Why We Need These Standards?


A set of international standards brings a world-wide focus to the environment, encouraging a cleaner, safer, healthier world for us all. The existence of the standards allows organizations to focus environmental efforts against internationally accepted criteria. A single standard will ensure that there are no conflicts between regional interpretations of good environmental practice. Types of standards: BS: British Standard ISO: International Standards Organization

ISO 9000: Proper Quality Management


OBJECTIVE: ISO 9000 guidelines provide a comprehensive model for quality management systems that can make any company competitive

ADVANTAGES It is widely acknowledged that proper quality management improves business, often having a positive effect on investment, market share, sales growth, sales margins, competitive advantage, and avoidance of litigation. ISO often gives the following advantages: 1. Creates a more efficient, effective operation 2. Increases customer satisfaction and retention 3. Reduces audits 4. Enhances marketing 5. Improves employee motivation, awareness, and morale 6. Promotes international trade 7. Increases profit 8. Reduces waste and increases productivity. 9. Common tool for standardization.

BS7750: Environmental Management System


OBJECTIVE: BS7750 is a specification for an environmental management system that provides a catalyst for continuous improvement. ADVANTAGES: The system describes the companys environmental management system, evaluates its performance and defines its policy, practices, objectives and targets; and provides a catalyst for continuous improvement. DIFFERENCE: The concept is similar to the use of ISO9000 for quality systems, with the methods to be used open to definition by the company. The standard provides the framework for development and assessment of the resultant environmental management system. BS7750 requires an Environmental Policy to be in existence within the organization, fully supported by senior management, and outlining the policies of the company, not only to the staff but to the public. The policy needs to clarify compliance with Environmental Legislation that may affect the organization and stress a commitment to continuous improvement.

ISO 14000: Generic Management System


OBJECTIVE: ISO 14000 standards is a management tool enabling an organization of any size or type to control the impact of its activities, products or services on the environment. It defines a structured approach for: Setting environmental objectives and targets, Achieving these goals, and Demonstrating that they have been achieved.

ADVANTAGES: The ISO 14000 approach forces managers to take a critical look at all areas where their Businesses have an environmental impact. This systematic approach can lead to benefits like the following: Reduced cost of waste management, Savings in consumption of energy and materials, Lower distribution costs, Improved corporate image among regulators, customers and the public, and a Framework for continuous improvement of environmental performance. DIFFERENCE: ISO 14000 is quite different from most other ISO standards. It is known as a generic management system standard. Generic means that the same standard can be applied to any organization, large or small, whatever its product or service, in any sector of activity, and whether it is a business enterprise, public administration or government department.ISO 14000 is concerned with the way an organization goes about its work, and not directly with the results of this work. The focus is on processes, not products.

BS 5781: Measurement & Calibration Systems


OBJECTIVE: Measurement, Calibration, Measuring instruments, Selection, Maintenance, Systems analysis, Quality assurance systems, Quality control, Inspection equipment DIFFERENCE: BS 5781 is the only standard among the others mentioned here that have a minimum requirements for a system for selecting, using, calibrating, controlling and maintaining measurement standards and measuring equipment used in the fulfillment of specified requirements.

BS 5750: Quality Management System


OBJECTIVE: BS 5750 certifies that a company's quality management system works efficiently. ADVANTAGES: The system being defined as 'the organization structure, responsibilities, activities, resources and events that together provide organized procedures and methods to ensure the capability of the organization to meet quality requirements'. The advantages the standard offer is: A reduction of waste and time-consuming reworking of designs and procedures More soundly based and efficient procedures More satisfied customers - because you have built in quality at every stage A kite mark qualification - without which you could not become an approved supplier DIFFERENCE: BS 5750 is the standard that requires the company to listen to what its customers want, to ensure it has mechanisms for assessing product quality and to apply whatever lessons are learned in the process Essentially it's 'say what you do, do what you say, and then prove that you've done it'
