1. Fedora 10 released, brimming with new features

The Fedora developer community has announced the official 
release of Fedora 10, a new version of the popular open source 
Linux distribution. This release is a promising step forward for 
Fedora and it introduces some important new features and 
technologies that bring more robustness and usability to the 
desktop user experience.

2. Cisco Offers $100,000 Bounty to Linux Application Developers

Cisco is offering $100,000 in prize money to Linux application developers that 
help the networking giant defeat Microsoft in the unified communications market. 
The initiative focuses on network­aware applications written for Cisco’s AXP (Application 
Extension Platform) and Integrated Services Routers (ISRs).

5. OpenStreetMap grows, spawns ecosystem
OpenStreetMap started four years ago in the UK as a project to create a free and editable world 
map. What began as a few geogeeks wandering the streets with their GPS’s has turned into a global 
movement with over 75,000 registered contributors. The database has improved rapidly in quality 
and comprehensiveness, as have the tools and services around it. OSM is becoming a viable 
datasource for complex projects.

6. One billion Mozilla add­ons downloads

The Mozilla add­ons team this past week announced that it had seen its billionth add­on 
downloaded since it started tracking in 2005.

This number only includes downloads from addons.mozilla.org, so the number may in fact be a lot 
higher as add­ons are also distributed through other channels.

7. Disabled Boy Creates Art With Gimp

This young man “Mani” never ceases to amaze me. He attended a screencast introducing free 
software image manipulation software 'Gimp' at the C³ ­ Community Computing Center in 
Bangalore and loved it. Now he raises money by selling the artwork produced using Gimp on 
gnu/Linux operating system to buy new computers for his community center. Talk about free 
software empowering people!
