Functions What do you need to know?

The quadratic function Shape, x axis intercepts (factorising or using the quadratic formula), y axis intercepts (ax+bx+c=0 y axis intercept = c), axis of symmetry (equation given in the formula booklet). This can be used for calculating the turning point / max/min point. You can use to find turning points / max/min as well. REMEMBER if they ask for a co-

ordinate you need the y value as well!! Remember Quadratics are symmetrical through their turning points. This can be used to find the other x axis intercept given one of them. Exponential function y=ab+c key points when x = 0 (y axis) y = a+c - Exponential functions cross the y axis at a+c when x = 1, y=ab+c asymptote = c if a is ve the graph is the same but reflected in the x axis If x is -ve the graph is reflected in the y axis Shapes When b>1 and x is +ve or when 0<b<1 and x is ve

When 0<b<1 and x is +ve or when b>1 and x is ve

Sine and cosine functions asin(bx)+c a = amplitude or acos(bx)+c

period =

(max to max or min to min = 1 period)

c = translation in y axis (vertical) ; the middle of your graph will be at c Remember sin goes through the y axis at the middle, cosine goes through the y axis at its maximum (or minimum if a is negative). Solving equations. To solve the following asin(bx)+c = w plot the graph y= asin(bx)+c, then plot y=w. Select the domain (x values) that you need the solution between and graph it. Find points of intersection see below for how to do this. Use properties of period and reflection to calculate other solutions. Reciprocal graphs y = a0

These have a vertical asymptote when bx+c=0 They will have a horizontal asymptote of y=0 because a fraction can only = 0 when the numerator = 0. Solving points on intersection using your GDC. Plot the 2 graphs set an appropriate window to view them in. Press -2nd Calc 5 (intersection). Chose graph 1 by hitting enter, then graph 2 by hitting enter. Place the curser near the point of intersection you want and hit enter for the solution. Repeat for other points on intersection. Using solve to find points of intersection. You can use solve to calculate where two graphs meet but it will not tell you how many solutions there are or where they are. It will just give the nearest solution to your guess For x= x+4 Make the equation = zero

SOLVE(x-(1/x) - x-4,X,guess) obviously dont put guess in. This is where you put a value in!!! Try other values in the guess. SKETCHING GRAPHS Always label your axis and give an indication of scale. SMOOTH curves!! Show clearly any asymptotes and turning points (values needed for these) Show clearly the axis intercepts. Use a ruler for the axis and free hand for the graph. Draw in pencil!!!

Plotting graphs Label axis - Ruler for the axis Use the correct scale and show this on the axis (usually they will tell you what scale to use). Clearly show the points double check these when you have plotted them (usually 3 marks for all point correct). Join the points with a SMOOTH CURVE. Make sure max and min points are clear and any asymptotes are shown. Take time drawing your graphs as they are easy marks when done properly!!!
