Internship (1 position) Music@Menlo Chamber Music Festival & Institute David Finckel & Wu Han, Artistic Directors Location: Atherton/Menlo Park/Palo Alto, California MUSIC@MENLO, the San Francisco Peninsulas premier chamber music festival, will take place July 20August 11, 2012, bringing some of the worlds leading musicians, students, and scholars to the San Francisco Bay Area for three weeks of public concerts, lectures, and workshops. Concurrent with the festival is Music@Menlos Chamber Music Institute, which offers two distinct programs for serious music students and pre-professional musicians ages 9 to 29. Description As a key member of Music@Menlos photography and videography team, the Photography/Videography Intern will have the opportunity to learn more about what goes on behind the scenes at a major arts festival and to gain valuable, practical skills in live performance and documentary photography. This internship also affords valuable opportunities for professional exposure: selected photos will be distributed to local and national press, posted to Music@Menlos Web site, and kept on file for use in future publications. Use of the photography interns work will be credited. This intern will also assist with videography and learn skills in camera operation, lighting, sound, editing, and publishing online. Responsibilities Activities will include: Capture the entire festival experience in a documentary sense, showcasing the diversity of activities (published and non-published) taking place throughout the festival Attend all festival events and take high resolution digital photographs as set forth in shot lists provided by staff Explore artistic expression in documentary and live performance photography Photograph specially organized photo shoots, as facilitated by festival staff Compile and edit all photographs for Music@Menlo archives to be used in a variety of publications Catalogue image info using easy-to-access formats and naming conventions Assist with the creation of a daily video feature (3-5 minutes) that showcases the festivals diverse activities, to be posted to the Music@Menlo Web site the following day by noon. Content to be reviewed and approved in advance by Marketing Director. Work with Menlo staff to outline filming protocols, particularly relating to video shooting during performances, and coordinate with recording engineer to add high-quality audio to video (when available) Work with Music@Menlo staff to develop the filming schedule/priorities and a video format. (The format will vary based on the daily schedule and artist availability and could take the form of a visual documentary, a short interview with anyone from Artistic Directors to artists to concertgoers, or a daily documentary following the day in the life of a student or artist.)

Qualifications The ideal candidates will have a strong background in photography as demonstrated through a portfolio. We seek someone who has taken multiple courses in photography and is majoring or minoring in photography or photojournalism, or can demonstrate a strong portfolio from work experience. Advanced skills with computers and technology, impeccable attention to detail, and positive energy and a willingness to pitch in and be a team player wherever needed are also required. The position requires flexibility and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment. The successful candidate will demonstrate availability, energy, willingness, and stamina needed to work long days and evenings, including weekends (see more detail below). An interest in classical music or the performing arts is helpful, but not required. In addition, the following qualifications must be demonstrated for this position: Experience shooting high-profile public events, preferably in a performing arts environment Access to basic photography equipment, including: high quality digital camera; a variety of lenses, including a fast 300 mm+ for stage shots; tripod; flash; filters might be necessary for interior shots Ability to handle different lighting situations Proven fluency with Adobe Photoshop Willingness to work long hours; festival events typically begin at 9am and evening concerts and post-concert events often make for late nights Valid drivers license and reliable transportation Sound judgment, tact, diplomacy, and a solid sense of the skills and discretion needed to work with world-renowned professional artists Dates/Work Hours/Stipend Full-time internship dates are July 16 through August 17, 2012. The successful candidate must be willing to work long days, nights, and weekends, requiring physical stamina and endurance. All interns are required to complete a successful background check as required by California State law. A stipend for this internship will be available in the range of $600-750. The successful candidate will be responsible for securing his/her own housing and transportation arrangements in the Atherton/Menlo Park/Palo Alto area.
