The Milgauss, introduced in 1956, was designed to meet the demands of the scientific community and is capable of withstanding magnetic fields of up to 1,0 0 0 gauss. After rigorous testing by CERN engineers, it earned a reputation as the perfect magnetic shield. Todays Milgauss features a Parachrom hairspring that provides additional protection from the effects of magnetism. The Milgauss is presented here in 904L steel with a green sapphire crystal.

CERN (European Council for Nuclear Research), the worlds pre-eminent particle physics laboratory, hosts the worlds highest-energy particle accelerator. CERN was also one of the first scientific institutions to confirm that the Milgauss watch could indeed resist magnetic fields of up to 1,000 Gauss.
The major innovation at the heart of the Milgauss incredible resistance to magnetic interferences is the shield protecting the movement. Made of ferromagnetic alloys selected by Rolex, it consists of two components, one screwed to the movement and the other to the Oyster case. Only Rolex-certified watchmakers will ever see it, but the symbol for magnetic flux density - the capital letter B with an arrow - is engraved in this magnetic shield.

The Milgauss works in magnetic fields up to 1,000 Gauss, hence its name. (In French mille means thousand, and Gauss is a magnetic field measurement). With its clean lines and orange seconds hand, shaped like a lightning bolt, the Milgauss is recognisable at a glance.
904l steel
Rolex uses 904L steel for its steel watch cases. 904L is usually reserved for the chemical industry, where maximum resistance against corrosion is essential. 904L marries perfectly with the other precious metals used by Rolex. A super alloy, 904L is extremely resistant and highly polishable.
A watch is only as precise as its oscillator is regular. Conventional oscillator hairsprings are made of ferromagnetic alloys, leaving them vulnerable to magnetic fields and shocks. After five years of research, Rolex created the blue Parachrom hairspring. Crafted from a paramagnetic alloy, it is unaffected by magnetic fields and up to 10 times more resistant to shocks. Historically, the unique blue colour of the hairspring has been a sign of prestige reserved for only the most accurate timepieces. Today, it guarantees the accuracy of your Rolex.
