WEEKLY PROGRESS UPDATE 3/19

2nd story half court ^ This experiment demonstrated the difficulty with dealing with wide program plug-ins on the second level. How will the structural support work? Does the band need to expand (the tracks) or not? (probably not). Can the accordion partitions widen to provide extra support? not sure how... access to second levels is also an issue. In this example partitions have been widened to 8.

dimension quick test Testing 6, 12 and 18 deep modules on a 35 wide sidewalk.

Super drafty abstract

WEEKLY PROGRESS UPDATE 3/19 scales. Finally, mobile and temporary strategies foster community involvement and a sense of ownership, benefiting both the city and individual neighborhoods. As a notoriously troubled neighborhood with high vacancy rates and a history of revitalization efforts, San Franciscos Mid-Market district provides a challenging and relevant site in which to play out the possibilities of this proposal. These ideas are tested through an exploration of flexible space subjected to the constraints of the sidewalk.?? (questioning the limited definitions of street-sidewalk-building and seeking ways to thickening them and finding ways to occupy them in order to overcome) A flexible band creates continuity, while plug-in program modules provide specific infrastructure and structural support. Architects are no longer engaged in the creation of the urban experience. We must seek out new mental territory and new ways of participating in the arena of the space between. /We need to reconsider our role in the world and be willing to question the meaning of architectural development. /////Comprised of two flexible tracks and an accordion of rigid partitions that slides along them, the proposal is both highly adaptable and embedded with constraints. By sliding the partitions along the rail a tall, narrow space can be transformed into a short, wide one, affecting the adjacent cells in turn. A variety of interchangeable panels can be substituted to create an assembly of difference that allows users to customize and control the flexible cellular matrix.

Gleaming towers and postcard-worthy skylines characterize the traditional perception of the modern city. Increasingly, however, these iconic buildings are no longer housing the most vital urban activities. As advances in personal and mobile technology enable faster and more flexible patterns of living and consumption, the fixed roots and long and expensive timelines of permanent edifices can no longer keep pace with their inhabitants. The result is wasted material and financial investment, missed economic opportunities and a migration from interior spaces to the interstitial spaces of the city. As seen in the work of Archigram and the Situationists International, for example, the shortcomings of permanence in an era of rapid change were apparent even before the advent of global networks or mobile technology. -City as responsive, modular system -City as backdrop for events -Temporary interventions as a catalyst for future growth Contemporary solutions such as San Franciscos ubiquitous food carts, food trucks, parklets and restaurant pop-ups are successful in their ability to generate temporary social spaces, but insufficient in their ability to operate at multiple scales. They are also non-architectural, meaning that architects are no longer involved in the production of some of the most dynamic urban experiences. //This thesis hypothesizes that by looking to a more impermanent form of architecture, the problems of inflexibility and stagnation inherent in fixed structures can be bypassed and new opportunities for revitalization and growth can be seized that were previously unattainable. //Moreover, mobile and temporary architecture does not have to exist in competition with the existing fabric, but can augment it and work symbiotically to make the city more efficient and productive at multiple Up next:

Tomorrow on my way to school Ill take photos of my scattered sites for reference, finish up the pod designs for the catalog (which doesnt mean they cant be modified/added to later), then work on the vignettes. At some point Ill take another pass at the abstract and take a first shot at the 100 words. MISA GRANNIS | THESIS SP12
