireland have expressed concern about the secularisation of St Patrick's Day. In The Word magazine's March 2007 issue, Fr. Vincent Twomey wrote, "It is time to reclaim St Patrick's Day as a church festival." He questioned the need for "mindless alcohol-fueled revelry" and concluded that "it is time to bring the piety and the fun together."{ Research from Wikipedia}

Mitt Romney for President After 21 debates and looking at the records of all the candidates, I am hereby endorsing Mitt Romney to be the nominee of the Republican Party for President. These are the reasons I believe Mitt Romney will be the strongest candidate to face Barack Obama in the general election. I think we can all agree our number one goal is to defeat Obama in November. National polls continue to favor Romney as being the one who can defeat Obama. Most Democrats readily agree Romney would be their toughest opponent, which says volumes about the other GOP candidates. That being said, lets examine the records and proposals of the candidates. Those who oppose Romney say he is not conservative enough. Look at the following and tell me he is not conservative. As governor, he balanced his budget every year without raising taxes. He used the power of his veto 800 times

http://www.kendallweeklytimes.net/entertainment.php

to cut wasteful spending. He cut taxes 19 times and turned the states budget deficit from $1.2 billion into a $2 billion rainy day fund when he left office. The unemployment rate when he took office was rated as the 50Th worst in the country. When he left office it was down to 12th in the nation, a terrific turn around. He did all this with a legislature that was 85% Democratic. We in Illinois could only hope for a Governor like that. Mitt Romney has proposed to repeal Obamacare, strengthen our military, eliminate duplicate and

wasteful government programs, and secure our borders with zero tolerance for illegals [undocumented immigrants]. On the economic side, he wants to cut tax rates by 20% across the board, eliminate capital gain taxes on middle income Americans, and reduce the corporate tax rate to 25%, making America competitive with other countries. He also wants to eliminate the minimum alternative tax and repeal the dreaded estate tax. Mitt will Cut, Cap, and Balance the budget. He will reform Medicare and Social Security to preserve them.

On the energy front, Mitt is for the Keystone pipeline, which will increase jobs along with weaning us off Middle Eastern oil. Mitt favors opening Americas energy reserves for development. He also wants to shorten the approval for new nuclear plants to two years, which now takes as long as 10 years. He wants to scale back EPA regulations that hinder energy production. He believes government should not be in the business of funding private businesses. Internationally, Mitt is a strong supporter of Israel and will not allow

Additionally, Ill get out and bring you thoughts and research about what is really happening. For example, while the honeybees are in trouble, the warm winter and very early spring have the bees out and about earlier with fewer over-winter losses than in recent memory. However, the same is true of all of the other insects, and we may be in for quite a buggy summer. Visit the old Yorkville Courthouse and see the bug collection in the museum.
