AAC Controller

1.

AAC Controller
The AAC Controller is responsible for executing the ACM and VCM functions. ACM (Automatic Coding and Modulation): The ACM function adjusts the code rate and modulation (MODCOD) for each terminal in the satellite network, as a function of the detected carrier/noise level at the receiver (terminal) side. VCM (Variable Coding and Modulation) is a subset of ACM, which sets the MODCOD of selected terminals to a preset value. A specific VCM value is set per each terminal. The AAC executes one or both of the functions based on system configuration and license. The operator can enable each function (or all) only if the respective function is licensed for the AAC server installation. The AAC communicates with the AAC database: This SQL-based database stores the AAC configuration, as well as system log and performance data. Note: In everyday operation, the operator is not required to deal with the database. However, maintenance routines such as backup should take place using standard database tools.

The AAC maintains functional communication with other InterSKY hub components that are not an inherent part of the AAC system. IPE: The IPE sets the coding and modulation of each terminal in the satellite network. The AAC server communicates with the IPE using a proprietary protocol over a standard IP network. NCC: The AAC functions receive data from the satellite network terminals via the satellite hub NCC (Network Control Center). The AAC also sends operation instructions to the NCC and to the satellite terminals through the NCC. The AAC communicates with the NCC using a proprietary protocol over a standard IP network. The AAC control panel comprises a single main window, displaying the configuration settings, the NCC communications and the log files. Additional tabs are displayed below the three major topics on the menu bar.

The AAC control panel has two tasks bars, the Menu bar at the top and the Tabs bar specific to the menu item directly below. The area immediately under the task bar is the Working Window. The system log displays in the Log Messages window. At the very bottom is the Exit button. The menu bar at the top of the console has three functional areas: Settings: specific configuration for the AAC

Figure 2: AAC Control Panel Functions

The Tabs bar sits under the menu bar. The tasks listed here are specific to the function tab above. Unless otherwise specified, the following rules apply for all editable windows. Grayed-out text boxes are read-only fields. Information can only be entered in text boxes that are white. Changing the value of an editable field highlights the field. The highlight holds until the data is saved to the server using Save. Exit: When Exit is clicked the AAC undertakes several tasks before shutting down. Each terminal in the system that is not in VCM mode is configured with the lowest MODCOD in the system. This prevents any terminal from remaining in a high MODCOD after the AAC releases control and the terminal disconnects from the AAC. Only the terminals that are in VCM mode remain in their current state at AAC shutdown. The shutdown process can take several seconds, and in certain cases, a few minutes to complete.

Settings
When attenuation exists at a certain location, the AAC automatically adjusts the MODCOD to assure availability. Each IP frame sent out of the modulator towards a VSAT can have different coding and modulation combination based on the terminal received signal strength as analyzed by the AAC. ACM optimizes high availability at all times using minimum satellite resources. ACM balances the link budget of all locations with an individual selection of MODCOD per VSAT according to local weather conditions and satellite footprint strength for each terminal.

3.1

General Settings
General settings include configuration information, licensing information, and NCC connectivity information. The working area is divided into four corresponding sections. Only the terminal measurements fields are editable. All other fields display configuration information as was set during installation and can be changed only by editing configuration files. Configuration displays the description of the setup, the local IP address, and the application name for the database. License displays the current license key. Boxes to the right of the key are marked with a check mark when the license supports the indicated function. NCC connectivity displays the Multicast IP address and port, and the TCP listening port. This information, during normal operations, is not touched. Terminal measurements allow configuration of the time interval between measurements of the heart-beat of the system, and the number of retries to communicate before switching to the redundant AAC. To display the General Settings: 1. Select SettingsGeneral from the AAC menu bar.

Enabled MODCODs
These MODCODs come preconfigured by Shiron, specific to the client. The operator cannot change these. The MODCODs must match the MODCODs configured in the associated IPE. Note that the terminal can only support 5 MODCODs a time, even if more MODCODs are present. Also, the enabled MODCODs are part of the Shiron Link Budget; selection is not arbitrary. To display the Enabled MODCODs: 1. Select SettingsEnabled MODCODs from the AAC menu bar.

3.3

Satellites
The satellite table holds a list of forward link satellites controlled by AAC. Each satellite contains the satellite name, the corresponding satellite ID from NCC Satellite database, the IPE IP address and the ACM enabled status. In InterSKY version v3.42 only one satellite can be used by the AAC at a time. The AAC must be configured with a satellite ID and modulator. The satellite ID and modulator information must match the satellite ID in the NCC. This allows the AAC to accept NCC messages relating to the specified satellite. When the satellite is not configured in the AAC, the AAC ignores the targeted NCC messages. To display the Satellites: 1. Select SettingsSatellites from the AAC menu bar.

Redundancy Configuration
The two-phase installation of the database and then the AAC results in a two-phase redundancy configuration. When the database is installed the default configuration for the application class AAC and the application name AAC is installed with heartbeats interval of 3 seconds and repetition of heartbeats of 3 times. The heartbeat interval is the amount of time (in milliseconds) the system waits between status checks. The repetition factor is the number of times the AAC tries to monitor the health of the application instance before switching control to the redundant AAC application. During AAC installation an additional checkbox for control redundancy mode usage is included in setup forms. When this box is checked (default value) the default Redundacy.xml configuration file is created for AAC. It is pre-configured for usage of the same database AAC uses. When the redundancy usage checkbox is un-checked, the same file with name _Redundancy.xml is created. This can be used as a basis for customization.

The redundancy_settings include: AppID AppType AppName An internal identification of configuration record. The AAC automatically fills this field on new record created. A type of application (as string). In this case it is AAC. The name of application of previously given type. In case of some number of applications of the same type can co-exist in the system at the same time. For example: AAC1, AACForSpecialClient and so on. This parameter defines the interval between heartbeats in seconds. Each application sends heartbeat as Im alive declaration. This parameter defines which number of sequent heartbeats skipped indicates that the application stopped.
